Your PAE file has been corrupted most likely. Usually this happens during download or email, but it could happen due to the bad media as well.

Unfortunatly since it is an encrypted file, it is impossible to repair the archive.

Yep, it has been working fine for 2.5 years now. As mentioned above, I think it is done on the fly so once treshold is reached, 4.5 format is used.

I realise there is/will be delays for translations, but couldn’t the pages at least be consistent?

Reading the main page gives the impression that PA 2004 is available in “over 10 languages” and the language page gives the impression that PA 2004 is available in 12 languages.

This is misleading as PA 2004 is only available in 6 languages.

PowerArchiver has been translated into French, German, Italian, Polish, Slovak, Czech, and Finnish. Older versions of PowerArchiver are available in Greek, Croatian, Portuguese, and Malaysian.

The previous version (PA 2003) is only available in Finnish and Czech.
The older version (PA 2001) is only available in Greek, Croatian, Portuguese and Malaysian.

I realise there is a distinction between the general term “PowerArchiver” and “PowerArchiver 2004”, but how many casual browsers would, especially as both pages use the general term? At least, Finnish and Czech should be incorporated into the “older versions list”.

Similarly, the comparison chart “Championship Manager Test” refers to “PowerArchiver 9.0” - again given the distiction between names above, is this supposed to be a different version to PowerArchiver, PowerArchiver 2001, PowerArchiver 2003 and PowerArchiver 2004 ?

actually, BH format has possibility of encryption, but it is not enabled in PA. So actual problem is that encryption is not enabled.

Indeed it would. We would have to somehow reliably rename the file which would then cause other issues (which is why originally support for converting to same format was removed).

I think the best option would be to make it an right-click option and do to some tricky re-compressing for selected files.

I will move this thread to already requested wish at wishlist forums tomorrow so we have clear sight of it for 9.5…

Just to mention it - AES was not compromised, article talks about how attacker can find connection and might be able to compromise data based on someone sending the file via email, someone else recovering it and knowing something about data from zip header info, which is unencryped. It is all by very, very, very long shot and more deals in absolute security. It very much deals with how compression utilities have always worked.

In that sense, PAE is more secure since nobody knows anything about data encrypted.

Nevertheless, compared to standard zip 2.04g encryption, all these techniques seem as space age technology.

If you are really concerned about security, this would be my priority:
1. chosing coorect, randomized, long password (minimum of 10 characters)
2. securing your own computer against both external and on the site attacks by encrypting important data at all times.

All everyone should keep in mind that not all data needs to be encrypted, we get few emails per week from people that forgot their PAE passwords for important working material that probably should not have been encrypted at all, such us mid-term papers, etc, etc. :-).

Indeed, it is not good if the computer is compromised, however keep in mind that info is stored in the PBS file, not the registry. There was no way to encrypt this data properly without braking support for previous versions of PowerArchiver which would choke on encrypted 160 bit hash :-).

Keep in mind also that PABE is made for casual, repeated backups, and in that sense if someone has access to your PBS script, they also have access to the data you are backing up.

We will try to make it work in next versions, without braking support for PBS in previous versions of PowerArchiver.

Since I discovered and use powerarchiver I always saw a plug-ins subdirectory. I wanted to know what this directory is used for exactly and if there are currently plug-ins that can be used in conjunction with powerarchiver. If no, do you plan to develop such extensions in the future ?

Just so you know, SFX Maker 2.5 sr2b (the version you were talking about) has not been modified since June 2001. I have been working with David Cornish (the original author of SFX Maker) to develop version 2.6, which may eventually be released as open source software.

Do you have Administrator priveleges ? If not, you would get this error.

In Windows XP Home SP2 selecting the internal viewer of PA 9.02 results in a subwindow located partially out of the current one held by the application.

A minor annoiance, but I want to point out that as I hope the trouble will be fixed in a future release.

Yes, as we already announced few times ago, this bug will be fixed for 9.1. Version 9.1 will be avilable in the beginning of the next week.

Yes, we have users running PowerArchiver on Terminal server/Citrix server.

There is only one workaround in registry in you are using Citrix and having problems with displaying PowerArchiver in the taskbar when PowerArchiver is running - in this case contact support.

Try disabling your AV real-time protection as well when doing the test, and see if that improves things.

It’s very dependent on the data then. Try the same with a nightly Firefox distribution and you’ll see a huge advantage for 7-Zip.

Actually, what I think would be a nice solution to such problems would be for PA to default to centered windows and have a checkbox in the settings to remember window position for those who don’t want that.

Flag makes PA create archives in PkZip 4.5 format, and a lot of other archives can not read files create with 4.5 format…

It is not - simply an small bug, each time when you restart PA, window would grow one pixel to the right and one pixel at bottom of the window.

We were alerted to it week ago via support and will be fixed in next update (already is).

List the Desktop directory with “dir /x”. Then all files / dirs will be shown with there short filename (if any). So you can try deleting “FINEPR~1” instead of “finePrint…”.

I’m sorry, I’m running XP Pro SP2, PA 9.02.01 and The Bat! is my e-mail client. I’ve noticed errors any time it comes to deleting a 7-zip archive from within PA.

If it does not then it will not be created. but it might already of deleted the bh file aleadry there cause it has too in order to make way for the new bh file

If you are simply asking which gives the smallest archive file - then I agree with Ivan that 7Zip is usually the answer. However, when I did some sample testing I found that 7Zip was very bad on “compressed” formats such as Jpeg !!

Another consideration may be speed - 7Zip is by far the slowest compression method.
On “normal” filetypes:-
Cab gives the next best compression, usually much faster than 7Zip.
Tar with Bzip2 gives the next best compression, usually faster than Cab.

Note: in my testing 821 Wav files 15,281,041
Bzip2 - about 8 minutes (11.5MB)
Cab - about 25 minutes (11.9MB)
7Zip - nearly 2 hours (11MB)

PS for the Jpegs I tested 10 Files (12,600,516)

cab 7 minutes 12,564,597
bh 3 minutes 12,588,570
bz2 5 minutes 12,615,759 !.expansion.!
7z 45 minutes 12,664,029 !.expansion.!

I would recommend that you do a sample of your own files and judge for yourself.

why create two types of installtion . it would be nice if evryone uses the same installtion. then bugs in installtion can be ironed out by everyone not a hand fully of people. i would like an advance installtion as the current installtion used by non business users is limited. if you disable option it still installs them as it remembers the previous installtion which is not really what most people want

why not have an icon just for the first volum i.e ro1 (a special icon)if thats the first one and the rest have an icon for rar archives. basically it would be nice if you clicked on asy r04 it tells you itt is the fourty part of an archive and can open the file. so if you open any part of tyhe volume it can open up the whole archive

Note: this applies to spanned Zip as well : z01, z02 etc. (also not associated / no icons).

PowerArchiver is designed so it looks good on 90 dpi (Normal) and 120 dpi (Large). 144 dpi is not so common - this would require many window changes to support it.

The only solution would be to make all the windows resizable and then accordinally resize all the components on the window, but this is not planned for near future.

We suggest you to use 120 dpi - it is default large size for most machines.

When we changed to new TAR component for 9.00, we lost support for .z files. It will be returning in upcoming 9.1 release…

OK. At present the “Multi” compression tool is Batch Zip Creation.
It allows compression into any supported format (not only Zip) however, it does NOT support compressing Folders. Only the indivdual files will be compressed into seperate archives.

Inside of archive - I dont see any difference in how mouse selection works between As Web Page and Explorer mode… On the other hand, in Classic mode, to select something with a mouse, your mouse pointer needs to be outside of any of file info columns - to do it properly with larger archives, you can narrow the last column so you can click on area outside of columns to select them.

I hope I was clear enough, was I? Outside archives, in Explorer mode, it does not work at all and thats one of the updates planned for 9.1 as talked about previously….

Out of top of my head, I will say that since you did not close the Excel, PowerArchiver can not access it - MS Office programs usually mark their files in use as in use exclusivly…. I am not sure if we can make it so it shows you an Warning message when you try to update the file (something it would do if you just tried to add that file as new).

Your antivirus probably scans the file before it gets opened, and somehow it sometimes does not work, obviously :-).

Maybe you can disable this scanning option?

It could be that your hard drive is damaged, or that there are errors on it. Try running Check Disk, and set it to fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
If that doesn’t work, then install PowerArchiver to a different directory and try again.
Also, you could try installing it to a removable drive - in that way, if no errors are found, the hard disk is damaged and needs to be replaced!
The RAM may be faulty - remove a module at a time and try (the most common cause of blue screens is faulty RAM!).

Since it also happens at work, the above may not work. If that’s the case, try these:

Run PowerArchiver in Safe Mode. Does it still happen? Try reinstalling Windows (try over the existing installation first, and then a clean install). Run it in compatibility mode.

I know it’s extreme, but maybe it’ll work! PowerArchiver may have its bugs, but it’s still the best archiver I can recommend!

As to host os, it is probably valid for some other type of archives. Basically, we left categories in there even if they are not available for that specific archive.

is it possible to create a ZIP archive with the Deflate64 compression algorithm from within a PBS script? It seems that the wizard in the GUI does not provide an option for that, but maybe it is possible to manually add that option to the PBS script file. Are there any plans to add that option to the wizard GUI?

Yes, you can create a PBS (PowerArchiver Backup Script) which can then be run e.g. from the task manager.

REGFILES.EXE is distributed with older versions of PA (<= 8.8) and it is used ONLY by installation. There is no other way this file was used. Of course, it used to install PowerArchiver with all known file associations so if someone wanted to associate all of them, he could run REGFILES.EXE.

Since v9.0 REGFILES.EXE has been changed with _PASETUP.EXE. Very similar but more powerful.

If you run this utility without parameters, it wouldn’t associate any file (even those checked in Configuration).
If you run with parameter /associate it WILL associate:

ALL files if there is no registry entry:
‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PowerArchiver\General\Associated Archives’ ONLY THOSE FILES that are specified with
‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PowerArchiver\General\Associated Archives’

So this utility is not for home users. It is for multi-user environemnts where administration has set default archives that should be associated with PA in given registry key. Given key is similar to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PowerArchiver\General\Associated Archives’.

B.t.w. “Associate” button from Configuration window should work fine - it should associate only files checked in Configuration window. Also starting PA itself automatically checs for associations (that are checked in Conf. window).

So if you want to do as described in your post, create HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\…\General key and set value for ‘Associated Archives’ similar to your current user key. Then run _PASETUP.EXE /associate and it will do exactly you wanted.

Even when you disable option to associate PA with archives, installation tries to write to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT some other things - information about shell extensions.

So, don’t worry - file associations are not rewrited. And if user (in you case students) are not able to write anything to HKCR then he just won’t be able to use shell extensions. All other things will work fine.

PA supports many hidden options for installation on networks and multi-user environment. Contact us via mail more for information about configuring PA in multi-user environment.

By the way, I also noticed that installing this version of PowerArchiver forces the association of file types even when you don’t want it to. Just confirming what someone else said in another post. This can be annoying, when you’ve spent time carefully associating different archive file types with different utilities, and then this utility comes along and destroys your associations.

if you leave “Associate PowerArchiver with reccomended formats” option in setup checked, it will indeed change your associations ;-). I have tested it and unchecked that option - PowerArchiver did not associate itself with anything.

Amazing…I make a whole frickin post about this and you’re right, the Archiver will just save the archive with a new time stamp. Thats exactly what I wanted it to do. It only replaces if the file name is the same.

I found some errors in our new CAB SFX support engine so I returned old (from 9.00.xx) CAB SFX engine which should work fine with XP SP2. It is little bit slower because it makes CAB archive in $TEMP folder of original CAB SFX file, but seems to work OK with XP SP2.

I also found that strange behaviour of our new CAB SFX engine depends on installed CABINET.DLL in your system, so deipotent can you please send me CABINET.DLL found in your c:\Windows\System32 folder.

It seems that XP SP2 can be extracted (even progress bar is not shown) with some CABINET.DLL and with some now.

this is a unrar.dll problem and should be reported in the winrar makers as its ther dll that is fault with the error message. Powerarchiver are only allowed to use the unrar.dll so they are bound by that code, hence the problem.

I am assuming you are reffering to deletion of backup file.

This is how it works - lets say that your backup file is called backup.zip, if you leave “do not delete…” option unchecked, PA will first delete original backup file and then create an new one. If you check that option, PA will update current backup file (add and replace).

It does not delete actual files that were being backed up.

it would be nice if powerarchiver could look at the file and say whether the extention is incorrect and tell you. Irnfanview does this. with image file foormats so why can’t pa with artchive file formats
