7-zip problems AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN…..
-
On the assumption that there is no “fault” in PA’s compression, that leaves us with the “files in use” problem.
Having been reminded by Charles, it is possible that the problem you are seeing is caused by a “third party” utility which is preventing PA accessing the files. This is usually (but not exclusively) an “anti-virus” or similar.
When PA accesses the file for compressing, this access is prevented because another utility is accessing the file. The “files in use” problem is that PA will not add the file to the archive AND does not give any warning that this file has been skipped.
There are a few threads on this topic - e.g. this thread in the WishList
http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=900Actually no - 7zip will add files in use. It is ZIP format that does not (but still it gives error that files are in use, with list of files not compressed).
You can try it out by playing an mp3 file lets say and then trying compression with different formats.

Yes. Here is just to say again that I hope this could be fixed soon. The different behavior which PA performs in different archive format is very annoying.

I had read the thread and as no-one mentioned specific formats, I thought it was a general “problem”. Thanks for the update/correction.

This guy is very rude!!
I hope you were not referring to me, if so I assure you it was unintentional. :o
If you are referring to some of the comments by Handsomeguy, then I recommend you ignore them and/or put it down to frustration. Please do not respond in kind and start a “flame war”.
If that happens, the thread will just be locked and nobody wins.
@Shivan:You guys should just ignore him!
He has already said that he felt ignored and that it only increased the frustration when he was trying to report a problem and get it fixed.

When I tried to compress 150 PSD file of about 30 Megabytes each. It wold go through the compressing stage, but when it finish is said it could not find the directory. When I put only 30 of these PSD files into a zip file it worked ok. This was with Beta 1 of 9.5 I have not tried it with Beta 2
Windows XP SP2
I suggest you try again with PA 9.5 Beta 3.
I don’t have any PSD files so just downloaded 5 examples from http://www.elated.com
Didn’t see your problem, but these were a lot smaller (200k - 2MB) and anyway only 5 files doesn’t mean much.If your problem still exists I would start a new thread.
-
Unfortunately, real life has intervened.
I will not be able to follow up on this thread until next week.If another “regular tester” is willing, could I ask you to follow up on any further posts from Handsomeguy - concentrating on identifying the problem and not on starting a “flame war”. If you do try but find that you are put off by any abuse, just ignore the thread and I will follow up next week.

Please monitor and delete any spurious/off-topic posts in preference to locking the thread. If there is a problem I want to find it. -

http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=900NO, the files are NOT is use at all. I don’t have any active anti-virus or spyware utlilty running. Besides, these apps only run when I manually start them, such as X-Stup Pro 3.1.
So that theory is not correct. -
This guy is very rude!!
I’ve never had much problems with PA - if there was a problem, it would be fixed!
You guys should just ignore him!
Keep up the great work!
Man, ur supposed 2 b an alpha tester, and yet you can’t find these problems. If u did ur job properly without worrying about ignoring ppl or who’s being “rude”, then these friggin problems wouldn’t exist in the 1st damn place.
Secondly, “if there was a problem”. Geez man, get off ur rocker. I wouldn’t waste my time on here trying to explain the problem and baggin PA if there was no problem. I have said so many times, but I quite liked PA when it was 1st released. So get ur facts right before u open ur hole.
As for the other administrator dudes hanging with me trying to nut out the problem, I appreciate it. I am NOT trying to be rude, but its just VERY frustrating how it seems I’m the only one with this CONSTANT and CONSISTANT problem.
-
No TBGBe, I wasn’t refering to you, it was HandsomeGuy.
Yep, I am an alpha tester, and I have not encountered this problem. 7-ZIP works 100% fine for me.
If I do find bugs, I report it.I also get frustrated sometimes, but I don’t use that type of language.
If you knew how challenging programming can be sometimes, then you would understand what “frustration” means. The bug report is appreciated, but your attitude was not right, that’s all.
End of discussion of this “rudeness” topic.

all this energy wasted could have gone into more detailed bug report :-).
-
You’re right, spwolf!
Sorry… -
Since this problem has been reported, I have been trying to reproduce it on two different machines without any success. I have been able to reproduce a crash when canceling the 7-zip file compression on large files (400MB+ with over 500+ files/folders). Hitting the cancel button has caused PA to stop responding everytime. I let PA set there for just over 20 minutes and PA never did start responding, just hung on canceling.
But back to the original problem of missing folders, so far no luck, all the files I have created have been fine. Wish I could of been more help.
-
I just did a quick test right now.
I went to the X-Setup Pro folder and selected all the files and folders and right click and selected to compress to 7z. I then did the same using WinRAR. I then compared what showed up by opening then both in WinRAR.
Two folders were missing from the PA created 7z. These folders were Plugins and Wizards, and when I checked, these folders were both blank.
You guys try it and let me know if you get the same thing.
This is still a problem, as what if these blank folders are needed and PA doesn’t recreate them? Can this problem PLEASE be fixed for the next beta? I don’t want to see anything missing, no matter how insignificant PA deems it. I chose what to compress, and hence it should ALL be there.
This is only one thing at the moment. I will try other things are I get more time.
PS: Can I pls get a registration code for PA 2006, as I’m willing to provide my services as a beta tester for it.
Thanks.
-
We fixed the problems with saving path, and now working on saving/restoring empry folders. All those things should be for BETA 4.

The beta versions are released for public testing. You do not need a registration code to contribute to beta testing - just post here in the forums when you find problems.
Actually, it is useful if some “beta testers” are unregistered, just to verify that there are no errors introduced which only affects them.
PS
:D if you really want a registration code http://www.conexware.com/order.html :D -
Yeah, gee thanks. We can’t even get 1 code for helping testing.

We are all helping to make the code better. PA is a small company that is trying to provide a good rpoduct and working hard to make it affordable for home users. Along with this, they have always been very responsive with their support. I for one think that your attitude stinks and I’m tired of listening to you trash PA and complain because you can’t get something for free. If you don’t like the program, quit using it. If you want to help improve the product, offer insightful suggestions and detialed descriptions. IF you want something for free, go find an open source program. If you want to get paid, apply for a job and prove your worth.
Last time I will be replying to any of handsomeguys comments.

easy…
:-)
From beta 4, empty folders are added to the 7zip archives.

Great. Thanks a lot. I can’t wait to give it a try. When will beta 4 be out? Also, what other changes does it contain?
