Can you include .3MF to the list of re-compressible formats? Its structure is similar to MS Office 2007 documents and Open Document Format. It is a ZIP Deflate archive with XML data and some JPG, and/or PNG pictures inside. Otherwise, if I try to compress .3MF it bearly makes it smaller unless I recompress .3MF to the Store setting then it makes it a lot smaller.
Wish they all would move to 7zip ZSTD in the first place so that the optimized file size with FileOptimizer would be 50% of the ZIP Deflate version. And there would be no extra compression needed :)
I noticed that the option to add the optimize archive function to the context menu is missing on Windows 10.
Opening each archive with the interface in order to click it becomes tedious with many files.
Same for others functions like Remove Archive Encryption
Compression sampler

it would be great if you had a compression sampler so can i choose what format is best for a certain file type.
-
Would that be a feature that would estimate and display results for diff. compression formats for the selected file(s)?
Or would it have to compress the file(s) into multiple formats (in a temp folder) and report back the results to the user?
I’m currious how this might work. Not to critisize.

Here you go… (left to right - best to worst)
Text (.txt) 7z, cab, bz2, gzip, zip, bh
Word (.doc) cab, bz2, 7z, gzip, zip, bh
Music (.wav) 7z, bz2, cab, gzip, bh, zip
Graphic (.jpg) cab, bh, zip, gzip, bzip2, 7z
Graphic (.bmp) 7z, cab, bzip2, zip, bh, gzip
Acrobat (.pdf) 7z, cab, zip, bh, gzip, bzip2
Feel free to add others…

In the previous compression tool I worked with, comprexx, available at http://www.comprexx.com, such a tool was added …

Thanks but I prefer PA to tell me for my selection i.e the file or files or the folder or the folders i have selected for compression. I insist a tool to estimate the output size for various compression formats.

Well current tools available, such as the “sampler” referred to by Claude, do not work this way and cannot provide this information.
Output size is very dependant on input data (not just filetypes) so if you can find something that can do this for multiple compression formats - with any accuracy - I would be very surprised.
How wrong could the estimate be before you would consider it a “bug”? :p

PA could suggest the best archiving option, basing on the file extension…
…but that wouln’t be 100% right, anyway…
dunno…

Exactly, think of ‘.psf’ as a good example. I expect only PA would “know” what this was.
Or, more common, what about ‘.doc’ which could be different wp files or simple ascii text.
