    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT

    Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

    BETA PowerArchive 22.00.11 - Windows 11 Context Menu duplicated/additional tier

    The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

    Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

    Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

    The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
    I know it has non standard quotes in it.

    However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

    Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

    Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

    When will a fix be implemented?

    Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

    PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

    I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
    PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
    I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

    This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

    I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

    However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

    What can I do to sort this out?

      I created a multi volume Deflate64 archive with maximum file size of 15,000 KB. I set the options to move the files to the archive and delete the original files.

      :eek: I ran out of disk space during the process. It did not create the main multi volume zip file. It created a partial multi volume file (z731) and a bunch of zero byte files (z732 … z759).

      :( I tried using pkware to open z01. It asked for the location of the last disk but would not accept the directory name. Powerarchive says z01 is not a valid archive.

      Is there any way to recover these files?

      :) Thanks,
      Forrest

      Mult Volume files created;
      15,000 KB files - downloads.z01 (…) downloads.z730
      3,304 KB file - downloads.z731
      zero byte files - downloads.z732 (…) downloads.z759

      Below are my settings for the “Add” dialog box on the Options Tab.

      Action: Move Files
      Compression: Maximum (slowest)
      Profile: ZIP Default
      Additional Options: Include System and hidden files
      Advanced ZIP Options: Use Deflate64
      Multiple Disk Spanning: Cuistom
      Max. volume size: 15000 kBytes
      Mode: pkZip/PA 7.0 Compatible
      Zip Encryption: Disabled

        Obvious things first:

        !) What OS?
        2) Did you create archives on the same Drive / Partition as the files?
        3) Do you have another Drive/Partition to work with?
        4) What is the size of your Drives/Partitions?
        5) What were the original files?

        If the answer to 2) is yes - then do not create any new files/directories (or copies) on it.

          Windows XP home addition.

          1. Did you create archives on the same Drive / Partition as the files?
            Yes, I created them on drive two partition G:

          2. Do you have another Drive/Partition to work with?
            Yes, I’ve already cleared additional space off.

            Yes, I’ve already cleared additional space off.

            Is that correct?
            On this drive you tried to create an archive of ~15M*760 = ~1.275GB
            You have 25GB free and it failed because the drive was FULL?

            Something seriously wrong here… :confused:
            You didn’t clear the additional space on this G:drive I hope?

            I don’t know if you can recover anything from the incomplete split Zip.

            Hopefully, spwolf or Ivan will chip in on that.

            Are the original files (not the Zip archives) still in trash/recycle bin?
            Maybe you need an “undelete type” tool?

            [Off Topic]
            For future reference:
            Deflate64 on RAR,PDF,ZIP, ISO is not a good idea as they are already compressed,
            just store them into split Zip.

                I under estimated the hard space I would need by a few gig. I won’t make that mistake again, but I really need to recover the files left in the multi volume archive. I was just looking for a quick way to clear essential files off the 160 gig drive so I can repartition and install several operating systems. To do this I needed to clear some space on the 80 gig drive.

                Yes, I cleared the additional space on G: drive. No, there is nothing in the recycle bin. I have archived and moved other files since this happened.

                Here are the settings for file size when spanning volumes. I wanted the option of copying to a FAT32 partition so I kept the file sizes under 2 gig.

                Multiple Disk Spanning: Custom
                Max. volume size: 15000 kBytes

                15000 kBytes = 1.5 Gigabytes
                760 * 1.5 GB = 11.40 Gigabytes

                Thanks,
                Forrest

                    15000 kBytes = 1.5 Gigabytes 760 * 1.5 GB = 11.40 Gigabytes

                    No (approximation ignoring decimal/hex argument) -

                    1 GB {Giga} = 1000 MB {Mega}
                    1 MB {Mega} = 1000 kB {kilo}

                    So 15000 kB = 15 MB

                    Whereas
                    1.5 GB = 1500 MB = 1500 000 kB

                    For intended 11.4 GB -> did you activate “Make Large Zip File (over 4GB)” ?

                    But too late now :(

                    I’ll leave it to spwolf regarding recovering files from incomplete spanned Zip.

                          you could try repairimg the file using the file repair or you could try winmzip as they might be able to sovle your problem but if that fails then i would try advance zip repair. if that failes powerarchiver which might work but as you’ve tried that the only hope then is that the file can be recovered by someone canbn you post it here so we can try to recover the files for you.

                              Sorry for the delay. I’ve tried a few things but still have not been able to access the files.

                              :cool: I have resolved myself to the fact I may not be able to recover the files. I am continuing mostly out of curiosity now.

                              I have combined the files into one file using the instructions here;
                              http://www.repairfile.com/faq.htm

                              10.3 GB (11,089,920,000 bytes)

                              I tried “Advanced Zip Repair” but it locked up. It may have had problems because I was using to many system resources. I’ll try to rerun it overnight.

                              I am looking into the structure of zip files at this link;
                              http://www.pkware.com/company/standards/appnote/

                              I am using this hex editor which handles large files;
                              http://www.sweetscape.com/010editor/

                              If I find anything new I’ll make a post.

                              p.s. davidsplash - I’m not sure if winmzip was a mispelling as I cannot find any information on it. Besides “Advanced Zip Repair”, I have tried powerarchiver, pkzip, zipzag, and winzip. None of them will open the file.
