problem is that with zip format for instance, you can have both encrypted and unencrypted files in the archive, at the same time… so right now we do not do any type of detection.

Hi there This is a feature I use as default in Winrar when creating rar archives, and it would be really nice to see it implemented as a part of PA. It would save the trouble of uploading or burning a file without having to open it first. Thank you :D Mame

  • Feature / Bug: MSI Plugin Displaying Internal CABs

The MSI Plug-in currently displays the File table entries AND the .CAB files. In every other archive type, the presence of .CAB files indicates a “Compressed archive”. Those unfamiliar with MSI will not realize that everything in those CAB files is already being displayed as files at the same “level” as the cab files. Technically by seeing the file list from the File table, you are seeing the directory of everything contained in those cabs. They just “happen” to be stored in the MSI as well. Double-clicking a cab file results in a slow and unnecessary extraction of the CAB and then viewing it as it’s own archive. Not only that, but as you hunt for the CAB with the right file, you have to keep doing it for each cab (The .MSI for the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) contains 5 cabs that make up it’s file set - where clicking the file in the file list will find it in the cab for you. I propose that the CABs that are referenced by the MSI media table should not be displayed in the file list. Rather they should be viewed like the “parts of a multipart archive” that should never be in the file view. The fact that the CABs are compressed into the MSI (they are not actually IN the File table, but MSI streams) is a side issue to viewing the “whole MSI as an achive” I hope I am making sense - just didn’t want all the cool work of creating the file list to be lost on people directly rummaging the CABs due to that being the standard operation with all other archive types. Thanks, D.
  • Feature / Bug: MSI Plugin Uses Wrong File Name

Hello, I was reviewing the MSI plug-in and see that it is using the MSI File table column called “File” to list the filenames and for creating the file upon extraction. This column contains an abstracted file name, not the final file name that the MSI would create if installed. This is done so that the same MSI can contain multiple files with the same name - like when the same file “something.exe” needs a 32 bit and 64 bit version in the same package, but has the same name when installed on the target system. The “File” column is the key to the table and must be unique. The “FileName” column contains the name of the file as it would appear if installed by the package. This is a fairly frequent occurrence on Microsoft SDK MSIs which are exactly the kind I’d rather do an extract on than do a complete install. Would it be possible to change the plug-in to use the FileName column when displaying and extracting files? Thanks, D.

@gan: Don’t get me wrong i think PA is great with many features. I just think it could be enhanced a bit to make it easier to use with fewer steps and better options to customize the profiles. apsolutely, forums are here for your input, and we love it ;)

@AluminumHaste: is PAE a powerarchiver proprietary format? currently yeah…well all of the formats inside are public, it is just container. keep in mind that i do not know of anything that decrypts in multicore actually, not in true sense of word. For instance no compression tools support multicore extraction either, just compression.

@twistedemotions: I would like to see the ability to customize the ribbon as in Office 2010 (currently in beta). At this time I see no way to customize the buttons for that mode. A much more minor request… Also I would like to disable or hide the Quick Access Toolbar all together, rather than just remove the items from it and have it sitting there as a tiny down arrow. Right now you have functions under the pseudo office button, the some of the same functions available under the Quick Access Toolbar down arrow, and everything things available yet again on the ribbon interface. indeed, we do have some functions replicated by default, but thats because users use PA in different way. If you open archive, open button will not show up on main toolbar anymore for instance, so you could use either QAT or orb/file menu to open another file for instance. QAT is also there for default so people can easily see it exists and can customize it to their prefferences. As to Office 2010, we will have some upgrades to our ribbon component once Office 2010 is out as official version.
