I would like pa when testing to give a report on how many files are ok and how many are not. At present it just sayes all files are ok but it does not tell you how many files it has tested how many are ok and how many have been skipped and how many are not. i.e corrupt.

pa relies on the unrar.dll to extract rar files and if that is not kept upto date with the rar specification then it is not there fault for the error. can u tell us what operating sysem memory you have, programs open and the exact process of how you recreated the error.

Can you also tell us the size and file names of the files inside the rar and if any different characters are used.

Could you post the rar file here which version of rar actually made the rar file, this has been know to be the problem in some cases.

Icon files (*.ico) only show a default icon in the report view left to the filename.

It would be better for *.ico files to have shown the icon that is in the *.ico file like Windows Explorer and other software does.

Yes, the options are grouped by “working with filetypes” and not by option function.

So “Test” and “Compress to” are together for working with archive files (as is FTP and Email).
Note also that the encrypt / Compress and encrypt options are together.
The only exception is the “convert” option - not sure why :p

View - Small icons changes the icons in the file area, but that’s not what I asked for.

I use the powerarc256 skin, but toolbar (new, open,favourites,…, encrypt,checkout) is always same size 32 pixel, thats the height of the skin bimap. And I found no bitmap which is smaller the 32 pixel.

I tried to create a half height skin, but PA complains invalid image size.

My idea was for PA, especially as explorer context menu entry.
But for PACL it would be nice, too.

Just thought I’d bump this little topic with a screenshot of a toolbar I’m currently using thanx to some fun icons I obtained.

hopefully the later releases of PA will let us perhaps improve on this even more.

Well. remember not every .exe is an SFX file.
I can see where you might want to “check” an exe file without running it - so a simple answer - when drag & dropping always give the option “open” - does not matter what the file extension/type is.

This way the open/uncompress is under user control and PA does have to do any examination to determine the real file type.

E.g I drag & drop “example.tbg” - PA ALWAYS offers two options:-
Add to archive (compress)
Open (assuming it is an archive - or a renamed exe)

If user selects Add - then open “options dialog” assuming action “compress”.
if user selects “open” then do compatability checking (type of archive).

Initially, there is no checking of the filetype or contents of “example.tbg” required.

Is is possible to add a “Pause” button to temporariy stop the compression? For example, just like what I am doing now, I am archiving “My Documents” with over 5GB totally. It would be a long-lasting journey for PA to finish the whole archiving process. However, I may choose to do some small tasks when PA is compressing and I may prefer to pause its action for a while.

Currently PA seems not supporting this… Would it be available in the following versions? :D

if you have opened an archive the +/- buttons on the statusbar are available.

But if you are in Explorermode and browse through your directories, the +/- buttons are not available

The Explorer bar in PA should support Drag&Drop To Windows Explorer: Dragging a sub-folder from there to Windows Explorer should extract exactly this sub-folder. And dragging the archive root from there should extract the whole archive (without the need to have to select all the files in the list before dragging them to Windows Explorer).

On a similar vain, I wish the grey bar below the toolbar would shorten the path when using a system folder, so:

PA already has a bar which shows the current directory.
This bar could be used perfectly as Explorer navigation bar.

Additionally, the Explorer bar tree icons should show some informations about their content:

If the folder contains only files: TreeIconColor1
If the folder contains only subfolders: TreeIconColor2
If the folder contains files and subfolders: TreeIconColor3
If the folder contains nothing: TreeIconColor4

The PA Explorer bar actually does not show the tree of nested archives (e.g. zip inside zip). It should display instead:

+Parent Archive.zip
….Child Archive 1.zip
…Child Archive 2.zip

etc.

Sorry, but I just don’t see a “general benefit” for this thumbs view suggestion.

I would like to see the main PowerArchiver icon colors to get changed slightly. Problem is that in Windows XP explorer uses the same yellow color as PowerArchiver. I can hardly see the difference between the taskbar buttons for a PowerArchiver window and a Windows Explorer window. Here’s a screenshot:

Problem is worse on TFT display. The vertical viewing range is limited so details fade out a bit. I think more users have problems with it.

Recently I tried the explorer view again (you see dir-tree on the left). However it’s pretty useless because you can’t select directories or even right-click on them. I would like to see options to select multiple subdir’s, view the properties, select them for extraction, test or virusscan the files within those subdir’s, etc…

Hi, I would like to see the Find Archive section to get updated to search for files within archives on your computer or given directory. The Find Archive method as implemented now in PowerArchiver is now just as useful as the Windows Search.

Remember WinRar has this already.

I know about that programs, I think that remembering the last search is still a convenient feature though; I don’t see disadvantages apart from privacy, which you can easily solve making a blank search or simply with “Clear History”.

One of the features I use a lot in PA is the renaming of individual files inside the package. Unfortunately this action does not have a key command set for it, which I would like to request for the next version.

Note: I do /not/ mean the rename archive (F2) function, but the rename function for individual files which is hidden in the actions menu or file context menu.

I’m well aware of what RPMs are for, but they are basically specialized archives which also contain file based instructions for the RPM software to use when installing the program. They can also be accessed just as a regular archive.

Several Windows-based archivers already support viewing/extracting RPMS including:

Edit: Just proving my point; several other archivers do support this (including freeware), it’s not some mystical technology.

When I click on the “Extract” button in PowerArchiver, there is an option for “Open folder after extracting”, which I always keep checked.
It would be nice to have another one saying “Close PowerArchiver after extracting”. With both checked, the PowerArchiver window would be “replaced” with the Explorer window. I think it’d be great! ;)

I wish checkout didn’t add ‘.filetype’ in the name.

I was thinking about upgrading to newest PA version so I installed it for testing. One thing: new icons. They’re too bright (or maybe the saturation level is too big). Look at the attached image and compare newest icons to other, typical icons. Note that the color scheme is totally diferent, they just don’t go to well with each others. Look how the older PA icons (bottom of the image) look good with the others, even the oldest are much better. The contrast with the background is much too low, and on default system color scheme it’s even worse (white background, and very bright yellow icons). Note that none of default Windows icons don’t have such high saturation, they’re all based on the same level. Look at the second screenshot, new icon just doesn’t fit there well. And on the third screenshot you can see that many bright icons near each other can give you a real eyes pain. So I ask you to make an option to choose from oldest, new and newest icon set when making file associations. It just a small tweak, beacuse the icons could be called e.g. 1xx (oldest), 2xx (new), 3xx (newset) in the resources and in that case it’s just a small fix in the registry and everything would work fine.

I would rather such a system came in the form of a plugin. I have no need to change the icons or use skins and would rather it wasn’t a compulsory part of the program.

Actually, when you use the Open Dialogue within the repair tool, it seems as if will only allow selection of ZIP files - however you can type in the sfx filename e.g. ARCHIVE.EXE
The repair tool will work and produce a " _PAfixed.zip" file.

Right now if you leave associate with… check, it associates with PA’s default associations, without taking care of what your current settings is. Solution is to uncheck it :-).

Default associations in PA do not include JAR. Just do a clean installation and verify Options -> Configuration -> File formats.

Is it possible to add in future versions an options to just use one icon for all archives? Without the file format text on it?

I don’t need to see the extension on the icon (I’m sure I can’t be the only one), if I do I can just get windows to always display file type extensions or sort the explorer view by file type.

You could have an option for to enable switching between one icon or many (one for each file type, as now) either in settings or maybe in some sort of first run wizard.

Current version of unrar.dll supports reading comments !

How about a seperate sfx program like davidsplash asked for, but using the same license key. so when u register for powerarchiver u get the sfx program free. aka use the same username and code.

Problem is that if we have to maintain completly separate package, it will have to cost something…

Otherwise, PA SFX is pretty decent with its features, probably more than what normal users need…

the new uha vrsion 0.6 is out and now has a sfx module 56K upx compressed. Just been using the program Winuha and comparing results with 7-zip for fun.

results are pretty good extra 3-6% compression ratio to 7-zip. using similar memory.

most people on here just state a problem /bug not how to produce it or where it was made and what version of pa there using or external package. i would like this to be madatory. also some guide libes on posting bugs and what to do about them.

Hi, today I was modifying some nVidia driver files, but they seem to have SZDD compression. PowerArchiver is not able to open this files or even extract them.
I have no further information about this compression mechanism, however I do know I can extract those archives using Microsofts Expand tool.

I would like support for this compressiontype. Also other driver packages have sometimes SZDD compression.

you want an archiver like pa was in version 1 but with all the format support it has now if you think like that. Pa would never evolve. pa needs to keep pace of change to improve and my suggestions help that by allowing archive only ideas to ghopefully get implimented.

It can be turned off under “Tools/Options/PowerArchiver” by setting format to “Don’t Compress” - but this is a global setting.

But a button (or drop-down) selection within the email compose window would make it much simpler for one-off changes. Maybe include the whole “Compress format” choice within the Message Options dialog?

Sometimes I dont want so send the mail in zip, but in 7z. So is it possible to add an option to the email itself so I can overwrite the settings by hand only for that email?

I’ve been looking for ages for a unrar-utility that will continue extracting the archive even if a part is missing at that time. The reason for this is that I regularly download movies from usenet, which are always in spanned rar-archives.

The idea is that I begin downloading a movie, once the first rar is dl’d, I immediately begin extracting it, so that an incomplete .avi appears, which can then be played without problems with VLC media player. Now it would be perfect if PowerArchiver would detect when a new part of the archive is available, and immediately continue extracting it in the background.

It seems to me a relatively simple feature to implement, and I would be really grateful if it could be done.

if pa allows the use of the command line version of rar in pa such as tugzip does then would that sattisfy you as i know it would the rar authors as you have to register the comman line version in order to use it

Well, 9.01 is an old version - current release is 9.11 and there is a 9.20 beta.

Did you re-boot the PC after installing PA and before trying these options? The shell dll needs a Windows reboot to be updated.

Are you sure that you do not have a Windows Explorer screen open when making the selections?

Note: I have also used PA on Win98, Win2k and WinXP but I never had this problem after rebooting - unless an explorer window was open at the time I made the configuration choices.

I want this feature too. PA hogs the CPU when compressing/converting archives.

From what I understand, the only way to add comments to archive types that support it (Zip at least) is to go into the main program and open actions>comment. It doesn’t seem accessible from either the shell (Compress to ZIP + Options) or from the Compression Profiles. I usually add a tagline to my archives, and usually work from the shell extensions since it’s must faster when archiving then using the whole GUI each time. I’d love to see a way to add a default comment via a Profile, and also a way to enter comments into the Add dialogue when doing ZIP+Options from the shell.

I use PA as my main backup software using its PBS scripting feature. However, the UI prevents me from doing a standard “full” backup. Namely, I want to be able to archive all files in a folder, REGARDLESS of their archive attribute, then clear their archive attributes when I’m done, to indicate that they have been backed up. However, in the PBS wizard UI, as soon as I turn off the “Add only if archive attribute is set” setting (to ignore the archive attribute and backup everything), the “Clear archive attribute” check box becomes disabled. I have never understood this behavior because it prevents PA from performing a classic “full” backup. Please keep the “Clear archive attribute” available when the “Add only if archive attribute is set” option is turned off. Thank you.

I often delete files from zip-archives.
After the deletion some folders, that previous have files, are empty.
When i now extract the archive PA creates empty folders.
I think there should be an Global Option to turn this behavior off.

So you can save a file directly to a zip or cab or 7zip file. great if you just want to create one file.

you can leave it on yourself at all times and it will work the same… It is already enabled in compress to filename.zip in shell extensions.
