From the guys who gave us Opera comes a new browser.
A technical preview has been released which you can download from here
Chrome based but the UI is more like the old Opera with notes, bookmarks, (email coming later down the line). Basically all the things that Opera ASA told us was not possible in Opera 15+
Maybe one worth keeping an eye on, for us old Opera devotees.
I have heard many of you refer to Total Commander.
I currently use Xyplorer –- which in many ways is nice. But (a) there is almost always some glitch that causes it to crash if I use it as the default file manager, and (b) the developer’s help files are less than adequate, and the developer won’t give any help.
So I am thinking about changing.
Are you happy with it? Is it stable? Instructions clear?
I do not want cloud backup. I have a service and am happy with it.
I do not want imaging backup. Tried it and didn’t like it.
I want a program that will backup the files I specify efficiently (without insanely slowly down the system), on a schedule, and with some decent options (exact copy, plain copy, versions, etc.).
I have used a program I liked (SecondCopy) for at least a dozen years. Never thought I would change. But they are now on beta 4 on Version 9 – after starting on beta 1 some 7-8 months ago.
It is still plagued with nagging problems. I keep trying it, finally uninstall the beta and reinstalling version 8. This is getting tiresome.
It is time to look for an option.
However, I am not having any luck. I keep find online backups and imaging software. But I don’t want either.
Ideas?
I would appreciate your guidance.
Hugh
I need help to my accidentally deleted pictures from memory card. Is there any software to get back lost digital pictures from memory card?
Here’s a quick review of Opera 15 which has just been released.
It sucks.
Don’t waste your time downloading it.
Oh and it sucks.
:(
For backup my documents i use cobian backup for some years. Ones everything is set, it runs by itself and the user don’t have to worry that there will be a failure with the backup.
Are there people who uses cobian backup or is everyone using PA backup?
I don’t know if i must ask the next question in this section or in the wishlist.
Cobian backup is for sale. Is Conexware interested in the program or trying to implement the advanced option(scheduled backup parts)?
Now i’m using the standard version of PA, but scheduling the backup is the only thing that i’m not satisfied about.
I am looking for a good development tool that will help me track revisions of software I am creating, and that is web based. Just looking for suggestions on what others use.
And not one that is hosted through another solution but that I can host myself.
Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)! This means we’ve completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to our OEM partners. They can now begin preparing new Windows 8 PCs and devices they’ll introduce starting with General Availability. For more on RTM, I suggest reading this blog post from Steven Sinofsky on the Building Windows 8 blog.
So when will folks be able to get their hands on the new Windows 8 RTM code?
People will be able get Windows 8 starting on October 26th either by upgrading for $39.99 or on a new PC or device. And if you buy an eligible Windows 7 PC today, you will be able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer.
However, we have a number of programs that provides various audiences early access to the Windows 8 RTM code to help prepare for Windows 8 as it enters the marketplace this fall:
•August 15th: Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via your MSDN subscriptions.
•August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions.
•August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization.
•August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8.
•August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8.
•September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.
More info here.
When I try to select the forum on website shown on my WP7 phone, it never shows the dropdown list, It just reloads the page.
When clicking on community. the dropdown list flashes by and the page is reloaded.
Anything you can do about this?
So Opera is moving to Webkit. Presto will be no more.
Opera gears up at 300 million users
300 million users strong, Opera moves to WebKit
Good or bad? I’m undecided.
If the great things that Opera is good at, security, customisation and innovation continue then I suppose it won’t make much difference to the normal user. At least it will bring an end to those sites that use browser sniffing to prevent Opera users using their sites properly.
Any thoughts anyone?
Hi,
If you have ccleaner and the winap2.ini file if you copy and paste the below script I wrote it will give you an option to clear all recent files including backup scripts.
CCleaner does include PowerArchiver but it is prior 2009 and doesnt include the latest versions recent history. Hense why i wrote this.

I just need a refresher on the best way to go about changing my boot up drive…
I have win7 installed on c drive and e drive but i want the e to become the c drive which will then enable me to format the larger current c drive.
can you guys give me a refresher please on the safest way to do it ?
many thanks…very late and very tired here so I thought I best ask the experts…:)
‘Lux’ you wouldn’t happen to be running ‘Opera’ 11.60 Build 1185 would you ?
curious to know if you’re encountering any page reloading issues when viewing PA forum?
on occasion for me it just reloads and displays lines of code as opposed to the correct layout but another refresh seems to cure it.
Did anyone try PA on Windows 8 yet?
Question for you guys…
I’ve never used any of the current breeds of software that enable you to install an operating system onto a virtual drive and I’m wondering if this is at all possible…
can I install vmware workstation then create a virtual drive via it and install the OS of my choice and then after a period of time if I’m satisfied with it can I then copy that OS from the virtual drive to a secondary hard drive or is that not possible?
or do I have to reinstall from scratch to secondary hard drive ?
I’m hoping to install an older OS and once it’s running as I want it I want to take an image of it using Acronis True Image…that way I can use it or store it.
I’m relying on your wealth of knowledge in this dept…:)
many thanks,
Mike.
What Antivirus and Firewall solution do you trust?
-
I’ve tried different antivirus programs (Avast, nod32, DrWEB, pccillin, McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky etc.). :D
I like Norton Internet Security and Kaspersky Internet security… But i can’t choose between them…
What do you think?..
-
I liked KAV 6 a lot, I think it is pretty nice. I run FPROT 6 Beta right now because it is fast.

Yes, KAV / KIS 6 is great, I like their “Interactive mode”…
But it is slow… when working with archives… -
you really have to get dual core system, just so one core can run AV at all times :-).
-
:)
-
I use e-Trust anti-virus (from CA). I get it free with my DSL. Firewall, I use BID (BlackIce Defender) and ZoneAlarm (depends on which computer your are talking about), plus hardware router with built-in firewall.

Read this…
http://www.uninformed.org/?v=4&a=4
It’s about some AV company patching the kernel in a none safe way.

Nice…
But what do you suggest?
Should we uninstall antivirus software and never use it?
And… What antivirus program do you use? -
I’m not saying you should never use a AV. It was just a informal document. It’s not posible in x64 and Vista to patch the kernel.
At the moment i’m using NOD32.
-
why didn’t you just call them about it?

he was advertising something, so he pretended like he was answering in the thread. Hence, the ban :-).

Ok, must not be good at advertisement, because I missed it, either that or I’m just really slow (which is verytrue also). :D
-
why not try avast antivirsu they have a commercial and free versions avaliable
-
-
now the free MS security essentials
-
@guido…
I was tempted to try the MS security essentials but thought better of it because of my stable system with Comodo Firewall and Nod32 Anti-Virus but I am interested in hearing your thoughts on the new security essentials. -
I’m using MS security essentials on two of my machines. Easy install. No problems with it this far.
-
no problems so far.
-
I don’t trust any of them. I try to use common sense, but also Microsoft Security Essentials. :)
-
I did give microsoft security essentials a try but thought it a tad hungry on resources compared to my existing setup.
-
i dont use any either… once in a while when some coworker scares me enough, i install our licensed version of fprot… but as usual, even the fastest AVs slow down everything so it does not make sense to have very fast computer only to give half of it to AV :)
-
Currently I use McAfee Secuirty Centre as provided Free of charge by My ISP SKY.
But it McAfee like Norton take so much resource from our Systems that in the long run it becomes a problem rather than a cure.
However, I have been working with the Avast Team on the new version of Avast Internet Secuirty and Antivirus. It has just been released too so give it a trial…
It is a much simpler interface and less bitty like the old version and on of the main advantages is the reduced impact on system resources… It is deffinetely something I will be implementing and recomending to friends and clients.

Risky wouldn’t you say Boss?
not using any of them on a regular basis surely leaves you open to attacks?
I’d love to be in a position where I didn’t need either but in this day and age that’s definitely not an option. -

I’d love to be in a position where I didn’t need either but in this day and age that’s definitely not an option. You want a laugh! I once had the same view… I would once every month install a virus checker update do a deep scan then uninstall it.
This technique worked for 1 year! then one morning i decided to boot the computer up… and Nothing it would not recognise the MFT or the OS… I ran a Recovery disc and managed to get into Safe Mode, after installing Avast I did a boot scan and it found 102 Threats most 10 were back door root kits which then downloaded in other files…
Thank GOD i wasnt into internet banking… Now I dare work or play on my system without a Hardware Firewall, Software Firewall and Spyware, Mallware and Virus Protection. :D

if you have legal, up to date windows, are properly connected to router with firewall instead of directly to cable modem, and do not click on suspicious stuff (or at least check it with AV), you will be as cool as me ;-)

I agree. I don’t have any anti-virus software installed for about 2 years and I didn’t have any problems so far.
Just do not run unsigned .exes from unknown websites or from spam e-mails, do not disable UAC and other “preinstalled” security features and use genuine software… Use Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer… that’s it…btw, i am connected to cable modem directly. With enabled Windows Firewall of course.
-
btw, to test cracks I use Virtual PC…
-
@NTFS:
btw, to test cracks I use Virtual PC…
Agreed! very usefull Addition to Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional.
-
well, i don’t like the version included in Windows 7. It is too “integrated” to the host os.
Virtual PC 2007 witch runs on Windows XP / Vista makes more “real” pcs and is easier to configure. -
@NTFS:

these days i just use virustotal shell extension ;-)
-
fprot and nod32 both are good and light on resources….nod32 requires some getting used to…I sometimes have been asked by purchasing dept. in my company…about AV purchases…I normally side with nod32

Is this limited to Windows only AV? I have been happy to use a Linux desktop computer to combat anti-virus. But I use ClamAV – both for linux and windows computers. It is open source and a decent anti virus – not as sophisticated as the commercial ones but it’s enough for those who know how to basically stay clear of viruses. :):):)
In my opinion, any av is good, it’s the user who are my concerns – Most computer users I know, both at work and at home just don’t care about such things – they just want the computer to take care of themselves.
Educating them doesn’t seem to work – must needs to educate in a way they will get hooked, now that’s a challenge. :):)
-

Not as such, but as PowerArchiver is Windows only; it is assumed that most members will be using Windows.
@mbwallace4:In my opinion, any av is good, it’s the user who are my concerns
In so far as “better than no AV”, I would agree. But with an AV the biggest problem is “false positives” vs missed “attacks”.
I have abandoned two AV because of repeated “false positives” - however, so far, no missed “attacks” (touch wood).
Thus another “measure” I use is resource loading.
With an old PC, I need to be able to able to “disable” e.g. playing games, NOT on-line. So for example, MSE fails at this. -
VIPRE Enterprise and Nod32 get my vote for fast/low resources…MSE for best free product.
-
NOD32 had false positives with PA… how do they dare! :-)…
-

Yea, I tend to think of it as people or users not limited to Windows only – Helping users to get their computers up and running brought me to a lot of ‘places’ – need to learn them before I could give support –
