    • Missing virtual driver in Patchbeam

      pirrbe

      PA 2023 22.00.08
Long time no seeing. So I start up the new year with a first problem : the virtual driver cannot be installed. Reason : it is missing in the Fast Ring PatchBeam Update Service…

It seems a standard problem with new releases :-)
Can I have a link or can it be fixed. Thank you. CU later

    • PA 21.00.18 testing via context menu causes extraction of files

      D

When the function for testing archives is invoked via the shell context menu (PowerArchiver > Test) then all the files in the archive get extracted to the current folder.

The test dialog reports as many errors as there are files in the archive but it fails to give any hint as to which files are supposed to be erroneous or what the nature of the problem might be. Comparing the extracted files to the originals shows no differences at all.

The .7z in question was produced with maximised compression settings in 7zip (taking forever but resulting in smaller archives than .7z produced by PowerArchiver with maximised settings). Therefore I wanted to see whether PowerArchiver can at least test .7z that it produced itself. Hence I had PowerArchiver convert a .pa with the same contents to .7z. There weren’t any errors reported but the resulting .7z contained fewer than half of the files contained in the .pa (137 of 366), so I scratched that test.

Performance is abysmal when testing via the context menu (e.g. almost 2 minutes for testing a .7z that 7zip tests in 4 seconds), but that is most likely due to the fact that the extracted files are written to disk. Testing the same .7z in the PowerArchiver GUI takes only 8 seconds but causes the mysterious appearance of a UAC dialog, as reported elsewhere.

The testing function is vital because PowerArchiver has a history of producing archives that it cannot unpack without errors or that do not conform to the respective file format standards (e.g. ZIP) so that other programs report them as erroneous.

The point of creating archives is that the files in them will most likely have to be extracted at some point. If the extraction cannot be guaranteed to produce correct results then the whole program is absolutely pointless. Actually, worse than pointless - it causes data loss and hence damage.

    • Start PowerArchiver 2023 Starter when my computer starts

      Brian Gregory

In PowerArchiver 2023 22.00.06 configuration, the option labelled “Start PowerArchiver 2023 Starter when my computer starts” seems to be redundant.

I am only allowed to change this option when PA Starter is disabled, and then it seems to be ignored.

When I enable PA Starter this option is forced to the enabled state.

I think it’d be good to remove “Start PowerArchiver 2023 Starter when my computer starts” completely. I’ve always found it confusing having both options.

Added later: However i don’t particularly want to use queue but I do like having the PAStarter icon in my tray area.

    • Testing .pa archives

      PA_Fan

      W10 Pro 22H2 - 64 -bit

      PA 22.00.06 (PA 2023)

It has been the case with previous versions of PowerArchiver, but I had hoped that the latest might behave differently. Not so, I’m afraid.

I have, for various obscure reasons, created a few .pa archives, mainly in the hope that they will save me some more space. From time to time, I use the “Test” option to check that important archives are OK and uncorrupted.

With every .pa archive I’ve tested, the process runs through OK but then reports that there are errors. This is always the number of files in the archive e.g. if 11 files, then 11 errors reported.

      In the .pa, I can:-

preview the files (usually PDF) extract some or all files and look at or use them convert the .pa to a .zip or .zipx archive, which then works fine and tests without errors

Is it the case that the Test routine isn’t designed for .pa archives, or is there another reason? Although the .pa seems to function properly, despite the test reporting errors, I would like to be sure that every .pa is OK and not “broken”.

Some of the .pas are quite old and produced with earlier PA versions (they are truly “archives”). If I extract all the files in the old .pa, create a new, fresh .pa and add back the files to that, then test the new, no errors (at least in the .pa I’ve tried this on) are reported. This would suggest a mismatch between old .pas and newer versions of PA itself.

    • PA 21.00.18 Action / Test behaves oddly for me on .PA files

      Brian Gregory

PA 21.00.18 running on Windows 7 64 bit.
I made a big .PA file and thought I’d check it was made correctly with Menu / Actions / Test.
      Discovered:
      a) PA always issues a UAC prompt to do this!
      b) PA always says there are many errors in PA files.

    • Functions in Windows 11 context menu no longer work after last Windows Update

      T

For some reason, the PowerArchiver functions in the Windows 11 context menu no longer work after the last Windows Update. Only the functions in the classic context menu function as they should.

I’ve tried uninstalling PowerArchiver and using RevoUninstaller to remove all bits and pieces that were left behind and did a clean install of PowerArchiver, it didn’t fix the issue. Other items in the Windows 11 context menu work.

I’ve been getting sporadic but persistent messages about my zip archives being read only and getting this message -

“The zip files are read only. Would you like to unlock files for use?”

This is happening very recently and I don’t know what’s causing this problem.

I’m using PowerArchiver 2010 .61 version. Can you guys please fix this or if not…send me a private build that fixes this?

I first noted this issue a few days ago whenever downloading zip files from the XYplorer Beta forum for updating my file manager.

      Thanks.

Not seen this myself - so obvious questions …
        Are you sure:-
        a) the Zip file is not marked as Read Only?
        b) the folder containing the Zip is not Read Only?

Also which Windows version do you have ?
Your exact PA version? (11.61.07 is “latest”).

… downloading zip files from the XYplorer Beta forum…

Tried to check but appears to be members only access.

If 11.61.07 is the “latest”…how come I don’t have this?! I only have 11.61.06! Please send me the link. When I do an upgrade check…I keep getting that 61.06 is the “latest”. So getting the new beta might help quite a bit thank you very much.

I have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (never getting Service Pack 3, sorry). The zip files are not marked as Read Only. I’ve never had this problem before. It started on December 30th. There’s no particular reason why this should happen…I haven’t done ANYTHING to my computer to cause this. I did a virus check…nothing.

About the XYplorer beta site…yeah - it’s for registered users. But you can download the beta for free to “test” it.

Okay…I seem to have received a link to the latest beta…because I don’t see this reflected on the download page. Mine now says my installed version is the 11.61.07 version. The one on the download page only says its for the 61 version? And it’s from Dec 3rd…which is the older version I believe.

In any case I’m going to test this on some zip archives once I get a new beta release for XYplorer and see if I still get the read only error message. I never got the read only error message before. I notified the admin of the XYplorer site and I was told he didn’t change anything which might account for this.

Just downloaded a new zip file and I’m still getting the read only warning. I don’t know why I’m getting this message. It’s something I’ve never seen before when opening archives. Is there a setting in Powar Archiver that can AUTOMATICALLY convert read only zip files so I don’t see this message?

PS. I had a chance to save the file using the Save Link As option since PowerArchiver is the default application to open zip file format. Once I saved the archive…I opened it up in Winzip 11.

I didn’t get the Read Only warning in Winzip. It was able to open the zip file with no warning about the files in the archive in read only. So my preliminary conclusion is you have a problem with PowerArchiver getting confused about the read/write status of files in archives.

              Please fix.

if you use open instead of save in your web browser, file is sent to the temp folder and deleted afterwards… this is probably what the message is all about. What browser do you use?

Well, if it was a general PA problem I think we would all see it (and be able to reproduce it).
How are you opening the ZIP with PA -
using windows explorer - right click shell menu?
using windows explorer and “double clicking” the filename?
                  from within PA itself?

                  @Hagen:

Is the problem only with these XYplorer zips?
Or is the problem with any downloaded zip files?

Quick test - Do you see the problem with “Tutor.zip” (in PowerArchiver folder) or with “Example.zip” from the WinZip folder?

No, such an option could be considered a security risk.

                  @Hagen:

I didn’t get the Read Only warning in Winzip. It was able to open the zip file with no warning about the files in the archive in read only.

After opening with Winzip; close Winzip and then try PowerArchiver on the same file, do you still get the warning?
If so, we “know” it is not (for example) a browser/anti-virus file locking problem.

P.S. Is the problem reported for the ZIP file itself or for a file within the ZIP file? In other words, when just trying to view contents or when trying to extract the contents or … ?

I reopened the same file after I closed Winzip and used a different browser - namely Opera. When it launches Power Archiver I don’t get the read only error message. So it appears to be a Firefox plug in that’s causing this. I can’t for the life of me know which one is doing this.

Sorry - are you using an Internet browser to load files from your hard disk or are you downloading the file again?
Either case could be the browser “locking” the file.

I suppose you mean extension (not plugin); quick check by starting Firefox(Safety Mode) which disables all extensions - not Windows safety mode!

He is using Open instead of Save As when downloading files via Firefox.

What this does is saves file to the temp folder, and it is automatically deleted later on when system needs more space.

I am pretty sure this has a lot to do with it!

Spwolf, that was my first thought - but then he said

And I was trying to find out if he got the message when opening that same file (from his hard drive) and not a new download.
                          But then
                          @Hagen:

I reopened the same file after I closed Winzip and used a different browser

So now I am confised - unless he downloaded again and didn’t try to open the saved file as I was asking.
