I am not 7 or 8 wizard, but it seems as if I can avoid the constant prompts if I (a) on the PA icon on my desktop, I right-click, choose “Properties,” “Advanced,” and then “Run as administrator.” If that does not work with some programs, (b) I can find the main program.exe, and after right clicking, and choosing “Properties,” and then “Security,” and changing permissions there. Finally ©, it seems to matter if I run the exe installing the program by right clicking and choosing “Run (the installation file) as an Administrator.” It appears that that selection gets inherited somehow by the program itself.

If this is rotten advice, please say so. I have stumbled across these trying to avoid unnecessary conflicts and dialogue boxes.

The only problem is that you really only want to run something as with administrator privileges when you need to. On other occasions when you’re not expecting to need administrator privileges it’s safer not to have them.

small tweak, to upload to subfolder, omit the root folder (dropbox in above post) and type in /test/ to upload to initial subfolder, and that works.
Uploading to /test/test1/ is what needs to be fixed and is logged in.

There are still some problems with version 16.10.14.

When I extract an archive (RAR) via shell then the first extracting file still isn’t displayed.

Next thing is that, when extracting via main window, the extraction can’t be canceled. When I click on the cancel button and then on “no” PA keeps extracting. After that the cancel button doesn’t work anymore. And if I click on the cancel button while the extraction is paused then the extraction will be continued.

Couldn’t find mine… and totally forgot to look in the Junk folder. Duh! Thanks for the reminder. So obvious. :rolleyes:

We’ve just tested two files, a 170mb file and a 1GB file, via Compress to 7z and Compress w options>7z
Compression profile changed to LZMA2 Ultra.
Also tried with LZMA Ultra.

In both cases, both files resulted in same file size of the compressed 7z file.
Seems fixed.

If you happen to come across a specific situation where the issue seems present, please let us know and we’ll test immediately.

Here I have a 263 character filename to which I added characters to rename and it worked. Also removed characters to a shorter filename, also worked.

Maybe we can give it a try with your sample file and settings as described in my previous post. Hopefully we’ll be able to reproduce it then.

Not sure if my explanation will suffice, but here goes…

tar puts multiple files into a single (tar) file.

gzip compresses one file (only).

So if the files don’t have the correct extension the program used to open it will try and fail simply because it tries to open it based on the extension. ;)

thats a good explanation… tar has no compression but can store multiple files.
So several compression formats can be used to compress tar files (gz, bz2, xz).

When server is not configured properly, it gives you wrong extension. File on server could very much be .tar but server gives it to browser as tar.gz and the issue is there.

It lets you disable specific shell extensions.

You can try seeing which one exactly is creating this issue for you and maybe if it is due to presence of some other shell extensions as well. You can easily sort by name and then go to PowerArchiver ones.

After disabling any of the options, you need to restart explorer.exe from taskmanager (right click> Restart).

Here are the two dialogues that do exactly the same thing AFAICS. One you get by opening PA and then clicking File > New and the other by right-clicking on some files and getting to compress with options. I have been brief, but I hope you will follow what I mean. I much prefer the “file - new” dialogue.

Either way, it does not seem intuitive to have two different dialogues that do the same thing. IMHO there should only be one. Maybe the best of both could be used to create a third design that could be the only one needed?

I had a subsequent problem where the skin somehow became corrupt, with all buttons hidden, and thus rendering PA inaccessible.

For various reasons, I updated to16.00.69 by downloading the entire file, so was able to use this to repair the installation.

When that was complete, PA was restored to normal look (albeit with settings lost) and the delete/refresh problem has been cleared/fixed.

when something like that happens next time, try to save the registry so we can reproduce it here. Same goes for the repair, manually deleting HKCU\Software\PowerArchiverint would have likely reset it all back without need to repair.

It is a shame that it is a full screen mode, it would be more useful if it had the same functionality without resizing (drastically in my case) the main PA window. As it is, the option is useless to me as working full screen takes away the need to hide the ribbon.

This has been fixed in latest update by Norton tonight. This is not our error but issue of false positive from AV vendor. So if you notice it in the future, you can also report it to them for quick fix. Thanks.

Thanks, that did it. I was playing around a few days ago and could have clicked on that button. It is not very clear on the interface whether this option is disabled or not. I think the bubble help should change to indicate the status of the option and also the colour difference between the two states should be more marked. Throughout the interface, the only indication that an option is active/a button has been clicked is a very light grey, which does not stand out at all. In some places it is lighter than others.

No problem. The new Power Archiver version seems very interesting, and I’m doing some test during my free time.

Usually to avoid this when I have to use localized strings in a program I do a check with the longest GUI strings localized. So if fit well the longest, will fit also the others.

I had the same issue with an automatic update going from 16.00.46 to 16.00.56. I found the old installation file and reverted to .46. It was still registered with no action on my part. I sent an email to support with more details, but if you need information from another ‘bad’ system I can supply it if needed.

(Question: Does the registration code change each time you request it? I had looked up the email from December with the registration code and tried that, then requested it again to confirm that I had it correct and it provided a different code.)

yeah, my bad… its single click for toolbar to show temp, and doubleclick to exit the mode - or actually enter it. I think in Win10, this is how Explorer works by default. In PA it is disabled by default and you can enable it as you have found out :-)

I had to remove latest drive emulator and use windows 10 default options to mount ISO…
I then reinstalled Virtual Drivers and the option returned to shell menu but it doesn’t
actually show the option in the shell configurations menu…did you decide to remove it perhaps ?

After I closed PA the ‘mount / unmount’ options have once again disappeared from the shell menu.

PA is overwriting settings that VD is setting. So install VD and then run PA.

We will get them back to config.

when I attempt to extract a subfolder (from a self-extracting executable), strange things happen:

The archive looks like this, in the tree view on the left:

pywin32-219.win-amd64-py3.5.exe [1]

*** adodbapi
*** isapi
*** [etc.]
** SCRIPTS

I want to extract only the contents of the PLATLIB folder, so I select it in the tree view and click “Extract Files”. In the “Extract” dialog, “All files” is selected, “Selected files” is grayed out. None of the five “Options” are selected.

After extracting, I get a folder that looks like this:

adodbapi isapi [etc.] SCRIPTS

PA has extracted the contents of the selected folder as top-level folders in the target, then dropped the other folder from the archive into there as well.

I suppose the correct way to do this is to select the contents of the PLATLIB folder in the right pane first, but if PA works any differently depending on what is selected in the tree view, I think it should not intermix files/folders this way.

This happens with both 2015 and 2016 RC2.

I am a long time user of PA. I primarily use it to decompress audio files to my Windows Home Server based server. This worked fine until I upgraded to Windows 10 on my laptop, but it is now very slow and unreliable. It takes a long time to bring up the folder destination lists and whilst decompressing often hangs up and occasionally crashes all together.
I have tried remapping the destination drives but this doesn’t help.

Anything else I can try?

It seems your network is slower/unreliable after Windows 10 upgrade. This could happen for instance due to bad drivers. Check if you have latest drivers for your network adapter.

Also check network speed - for instance simply copy file in Windows Explorer between two computers, how fast does it go? Does it often stop?

Just to confirm - upgrade process in Windows Installer will not delete your previous settings, it is not supposed to.

Sometimes when we change important parts of PA, there could be old setting that clashes with new PA. We test this usually so for instance default values will always work fine but it is up to us to make sure it works properly, there is not automated way.

In this case with PA 2016, toolbar component is completely new, so it has everything different compared to old one and we manually adjusted settings to match.

Just a heads up, if you print your email containing your PA 2016 registration details to a PDF, open it in PDF XChange Editor and then copy and paste into PA 2016 it will Fail everytime!!!

It has to be done from your browser or some other PDF reader

I’m using a clipboard manager called Ditto in the background which may also be interfering.

it is just a text email - there is nothing fancy about it, pdf editor is likely doing something wrong when it creates PDF.

Ah, so you cant run PAOP and ZTE together… they do the same thing. ZTE is for when you want independent compression for Outlook and shell, without PowerArchiver installed and PAOP is when you already have PA installed.

Yes, SFX Wizard creates a .EXE file that is an ‘extractor’ and also the ‘data’.

Any particular reason why it is not made available for use to the public?. (It is not much different for the SFX Wizard’s .EXE, just not combined)

It is custom code created for Adobe for their specific application needs…

maybe some PA setting for FTP changes, did you send Mili via email your settings? That way he can check with your updated setting to see if it works on his computer… i assume he is testing with ones that work for you :-)

When I click that box to allow it, all starts up again ok, except for those file errors when it was grey.

ok, so you can use vss settings for these files to make sure they are backed up.

It’s too bad that you cannot include PK2.0g but show a warning of its weak and insecure encryption. Now Powerarchiver has no compatibility with Windows 7 Explorer zip folder usage for encrypted zip files. When sending an encrypted zipped file to novice Windows users it was convenient to tell them the password and to have them just open the file with Windows Explorer folder access.

I will stay on the PA (11/2014) version until I figure out what compression software is compatible Windows Explorer encrypted zip folder access.

pk 2.04g encryption is now considered a security flaw. It can easily be broken very quickly by anyone how can search on google.

So if you are sending it to someone, you can send them a link to PA 2015 download, even if they do not purchase it, it will let them extract the file… that way at least encryption is secure.

I dont think MS intends on updating their engine, it is 10 year old these days and company that sold it to them went out of business long time ago.

I made a profile so I can use it both ways.
by default is set to .zip.

if you save your complete settings via the Options>Config dropdown, then your cloud account definitions will be saved as well and you can just run the .reg to apply them.
Or, save them to Cloud and restore them upon registering PowerArchiver using your online code.
