You should do an search on google.com . I vaguely remember it is possible. However since this is an PowerArchiver forum it is not something we usually discuss, maybe some other user will know more

Something must have gone awry with my system when I posted that. Since that time, I’ve been unable to reproduce the error. It may have had something to do with having the U3 version installed previously, but more testing is needed.

@spwolf: there is no real timeframe. Once we start implementing all the features, and find it major-feature complete, we will start having alpha’s. Thanks for clarifing …

you can make an batch script with two calls. They will be called one after each other… but there really wont be an easy way to do it until we actually add that feature…

Okay I was able to compress the entire directory with no errors. However, I am now having another problem. While trying to convert(using the ‘convert’ shell ext) 460+ zip files (all contain pdf’s, each zip is between 5k and 200 Mb in size) it crashes about every 20-50 files during compression with the same type of error I was having with the large directory compression. I am using the 9.62 module you pointed me to, and a reboot has not helped this problem. Error signature AppName: powerarc.exe AppVer: 9.6.2.3 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000 Let me know if you need any more info

I’ve been searching for the answer for a while, and with a little investigative work I found a method that works. It isn’t perfect but it produces the desired results. I searched through the registry for any clues on how a file can be scanned from the context menu. I only found a path to avgse.dll, which of course will not work. No mention anywhere of variables that could be used in the parameters for it. However, I did find that you can put a path and file after the /SE switch. I created a folder on my hard drive called PATemp Changed the Temp Location, in the Folders tab, to this new folder, e.g. C:\PATemp\ In Program Locations the Optional virus scanner field is C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG7\avgw.exe, and the parameters field contains /SE "C:\PATemp" Now I haven’t used all of PA’s features, but the virus scan will create a temporary folder in PATemp and scan the files within. After the process ends PA deletes that temp folder. I can’t say for sure what other PA processes create a temp folder there, and whether or not they are deleted upon completion. This is where the imperfection comes in: if anything else is in that folder, AVG will scan it too. Anyway, it works for me so I’m happy. :D

Each new build of Vista has (to me, anyhow) improved in speed quite a bit. The pre-beta 2 builds were sluggish, but the interface responsiveness has improved drastically since then. I have a reasonably decent system (Athlon fx-57, 2 gigs of RAM, geforce 7900gtx, etc) but it even runs well on my laptop, which is of course a bit more modest (1.8 ghz Pentium M, 1 gig RAM, ATI Radeon 9600). The beta 2 revision driver updates from nVidia and ATI have also made a big difference in gaming performance as well. One of the real annoyances with the previous builds was the network discovery… sometimes it would take a full minute for Vista to show me computers on my LAN at home and at work, but 5472 is very snappy. Since it won’t even be relased for at least another 6 months yet, this bodes well for the final release.

When using the full PowerArchiver program, I have enabled the option to “Use normal relative path” as I add folders, because I always want each folder compressed along with the files within it. This option works as it should, and the results are what I need. However, most of the time, I find it much more convenient to use the Explorer Shell Extensions so that I can simply right-click on a folder name and select “Compress to …”. There does not seem to be an option to use the normal relative path with the shell extensions, only “Save full folder info”, which is not what I need. Is there a way to use the Explorer Shell Extensions and still be able to compress the folders themselves to a zip file along with the files within them?

I find that it is useful sometimes to work with “container files” (DEC VAX VMS style) to hold all data in one place. This allows me to effectively ignore anything else in that directory or folder, as the important stuff sits in the container zip. The concept is pretty much the same as ordinary files within an archive; where if you want to, you can open, for example, a pdf or document with the appropriate application, do things to it and save the altered file back to the archive. The difference in this case is that there is a third level i.e. zip file holding encrypted (pae) zips, in turn containing other application files some of which may themselves be further encrypted. I realise of course that there is no compression advantage between the “container” zip and the pae’s within - it’s only a file management strategy. I take your point about the other zip behaviour I mentioned.

Is the problem that paths are not saved or that you dont see them, or that subfolders are not added? IE. Does changing View> Explorer display style show you the folders? thanks,
