Review of Opera 15

  • Alpha Testers

Here’s a quick review of Opera 15 which has just been released.

    It sucks.
Don’t waste your time downloading it.

    Oh and it sucks.

    😞

Shame. In many ways, I have always preferred Opera to other browsers out there. But every time I tried to use it, I found there were too many pages it could not render correctly. So I deleted it. I have thought this might be the one. My hopes were obviously misplaced.

I’ve never had a problem with Opera rendering pages, except for sites that used browser sniffing and that could be sorted 9 times out of 10 by masking as FF or IE. But that’s the sites fault not a fault of Opera.

Well there should be no issues with sites rendering properly now.
But it’s such a pile of crap you wouldn’t use it long enough to find out if that’s true or not.

Bitterly disappointed in v15…not happy at all in the direction they seem to be heading with their browser.
just hope that continued user pressure will have some major bearing on their decision to follow down the ‘Chrome’ path…:(
I continue to download the latest releases in the hope of major changes but find myself quickly uninstalling once again.

They don’t appear to be listening to users at all Moles
Take bookmarks for example. They heard we were not happy so rather than have native bookmarks they gave us an extension. Yep! That went down well.

I didn’t even bother downloading today’s release to be honest. Nothing had changed for the better since the last snapshot, so I wasn’t going to waste my time. 😞

I will watch the progress of this dumbed down browser for improvements but I’m not hopeful about it’s future.

Thanks for informative feedback once again ‘Lux’…
I follow it’s progress in their forum threads and I’m pretty sure the complaints
just fall on ‘deaf ears’…there never seems to be any positive feedback from the development team,
I think it’s pretty much use it as we design it or ‘naff’ off elsewhere.
didn’t I read somewhere that the customer was always right…;)

For now I will stick with v12.15 as it might be the last version of Opera I’ll use.

I had a customer once who told me that customer is always right.
Not in my fecking shop he’s not, I replied. 😉

I think the Opera devs are taking a similar stance.

At least they’ve promised us a 12.16. But how much longer will they do similar releases of the Opera 12 branch?

Who knows but if it at least stays with a v12 structure then I for one will be testing it…:)

if however they eventually phase it out in favour of the 'chrome-opera’
then it will be time to look elsewhere I think…:(

In my defence the guy was a complete prick. 😃

Yes so will I. It does everything I want from a browser so in the meantime I will stick with it.

I guess that would be back to firefox for me. Or I’ll maybe give Sleipnir a try as a few folk in the Opera blog comments have been praising it a fair bit. There’s no linux version though so it would be back to firefox on that.

I wasn’t aware of that browser…just popped over there and it reminds me of the early days of Opera as I was checking out their skins…:)

I felt bogged down with firefox after months and months of testing…:(
maybe I just got fed-up with all the plug-ins…:)

I’d never heard of it before neither until a couple of weeks ago.

Ah but extensions are the future, just ask Opera. :p

  • Alpha Testers

I often wonder if we expect just too much from a browser…
everyone wants or needs something different from a browser which is why
I think Opera became so popular…if the developers continue to go down this road whereby
they are taking the tweaking & modifying abilities from the end user then I just foresee
huge numbers looking elsewhere for a browser then can modify to their hearts content.

surely the developers know why their browser became so popular in the first place…😕

I think they did know, but unfortunately Opera got rid of them. Restructuring I think they called it.

As it stands at the moment all 15 is useful for is the zombie user who only open their facebook page and spends their entire day there. If you need something more then you’re going to have to look elsewhere.

  • Alpha Testers

There has been a bit of a change as far as bookmarks are concerned, seems they weren’t quite prepared for the backlash that came their way. Whether that will repair the damage that has already been done or not I can’t say.

However, after listening to your feedback, the first thing we have done is to make sure to prioritize the work on native bookmarking functionality.

Interesting…it may be then that they have decided to stop and listen to their users.
    all is not lost then…:D

I’m still testing v15 with about 5 or 6 of the ‘chrome’ extensions which replaced some of the missing opera
functions we were used to…it’s still nowhere near as good as v12 and earlier with my custom menus though.

    It’s a start if nothing else. 😉

You must have more patience than me. I just found it far too annoying to use, even just for testing purposes and it’s no longer on my system. Maybe once the bookmarks are reinstated I’ll give it another go.
Oh and an option to turn off that stupid discover feature too. 😃

  • Alpha Testers

Finally gave up on it again today and returned to O12.16…
so much nicer being able to tweak and modify at my leisure…:)
I must admit though I was enjoying a couple of those chrome extensions…:)

  • conexware

    is it getting any better?

  • Alpha Testers

    No…
depends what you’re looking for in a browser I suppose…
I keep checking the latest builds but it going to be a while
before it gets close to Opera 12.15 usabilities.

    currently checking Opera v18.0.1277.0

  • Alpha Testers

Other than a couple of settings you can change via flags, there’s nothing to get excited about. Still no bloody bookmarks except for a bookmarks bar and if they think that is suitable as a replacement they are seriously deluded.

Still try every build as it comes along, shake my head at how the mighty have fallen, then remove it once again. 😞
