Problem with directories/files containing accented characters
-
I don’t know whats wrong …
I use powerarchiver 2006 beta 4 on two different computers.
On the source computer pa has been customized (I have modified some of the default options of the program).
And on the target one, I just installed it without customizing it.
On the source computer I compressed the “my document” folder in a my documents.zip archive.
In my “my documents” folder there are directories/files containing accented characters.
But when I extract the content of my .zip file on my target computer, accented characters contained in directories/files are not translated correctly.
Why ?
What’s the option controlling that ?
IS pa completely unicode compliant ? -
I guess the question is more, is the ZIP format unicode compliant, to which the answer is AFAIK “no”.
The two machines might differ in the system locale setting. Look here http://www.mihai-nita.net/20050611a.shtml to see how to check and change the system (not user) locale.

ZIP is not unicode compliant, so for unicode saving/extracting use 7-ZIP. Also, make sure the following things:
- is the “Translate OEM” option (Options -> Configuration -> Misc) same on both machines
- is the System default translation for NONUNICODE filenames same on both - check link that marci send

No, they are strictly the same concerning “local settings”…

Thanks Ivan for those explanations…
Will Zip become unicode compliant a day ? : it is a real drawback of tthis format …
Widely known and the most used today but with this lack of extended characters support I think it is very difficult to use it for those who daily have accented characters in their file/directory names … -
Hi Claude,
you simply have to enable non-unicode support for language you are using, in your language settings @ control panel. This will do the trick.
thanks,
