I understand now - it will not work as registration is saved in Win7 registry and Vista64 is reading its own.

So if you want to save space, just install them both to the same folder and it will work fine.

What i dont understand is that it does not really need installation again - in Vista64 when nag screen pops up, you just had to enter registration code and it should have worked.

That’s what I thought. I’ll check again just to be sure.

Step 1: Boot to Win7.
Step 2: Open PA. It’s registered
Step 3: Boot to Vista
Step 4: Check to see if registered, if not then register it.
Step 5: Boot to Win7
Step 6: Open PA. Check for registration.

I installed that version and it extracts ok in PowerArchiver. Still can’t extract via the context menu but that might be an admin issue.

there was an bug with progress bar display in taskbar… we managed to locate it and it is actually fixed in .29 or .30 (whatever i have the latest)

Don’t know if this matters, but explorer says “copying files” rather than “moving files”, so maybe temp folder is filling up (that’s not really a concern for me, I assume that windows will know to empty it when required. Speed, however, is important).

One more thing. I’m not a programmer, but if PA can skip using a temp folder while not using d&d, why not always (is there an inherit difference?)?
Also, I haven’t yet updated my laptop to win7, but I was using both PA11.50 on my laptop and earlier versions on my win7RC desktop before, and in both cases I seem to remember being able to extract using d&d without using a temp folder. Might be mistaken, but I don’t think so. I even think that I checked this very issue for someone on the general forum once.
If those earlier versions could do it, what has changed?

it is moving the files, regardless of whatever the dialogue says (just clarifying so people dont think files are left). Windows actually is not that good with managing your temp folder.

Only way for us to have d&d working from archives is via temp folder (in Vista/Win7). It has been like that for quite a while, from early PA 2009 betas, maybe even sooner than that (forgot when was Vista supported added in PA).

Drag and drop is not the same action as extract files to folder, it calls specific drag and drop windows functions which can be very beneficial (for instance in this case with UAC) and maintains compatibility with other windows apps (so you can drag and drop not only to Explorer but any application that supports it).

When the search function is looked at could you also check the search word size limit - it seems to have been reset so that two / three letter words are no longer valid

I would say stable but you may want to wait for confirmation of that. 11.60 Final was nearly 2 weeks ago and it has been a couple of bug fix releases since then AFAIK.

A slightly similar issue is in the PowerArchiver installer which still says PowerArchiver 2007 in the version data, in multiple places, when you view the file properties of the installer. It’s a small detail, but it would be cool if that was updated. :)

Partially fixed by 11.60.25:

1. PowerArchiver still accesses the A: drive. This slows down population of the explorer view, as the A: drive is waited unnecessarily waited on.

2. The error message is now gone.

Why not just go directly to the last open archive folder? Why start from Desktop and drill down, drive by drive?

Luckily I have ocd when it comes to details :).

it is same as terry has written above - you need to activate shell extensions by pressing context key, then you will see underlined letters.

Okay, I see how this works now, I was right-clicking and then pressing the key.

Ok What I was trying to compress was My Copy of Windows XP Professional

I drug all the folders & files off the CD onto the desktop was going to compress in & keep it for back up purposes

but Power PA wouldn’t do it

so I started removing folders & files piece by piece to see what was cousing the burn wizard to come up & not the ISO Compression wizard

in that Windows XP Professional folder I was attempting to compress is a folder named I386

Once I removed that folder the iso window poped up like its supposed to

When I try to compress the 1386 folder it would bring up the Burn wizard for some odd reason

Dunno why

But it might make sense to others

Hello,

There appears to be a couple bugs when encrypting an attachment using the Outlook plugin.

The first bug can be reproduced by checking the options “Rename the ext. to ??_” and “Use AES encryption”.

When attaching the file, the plugin asks for a password and sends the file. The attachment, however, is not encrypted. It can be extracted without having to provide the password.

This is true with all zip options.

The next one is more of an annoyance, but if you use the option “Compress & Encrypt (use PowerArchiver options)”, you are asked for the password 4 times (enter password, confirm password, enter password, confirm password).

The file, however, is actually encrypted.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate RTM, PA 11.6.0.23, PAO 2.03.03.

I’m open to the idea that I’m making a noob mistake, so feel free to correct me if so inclined…:D

I’m running PowerArchiver 2010 11.60 Beta just to try it out, but I’m finding that it is not utilising all the available cores on my i7 (Win7 x64).

When compressing, it won’t seem to do more than two tasks at once (the others just get placed in the queue) and it only uses 2 of the 4 cores that are available.

Any ideas why this is, do i need to change a setting somewhere?

(Compressing both .zipx and .7z)

it depends on what method are you using… LZMA used in 7z and Optimized ZIPX currently supports only 2 cores. New version of LZMA with proper multicore support is in alpha testing right now, as soon as it is out officially, we will add it.

we do black list them, send report of new ones as you find them… we dont do it for every release, because what they do is steal credit cards and purchase PowerArchiver with them.

I used the update via PA at first and then downloaded the latest release but got the same error code each time when trying to install.

It caches MSI file only but not your source files (.cab files with “PowerArch.exe”, etc).
As you can see on Veronika’s screenshot it asks for source media path, but not it’s cache. Keeping source files allows to use msi’s “repair” and “add/remove components” features. And this will help to fix problems without Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. You just can choose “repair” and it will reinstall all the files. Then you will be able to remove the software (i guess the problem occurs because your setup attempts to run some Custom Action on uninstall like “_pasetup.exe /uninstall” and it fails if “_pasetup.exe” does not exist…

as i said, we tried it, it does not work.

As you can see in the screenshot, it cant locate actual MSI, not our files (which are actually inside MSI and not on their own). All that is in PowerArchiver installation is an MSI file.

The Operating system maintains four “attributes” for each file. PowerArchiver uses the “archive” attribute.

When a file is created, this attribute is SET.
When a file is changed it is also SET.
When a file is backed up, it is (usually) RESET.

So :-

“Normal” - Performs classic backup without influencing archive attributes. All selected files are added to the backup.

the attribrute is not changed.

“Full” - Performs classic backup and resets archive attribute. All selected files are added to the backup.

the attribute is RESET after backup.

“Incremental” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set and after backup resets their archive attribute. This mode is suitable for backing up only changed files.

ONLY files with attribute SET are backed up. attribute is then RESET.

“Differential” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set but does not reset their archive attribute after backup.

ONLY files with attribute SET are backed up, attribute is not RESET (so remains SET).

F2 is a shortcut for renaming archives only, not files in archives. Its availability depends if you can really rename archive or not - e.g. archive has read only attribute and archives from CD cannot be renamed.

using version 9+ I was able to replace and / or add files to a jar file and have it load correctly afterwards. With version 11.50 I have to run ‘Repair Zip Archive’ on the jar file after I’ve closed it, then rename the new repaired zip file to the jar file name and use the repaired version to get it to load correctly. Ideas?

as discussed in the email, we are sad to see you go.

However, without proper report we can not fix the issue that you have had with extract mru not wanting to overwrite the file in some folders. I understand that you believe similar issue was fixed before, but unfortunatly that does not help us with locating the issue and I have personally tried it on 5 different computers.

You have been very helpful in the past and for that we thank you. So if you ever get to change your mind, we will be here.

To your answer your two questions, I did try 11.60.12, I don’t think I saved a copy of 10, and the burner is internal.

I also tried to burn from the CD burner but it end of creating an invalid ISO that could be opened but seemed to contain no contents despite it’s size of 380MB.

It should open quite fast - views and changing options does re-load archive (to apply those options), but you are not going to do that every time you open archive, are you?

The archives I’m opening are ones downloaded off the web. Since I associated PA with the archives…I’m seeing this delay between the time PA opens and the time I need to wait for the drive lights to die down before I can access the archive.

next time save it to the disk and then open it (dont use Open but use Save). See if that makes any difference.

Are you running IE? I’m at work right now, and just tried it using IE7 on WinXP Pro x64. Even though the link has a .tgz extension in it, IE7 saved the download with a .tar extension and PA opened it up fine.

At home yesterday I was using Firefox 3.x (not sure what exact version) and it downloaded the file with a .tgz extension, causing confusion for PA. For some reason this kind of incorrect extension confusion seems to be common with .tar/.tgz/.gz files I come across on the Internet (which thankfully isn’t all too often).

I’ll try it again at home to make sure it wasn’t something I did.

Going forward, it is always important to have backup systems in place! one main service I use “FREE” is “Idrive” I have 12 gigs of data free which is use to backup important files, my documents and anything I feel i need to via the internet. Should the worst happen recovering the files could not be simpler!

Keeping backups via an extra disc or harddrive is great but if the worst should happen ie a house fire most of the times the back drives and discs are destroyed or too damaged to use.

These days a majority of internet users have a stable and fast enough connection to stream files online so these online backup companies are able to lower their prices due to the increase in demand.

Grant you wont be able to backup all your movies, music etc… But anything important such as photo’s or personal documents and files would benifit.

nah, its nothing that far fetched at all, there are no gui changes required whatsoever… as you could have seen by now, i dont like trying to guess what the issue is before finding the culprit (experience), but i am pretty sure that win7 changes would be all the way back on my list :).

good recommendation Richard…CCleaner is a must have application in my opinion.

Ditto! Today I compressed a 4gb Folder containing mdb,xls,csv’s,txt and dat files. Took 20 mins and I was using ESET Security Suite 4 But the same with Avast on another system. I have never had to disable my security software during normal work duties! However, I do when i play games.

I downloaded bsdtar which can create the large tar.gz.

It seems PowerArchiver can read that file fine. (Which I sort of thought it could because I think I have used PowerArchiver on large tar.gz files in the past).

Can I request that PowerArchiver pop up a dialog saying it cannot create a large tar.gz file if I ever try to do it again?

Confirmed that it works in XP but requires temp in Vista. I go back and forth between XP and Vista so often it’s hard to keep track of what is happening :)

(for Windows7, current 64bit drivers will work on Vista and XP).

Going back a while I think it was mentioned that the website would be updated to reflect the new version of 2010! looking at the site it has on the home page but all the other pages are getting abit dated.

seems to be some confusion here over MY post maybe?..methinks nameless has seen it as an attack on his original post when in actual fact I was just stipulating the fact that I use the context menu…I saw no mention of that in his original post which is why I aimed my wish at the context menu having the additional options.
