Executing “dir” can activate virus that is already in memory (memory resistant virus). But nor “dir” or “extract” can activate virus - on a clean computer virus can be activated only by executing - not any other action. So don’t worry about it.

Hi, you are correct - limit is 262,144 files per archive, everyone writes “Unlimited” or virtually unlimited because it is considered to be hard to reach. Same goes to archive file size, which is not unlimited either but it is more than a terabyte. PowerArchiver fully supports PkWare’s 4.5 standard, so it supports whatever that standard supports. I have to say that I wasnt even aware of actual number itself, and PkWare usually writes “virtually unlimited” in the press releases, same as WinZip. PkWare original press release stated: ZIP Format Enhancements Virtually Eliminate Limitations on Archive Size and Number of Files (in an Archive) We probably should change it on our feature page to show the actual number of files supported. Thanks for pointing it out. regards,

Hi, You could rename the files inside of zip file that cause Windows file system issues. We could create some check if filenames have any “special” characters that are not allowed but I could see some serious performance issues there in case when archive has thousands of files. As long as you are not doing this on daily basis, it would be far easier to simply rename the files in question :-). thanks,

Hi, Your PAE file has been corrupted most likely. Usually this happens during download or email, but it could happen due to the bad media as well. Unfortunatly since it is an encrypted file, it is impossible to repair the archive. regards,

@deipotent: Now I get it. Has someone checked that PA automatically creates a 4.5 format archive with an archive that ends up larger than 4GB but has less than 65535 files ? Yep, it has been working fine for 2.5 years now. As mentioned above, I think it is done on the fly so once treshold is reached, 4.5 format is used. thanks,

Following on from deipotents post http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=405 I looked at the home page http://www.powerarchiver.com The second paragraph states PowerArchiver is a truly global archive utility, fully localized in over 10 languages, including French, German, Italian, Czech, Finnish and many others. and links to http://www.powerarchiver.com/translations where it states PowerArchiver is a truly global archive utility, fully localized in 12 different languages. and links to http://www.powerarchiver.com/download Where versions of PA 2004 are available in English, French, German, Polish, Slovak and Italian. I realise there is/will be delays for translations, but couldn’t the pages at least be consistent? Reading the main page gives the impression that PA 2004 is available in “over 10 languages” and the language page gives the impression that PA 2004 is available in 12 languages. This is misleading as PA 2004 is only available in 6 languages. PowerArchiver has been translated into French, German, Italian, Polish, Slovak, Czech, and Finnish. Older versions of PowerArchiver are available in Greek, Croatian, Portuguese, and Malaysian. The previous version (PA 2003) is only available in Finnish and Czech. The older version (PA 2001) is only available in Greek, Croatian, Portuguese and Malaysian. I realise there is a distinction between the general term “PowerArchiver” and “PowerArchiver 2004”, but how many casual browsers would, especially as both pages use the general term? At least, Finnish and Czech should be incorporated into the “older versions list”. Similarly, the comparison chart “Championship Manager Test” refers to “PowerArchiver 9.0” - again given the distiction between names above, is this supposed to be a different version to PowerArchiver, PowerArchiver 2001, PowerArchiver 2003 and PowerArchiver 2004 ?

actually, BH format has possibility of encryption, but it is not enabled in PA. So actual problem is that encryption is not enabled. We will check it out for 9.2 thanks,

Indeed it would. We would have to somehow reliably rename the file which would then cause other issues (which is why originally support for converting to same format was removed). I think the best option would be to make it an right-click option and do to some tricky re-compressing for selected files. I will move this thread to already requested wish at wishlist forums tomorrow so we have clear sight of it for 9.5… thanks,

@By-Tor: Isn’t that just under properties? Although, I do agree there should be more information listed. But, that’s on the wishlist. Yes, it is unrelated post, however FYI that feature was removed because it did not support a lot of newer archives not did that component have support for Delphi 5 when we moved to it long, long, long time ago :-). Problem has been solved, I am closing the thread. thank you,

@idburns: Ahh, apparently QuickView (which is part of our image here) does it. For anyone looking for the Add-In manager it’s located in: Tools -> Options “Other” tab “Advanced Options” “Add-In Manager” I am glad you figured it out, once in a while, finger gets pointed at us for compression Outlook plugins while we have none. I wonder what will happen when we actually release ours :-). thank you and closing this thread.

Just to mention it - AES was not compromised, article talks about how attacker can find connection and might be able to compromise data based on someone sending the file via email, someone else recovering it and knowing something about data from zip header info, which is unencryped. It is all by very, very, very long shot and more deals in absolute security. It very much deals with how compression utilities have always worked. In that sense, PAE is more secure since nobody knows anything about data encrypted. Nevertheless, compared to standard zip 2.04g encryption, all these techniques seem as space age technology. If you are really concerned about security, this would be my priority: 1. chosing coorect, randomized, long password (minimum of 10 characters) 2. securing your own computer against both external and on the site attacks by encrypting important data at all times. In any case, thanks for liking PA! :-) All everyone should keep in mind that not all data needs to be encrypted, we get few emails per week from people that forgot their PAE passwords for important working material that probably should not have been encrypted at all, such us mid-term papers, etc, etc. :-).

@Mlot: Hello there. i come across your Proggie only 2 days ago and i realy like it. I got only one Problem with it so far witch is very important to me (and maybe others), when i create a new Backup Script, i have noticed that the Password witch is used for this script is taken to the registry in Clear Letters. This is for me a very Bad thing to do so, is there a way to make a script ( for encrypted Arcives) with out storing the Passwort in Registry Hi, Indeed, it is not good if the computer is compromised, however keep in mind that info is stored in the PBS file, not the registry. There was no way to encrypt this data properly without braking support for previous versions of PowerArchiver which would choke on encrypted 160 bit hash :-). Keep in mind also that PABE is made for casual, repeated backups, and in that sense if someone has access to your PBS script, they also have access to the data you are backing up. We will try to make it work in next versions, without braking support for PBS in previous versions of PowerArchiver. thanks,

Since I discovered and use powerarchiver I always saw a plug-ins subdirectory. I wanted to know what this directory is used for exactly and if there are currently plug-ins that can be used in conjunction with powerarchiver. If no, do you plan to develop such extensions in the future ? Greetings,
