Strange error - opening zip files causing Read Only message
-
Just downloaded a new zip file and I’m still getting the read only warning. I don’t know why I’m getting this message. It’s something I’ve never seen before when opening archives. Is there a setting in Powar Archiver that can AUTOMATICALLY convert read only zip files so I don’t see this message?
PS. I had a chance to save the file using the Save Link As option since PowerArchiver is the default application to open zip file format. Once I saved the archive…I opened it up in Winzip 11.
I didn’t get the Read Only warning in Winzip. It was able to open the zip file with no warning about the files in the archive in read only. So my preliminary conclusion is you have a problem with PowerArchiver getting confused about the read/write status of files in archives.
Please fix.

if you use open instead of save in your web browser, file is sent to the temp folder and deleted afterwards… this is probably what the message is all about. What browser do you use?

Well, if it was a general PA problem I think we would all see it (and be able to reproduce it).
How are you opening the ZIP with PA -
using windows explorer - right click shell menu?
using windows explorer and “double clicking” the filename?
from within PA itself?Just downloaded a new zip file and I’m still getting the read only warning. I don’t know why I’m getting this message. It’s something I’ve never seen before when opening archives.
Is the problem only with these XYplorer zips?
Or is the problem with any downloaded zip files?Quick test - Do you see the problem with “Tutor.zip” (in PowerArchiver folder) or with “Example.zip” from the WinZip folder?
Is there a setting in Powar Archiver that can AUTOMATICALLY convert read only zip files so I don’t see this message?
No, such an option could be considered a security risk.
I didn’t get the Read Only warning in Winzip. It was able to open the zip file with no warning about the files in the archive in read only.
After opening with Winzip; close Winzip and then try PowerArchiver on the same file, do you still get the warning?
If so, we “know” it is not (for example) a browser/anti-virus file locking problem.P.S. Is the problem reported for the ZIP file itself or for a file within the ZIP file? In other words, when just trying to view contents or when trying to extract the contents or … ?

I reopened the same file after I closed Winzip and used a different browser - namely Opera. When it launches Power Archiver I don’t get the read only error message. So it appears to be a Firefox plug in that’s causing this. I can’t for the life of me know which one is doing this.

Sorry - are you using an Internet browser to load files from your hard disk or are you downloading the file again?
Either case could be the browser “locking” the file.

I suppose you mean extension (not plugin); quick check by starting Firefox(Safety Mode) which disables all extensions - not Windows safety mode!

He is using Open instead of Save As when downloading files via Firefox.
What this does is saves file to the temp folder, and it is automatically deleted later on when system needs more space.
I am pretty sure this has a lot to do with it!

Spwolf, that was my first thought - but then he said
@Hagen:I had a chance to save the file using the Save Link As option since PowerArchiver is the default application to open zip file format. Once I saved the archive…I opened it up in Winzip 11.
I didn’t get the Read Only warning in Winzip.
And I was trying to find out if he got the message when opening that same file (from his hard drive) and not a new download.
But then
@Hagen:I reopened the same file after I closed Winzip and used a different browser
So now I am confised - unless he downloaded again and didn’t try to open the saved file as I was asking.
-
he used Save as and it worked ;-). When he uses Open, it sets read only on it ;-).
-
Is there some way to disable the read-only notice?
-
Options> Config> Misc> Disable read-only warning.

Thank you! I tried find it from options but clearly I wasn’t just looking hard enough.
