0.2.4 is an old version :p anyway -
From the 0.2.4 link I used the Belgium mirror and downloaded wampp-0.2.4c.zip
Size : 25.2 MB (26,473,212 bytes)
Size on disk : 25.2 MB (26,476,544 bytes)

PA Test - OK
Unzip into folder wampp-0.2.4c and got
4431 files, 651 folders

So it looks like you did have a download problem.

PowerArchiver does not create any folders there….

This is not standard splitted GZIP archive, nor GZIP supports spliting. So I think this backup utility splits files in it’s own way - just file/size splitting.

You can create joined archive even under command line:

copy /b file.gza + file.gzb + file.gzc file.gz

and then open file.gz. Try this.

the 7zip developers are going to be adding rar faetures like repairing archives the same way winrar does. So why use rar especally as they update their format more regualy than their unrar.dll which other people use to have decompression of rar.

I would just like to make a public thank you to the Power Archiver support team. I encountered as have some others it seems the problem with the new registration process and not having login details to retrieve the new registration code. Keep in mind that windows file system limit is 256 characters

Actually, if you use the Unicode version of the CreateFile() API, and you prefix the name with “\?” you can get a maximum of something around 32000 characters in a path on Win 2000 or later (ie., not Win9x).

I know it’s not the most intuitive (and I don’t know if it’s supported by delphi or other components you use), but it’s possible. Also it’s quite possible (as you mention) that the shell might not be able to handle those paths.

I get file sizes reported by Windows Explorer as 1.90 GB (2,048,000,000 bytes)

This is correct - 2000000 x 1kB = 2000000 x 1024 Bytes.

I think that addresses the issue. As long as the development team know what the issue is and what is causeing it. It is up to them if/when they fix it. (or complaining to Delphi.)

This points the problem out with several other utilities too.

Don’t forget about the ISO image decompressing ignores filenames with foreign charaters without any messages.

I don’t think it is possible to force the target drive/folder for compression.

Again, I don’t think so, apparently PA will only display “Compress with options” if at least one format is also activated.

Of course, if you disable the Shell Extensions completely then everyone has to use PA’s dialogue where these options would be available for setting/changing. But that is not a good solution.

The problem is what to do if another utility has been installed later which takes over the association? Now restoring the “original” is incorrect.
You should create associations using the desired utility. It is just a pity that windows doesn’t provide a nice way to do this.

Or just stick with PA - try 7z format for better compression :)

Don’t forget to update from the beta to the full 9.5 release when it is available. :D

ok, so you WinXp x64 users - make sure PA installs under Program Files and not Program Files (x86). Windows will not let shell extensions to run from x86 folder!

This is only valid for people who had already installed PA on the computer so PA’s installation will look at last installation folder. New installations will go into “64bit” Program files by default.

Yes, the normal ZIP password is not very secure and you can find “cracking” utilities on the internet.

In this discussion thread, we are using encryption to refer to the “AES encryption” options for ZIP compression (as spwolf said).

Note: in PowerArchiver there is also “PA encryption” - this is also as secure as AES, but cannot be invoked from PA Backup Express Lite.

PACL is the command line version of PowerArchiver for compression.
PA license is valid for PACL, no extra license requirements needed.

i checked the source code of the unzip utility, and the solution is actually there. i can post the explanation and some code implementing it if some people are interested.

The issue should be fixed in Final Beta.

there is an known bug with deleting folders with dot in fron of their names…

it will force it, as option text suggest, it is useful for compressing text files/documents since it achieves the best compression there (better than standard LZMA in 7z).

shoe posted an image of buffer overflow of Internet Explorer…which got this thread back from dead.

In any case, Buffer Overflows do happen all the time in MS Windows (you can monitor system calls to see how often), problem is that stack based BO’s can be misused, but not heap based. If you find the reason why are you getting it, please let us know.

These occured using V9.25 (2004)

I managed to create number of CRC errors by processing UNIX file paths > 255 characters. Software should check the final file path lengths when doing batch unpack of files. This is particularly important when using the option to preserve directory structure in a folder named after the original archive.

Need to warn user if path will be longer than 250 characters.
Clearer error message would be helpful.

Encountered a corrupt TAR.GZ file, gave a “CRC” error, but program still gave final dialog that said “all files processed correctly”. Clearly not.

We need a logging mechanism, including error logs. This is a batch program; I ran something like 1000 archives through it yesterday and 50,000 files.

no, option is automatically enabled now… pa write 2.04g header if the zip being created ends up less than 4GB or 65,555 files

this is an known Internet Explorer issue. This is why many websites instruct you to download using Save As option.

The suggestion is for a new WishList type forum dedicated to the topic of adding new compression formats and plug-in type adaption.
Like wishlist, ther is no commitment by conexware beyond “general” forum maintenance.
Deleting or closing duplicates/Moving posts fromother fora etc.

If PA is set to open in a maximized state, why does it start up sized in its unmaximized state and THEN maximize its window? This window resizing on startup becomes annoying. Why doesn’t it just start up maximized in the first place if its set to do so?

when i rightclick a file i have two PA context menu items. one is “Compress to ZIP + Options…” and “Compress to Filename.zip” for the first context item, i set it to move files but the second option only copies them. is there any way both can use the same settings?

Same as when you use -x switch with 7-ZIP command line (-x=0 for store, -x=9 for ULTRA)
