I’ve not noticed winrar has that yet, but winace and winuha have that. Anyhow, having the completion % in the begiinning is really a great idea :cool: , followed by the file name…
If the bar space is too limited, one can put some of these (like the application name) (probably also) into the tool tip as in winace and winuha. ;)

By the way,
The full path is shown on the right click menu when trying to decompressing a file. How to change it to a relative folder address rather than the whole root address? :confused:

Is it good to make an option to shorten the relative folder name with “…” to avoid long name from a folder or file that may be prone to crashing the window?

If the directionary and the system resources for compression can be variably manipulated, users can choose the one tha fits them best. Of course, there’s a default for users with no preference. ;)

My understanding is that an archive compressed with UHA 0.4(beta) cannot be decompressed with UHA(0.6). This is what I meant by backward compatility.

So if PA were to incorporate UHA 0.6 (beta) they would have “bug reports” relating to UHA 0.4(beta). This is not acceptable for a commercial program.

wish plugins only for decompression wouldn’t be a big problem.

But it would be a problem as I mentioned before (0.4 <=>0.6).
PowerArchiver is a commercial product they cannot say “use at your own risk”.

I believe “normal” path option was not enabled for D&D into archive, hence it does not work.

I would like to see both 7z and UHA with BOTH compression options AND make SelfExtreactiong for 7z and UHA easily

And not just the usual dump all files into the current directory option, but the full frill option set available to WinRAR users

I’m not sure truncating (especially the end of the name ) is a good idea.

For extracting - if the file is already selected/highlighted in the explorer window do we actually need the name in PA context menu at all?

However, the same “problem” exists when long filenames / foldernames are to be compressed (and is worse if compress & encrypt is activated).

Now truncating the name would have to ensure we do not lose the file suffix which is the only indication of compression method (zip, cab etc.)

Perhaps use placeholder type text
“extract to [filename as subfolder]”
“compress to [filename].zip”

If is to be a length setting, then make it a configuration option so user specifies the maximum size before changing ??

there’s a proggie, NewFolderHere, which will allow you to do that…as long as you click to a file in PA explorer view (not on the blank space).
the proggie adds a voice to win context menu: “new folder here”…and of course creates the folder, where you like! ;)

There are lots of programs that will do that for you.

I’m sorry if I seem to be intruding on this forum, but I did whip up a program like what you are asking for in VB.NET. It basically calculates Checksums using CRC32, MD5, and SHA1.

You would then call it like the following…
crcmd5sha1 CRC/MD5/SHA1,FileName
attachment_p_2051_0_crcmd5sha1.zip

I am not sure if it is possibe to properly repair CAB files, while there might be utilities for it, CAB archive format is solid, which means single file data is not saved inside of archive. Simply there is no CRC data for single files so you cant extract ones that were not damaged…

SFX Maker is out of date, I agree. However, I have been working with David Cornish on version 2.6, which will support CAB compression (as well as ZIP). 7zip and RAR may come later.

Well, normally using associated applications would lauch an application which can do other things besides just show the contents. Remember the problems caused by the simple change to file extensions caused by the ILOVEYOU “virus” (.txt.vbs).

If everyone used a simple file viewer for email attachments as well as archive contents, it would have made this a non-event.

By default graphic files (gif jpeg) are associated with InterNet Explorer. This opens you to various virus/trojan attacks. And the various “helper objects” such as .scr/.vbs files are even more likely to be dangerous.

Using a simple viewer which cannot/does not perform any running/launching of the file is usually much quicker, safer and less wasteful of system resources.

Why PA hasn’t ?..

Both WinRar and PowerArchiver have several hundred features that other one does not. We try to simplify our dialogues so we dont add extra features that we think that people might not use.

I am not even sure if we can change the name of next multivolume via unrar.dll.

Please do not post xxxx has, PA doesnt kind of threads, if you wish some feature added, let us know. Otherwise it makes us defensive about what we do or dont do, which is pretty silly.

And due to this being PowerArchiver’s forums we appreciate not mentioning of other utilities, in good or bad sense. Most of other commercial software programs do not have public forums and we would appreciate not giving good or bad advertising to anyone on our own forums…

it would be great if you create a new archive and then while it is adding file decide to cancel the archive that it asks you if you want to save the archive from that point in time instead of it just deleting the achive or not creating it.

This feature would be excellent as some times drive get too big and especally usefully whaen your using a laptop and you know your just about to lose power in a minute and its a large archive you want to save before the power goes.

It is randomly generated SHA-1 key, so there is not much to worry about on that end. It is not your password. It was meant to be there, and can be seen via txt editor.

As to extensions, you cant change it and I dont really know how well would that work - I mean then your end user wouldnt be able to open it via PA right?

In the future, we might make it so filename of encrypted file is not seen for privacy reasons - we had made pae to work similar to compression encryption formats in which it was usual to see name of the file that is encrypted…

I can wait. It’s what I’ve been doing 4 several years. But the creators of PA are always saying that they’re translating 2 spanish, and it’s not true. Of couse I’m using another program. I’m tired of waiting, and I already think that PA is not as good as they say.

Thanx zjys :D 4 recommending me WinR**, I’ve discovered a really good program. And with a spanish interface. It deserves 2 B called “the best”.

Is it possible to just have one archive icon, not one for each type so remove the extension text from the icon image. It doesn’t matter what type they are, PA can open them, if I really want to see the different types I can just get windows explorer to sort them into groups. Also I don’t have lots of archives in one folder so I don’t have the need to see different types in the icons. Maybe you could have a simple PA version with one icon and and advanced one with lots of icons. Maybe too with options like the Advanced add window enabled and so on. There are so many options and many of them I don’t need to see, I can’t be the only one!

I don’t mean 2 versions of PA, I mean one version with an option of beginner or advanced features.

Can you add support for the Squeez compression format (extension .sqx) to PowerArchiver.

It has compression comparable to (and better than) the 7-zip format, and also has special modes for compressing multimedia files (ie. audio WAV).

The par file format is now in par 2.0 and is very good for helping download files and corruption of archives and file over downloads. it would be greast to add this feature as it would give pa some sort of feature that winrar has to fix archives. Well worth it

at the moment i use quickpar for this but it would be better if this is in paowerarchiver.

what does everyone else think

It would be nice if there is a set of standard files you use to test powerarchiver on differmnt things, in the download so we can test powerarchives performace agaist its competitors and new features added.

Like the canturbury files.

There are some command line options described in the help, but we recommend using PACL if you need those things, becasue PACL is more than just simple commnad line utility. There is a big set of features you can use while compressing/decompressing.

We do not want to have “full” command line support in PowerArchiver, as this would make application even bigger.

If someone uses this (that are not all users), then please use PACL.

it would be nice to be able to create our own plugins and to have the ones already avaliable for download on this site

Isnt this a little overreacted ? I mean Im from Germany and you may have other laws. But alteration of a user`s registry is nothing winzip can possibly complain about.

And if they do sometime in the future, you can remove this topic then.

It is not that much requested feature anyway, so the 3 or 4 users won`t do much harm.

Just to add my 2¢ here, I think it would be the best of both worlds if the windows defaulted to being centered upon opening based on your screen size and to have an option to remember size and position as a simple checkbox in the setup. This way everyone’s person preference is served.

Batch ZIP & Multi Volume creation window should support a password protection option, where the user can enter a password for these files

There is always a but i know it should be a download manager but it would be great to have this feature in powerarchive. even if it was limited to zip and cab at present.

It would make it easier for using archives on the internet. It would give you more control. I think this feature would be great as it can help with archives as it would save time over the internet. I use powerarchiver for most archives and this feature would save time and effort otherwise i have to have a download manager with archive support which would defeat the point of having powerarchiver.

Personally I Think this function should be better in the Windows Gloabal search than in PA

Java Developers: can search JAR (Java Archive) files so you can easily locate your .class files.

it would be nice if powerarchiver can search the version resources of files. If you need to find the right version of a DLL or driver file, and can search for it. Remember, ZipScan looks through archive files so it will find your file even if it lives inside a CAB (Microsoft Cabinet) file or a Zip file.

The ONLY program I know that can open these type of files is ZipScan (as mentioned in another forum).

With this program, I could open the Delphi 2 installer files and ATI driver installer files!

Try it and see for yourself!

i have to use quickpar to get the par feature. it would give you the same power of recovery thats in rar files when will this be implemented well worth it version 2 of par is excellent and saves downloading the whole say zip archive or any archive again.

this has been discussed many times. you have to ask the WinRAR author to make the RAR compression library free for everyone. otherwise PA would be much more expensive because PA authors have to pay for the exclusive use of RAR library.
so don’t expect RAR compression in future versions of PA.

7ZIP is a very good alternative in my sight.

maybe in far future… In essence it would be an new piece of software completly…

A nice “feature” would be a custimizeable exe file with the following components. Here you should decide if it is a feature or a different program.

I have a German version. But it should also be possible to create an exe-file with a different language e.g. English, French or Italian. I’m living in Germay and here the do so, if they deliver in a different country. It would be a nice Idea to insert the url of my homepage into the exe file, bevor I send them to the customer. This should also be valid for the legal file. And the legal file (=my legal file) should be delivered into the zip file too. This can all be managed from a different program, which takes a PA-Zip-File for input and a parameter file as a rezept (A file which ca be edited by the program too). It is a good idea to place an own logo on the dialog box of the exe file and to customize it’s own skin.

Just a suggestion though, maybe convert that word “Move” to “Delete”. When you move files, people think “well, I’ll have to move them to another directory and I’ll tell it where to move the files to.”. When you delete files, people think “these files will then go to the recycle bin”. Just a suggestion though.

Move is the correct terminology.

Compare moving file(s) from “C:” in Windows Explorer

a) Select the file(s)
b) Select the destination
c) Select “Move”

The file(s) are copied to destination and then deleted {from "C:}

In Archiving file(s) from “C:” in Windows Explorer

a) Select the file(s)
b) Select “Options”
c) Select the destination (Archive Filename)
d) Select “Move”

The file(s) are copied to Archive and then deleted {from "C:}

these option are there but if you have installed a version of powerarchiver with these options then deselecting them on installing a new version does not work

I hadn’t actually tried WinRAR before (I just thought PA was slow) so I downloaded WinRAR 3.4 beta to try it. I have to say I was very impressed with the speed of it. It loaded the XP SP2 SFX far quicker than PA could manage. WinRAR took approx. 3 seconds to load XP SP2, PA took 4 minutes 11 seconds. A big difference I’m sure you’ll agree.

It looks like PA is going through the whole file instead of just reading the file structure because the Hard disk is chugging away for a long time.

I’ve only checked ZIP archives and SFX cab files and while WinRAR is faster than PA at opening all archives, this problem is specific to SFX cab files.

Any other optimizations that can be made to the opening of all types of archives wouldn’t hurt though. In this case, faster is always better:o)!

Glad to see you’ve got some other ideas for speeding it up. I look forward to testing them.

I’d still like to see an option for caching the files as well. If people don’t require this option or are short of memory, they can disable it, but for people who want a faster Explorer view(at the expense of memory used) can enable it if they wish. Best of both worlds!

So basically, current progress bar to advance when PA is starting to open current file… We will check it out for future versions.

Can you add option so that archives are displayed in the Folder Tree along with folders.

WinRAR has a option to disable the asterisk on password entry, so you can directly see the password. Such an option would be also very cool for PA.

It is also handy for people who wan’ts to know your password :eek: :confused:

It would be nice if when you get the choice of file formats to asscoiate with powerarchiver that it can list what program is using what file format. So if I have rar associate with say winrar it sayes so. this would help solve some problems assocaites with some file formats not working in powerarchiver or not working as they used to, by telling me why

if you DnD a file from one PA window to another Pa window, the DnD Add window is displayed, but when you click “OK” the progress dialog is displayed, but actually nothing happens (ie. the file i9s not added) NOTE: You shpouold also test a DnD move operation (ie. DnD with SHIFT held down)

Don’t forget too give as much detail (maybe example archives/screenshots) as possible including exact version of PA and O.S.

The CAB files created by InstallShield are not ordinary CAB files - they can’t be opened by PA or WinZip! The only program I know that can open these files is called ZipScan.

I know that this format has been around for a long time (The Delphi 2 installer used this).

Also, please try and enable UHA support - it really is that good!

Huge feature missing: pressing a letter on the keyboard doesn’t take you to the folder that begins with that letter. That’s very uncomfortable and annoying. Please…fix it.

It would be nice to have a plugin for outlook so i can work with comprerssion file formats i.e 7 zip or zip or cab while I was in outlook just like winzip does with its zip plugin for outlook

you could install just the features you want and not the ones you don’t use.

Just look at winamp for example or irfanview which uses this philosophy plugins.

They are quicker to download and musch faster to adapt to changes in image/music formats.

It would help reduce the size due top the fact yuou only download and install the features you really need.

This would be a nice idea for pa as it would help make it easier for theym to maintain as if one part does not work they can disable it redoit or update it much quicker than it is now and you won’t have to download the whole of pa just for an update due to say 7zip

e.g. adding “default extract location” to it

so the user can directly choose in the Extraction dialog, where he want’s to extract his files

extract to current folder extract to /archive folder extract to last extracting folder or user definded folder.

normally this options are available in the optionsmenu. But it would be cool, if these options would be directly available in the extraction window.

JAR (new ARJ) is not so widespread and that is the reason why it’s not supported. There are many formats that even show better results than 7-ZIP and CAB - like SQX - but are not so used so no need for extending our application, making it slower, bigger just to support one more format that use less then 1% of users.

7-ZIP is supported becasue it’s open-source and it is the only format that is constantly growing.

JAR is vey old format - I rembebr it since 1996, but still didn’t grow.

And, as I know, JAR compression is protected - like RAR, ARJ and ACE - we could probably make only support for decompression, but never compression itself.

aha! Can you update it, too? It would be great cause its a good format!
