    End of Powerarchiver

    Windows 11 Shell Extension crash
    W
Copied the Take Command shortcut, changed Target to be wt.exe -p “Take Command” and saved it. Right-clicked to get to properties and Explorer crashed. (wt.exe is the Microsoft Terminal program, which I have installed from the Microsoft Store.) The Target path had changed to: C:\Users{username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe -p “Take Command” Created a new shortcut in a Start Menu folder and set the command line to the same, and it crashed the same. Created a new shortcut and set the command line to mspaint.exe (also a Windows Store app) and Explorer crashed on right-click on the shortcut. It appears PowerArchiver shell extensions doesn’t handle Windows Store apps in shortcuts properly. Perhaps it needs better defensive coding around checking the Target of shortcuts, or just ignoring shortcuts altogether. Running PA 22.00.11 on Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.6584

Was Power Archiver affected by the WinRAR/.rar vulnerability discovered by ESET researchers recently? Not sure if PA is using their libraries for extraction.

Ultimate zip was made by powerarchiver
    D
From google search AI Overview Yes, that’s correct. UltimateZip was indeed a product of the same company that developed PowerArchiver, and it was essentially a rebranded version of PowerArchiver. It was discontinued and replaced by PowerArchiver.

    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT
Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D
Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 . The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg I know it has non standard quotes in it. However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip. Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it. Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver. When will a fix be implemented?

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB
I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023. PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more. I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result. This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

i have tested with 7zip file manager and can not get the same results reported as a fault. What exactly is the fault?

The results produced were the same as powerarchiver, but were displayed differently on winrar. but essentially they were the same.

      This there something bi’m missing?

HandsomeGuy has now said that the problem does not occur in 7-Zip, only in PA using 7z compression.

The references to WinRAR are just confusing things as that cannot perform 7z compression. So I basically ignore them (along with the poor attitude). I do not want to get into fruitless arguments and name calling.

The current problem I’m concerned about is that when compressing “thousands of files and folders”, using 7z format via explorer shell menu, the archive file created is missing some Files and Folder(s).

He also mentioned setting options (Ultra & Solid) so I suppose it was actually via “compress with options” and not “compress to xxx.7z” - but even that is still not clear.

At one point he reported the created archive was missing one folder then later folder(s) and 3 to 5 files. No idea if any or all of the files were in the missing folder(s) or not. Nor has he said how he determined that they were missing in the first place. Apparently, he then deleted the archive so cannot refer to it for more info.

Other than that, he’s told us nothing that enables reproducing the fault.
That’s why I asked for a detailed description of a new compression attempt - although he has also indicated that he may just “give up”.

We just have to wait and see if there is a reproducible problem.

If ur such a PA genious, u’d know that you can change the default PA 7-zip compression options, and once set, you can then right click and choose compress to xxxx.7z. That is what I’m doing.
Also, I KNOW the files, folders are missing because when I have uncompressed them and then selected them all and gone to properties menu, I get some figures on Windows Explorer. Then I go to the original files and do the exact same thing, and the figures are different. Why? Where have the rest of the files/folders gone?
Also, the “attitude” u describe is natural, as it happens so easily for me, and yet you have a hard time beleived me or replicating the problem.

I only said that I was a user not a genius, but if you check you will see that I asked if you use “Compression Profiles” in my description request. You had not mentioned them previously.

OK, that’s first time you have actually mentioned that you are uncompressing the archive, up until now it is possible that you were checking archive properties or using explorer view or some other method and that the problem was in that display. But still you haven’t answered the question previously asked by spwolf and myself - how are you uncompressing?
            @HandsomeGuy:

Also, the “attitude” u describe is natural, as it happens so easily for me…

It may be natural the first time time you report a problem. It is not (or at least it should not) be continued when you start getting responses asking for more details.
            @HandsomeGuy:

… and yet you have a hard time beleived me or replicating the problem.

I do not think I have ever said that I do not believe you. But - yes, I have repeatedly said I cannot replicate the problem. So have other people.
You will note the length of this thread and you are still providing “bits” of information not previously mentioned.

If it is not possible to reproduce the problem, it is highly unlikely that the developers will be able to find and then fix it. So again, is that a “no” as far as providing the full description in one place is concerned?

I am decompressing by using PA to open the 7z file and then extracting that way.

On the assumption that there is no “fault” in PA’s compression, that leaves us with the “files in use” problem.
Having been reminded by Charles, it is possible that the problem you are seeing is caused by a “third party” utility which is preventing PA accessing the files.

This is usually (but not exclusively) an “anti-virus” or similar.
When PA accesses the file for compressing, this access is prevented because another utility is accessing the file.

The “files in use” problem is that PA will not add the file to the archive AND does not give any warning that this file has been skipped.

There are a few threads on this topic - e.g. this thread in the WishList

Actually no - 7zip will add files in use. It is ZIP format that does not (but still it gives error that files are in use, with list of files not compressed).

You can try it out by playing an mp3 file lets say and then trying compression with different formats.

Yes. Here is just to say again that I hope this could be fixed soon. The different behavior which PA performs in different archive format is very annoying.

When I tried to compress 150 PSD file of about 30 Megabytes each. It wold go through the compressing stage, but when it finish is said it could not find the directory. When I put only 30 of these PSD files into a zip file it worked ok. This was with Beta 1 of 9.5 I have not tried it with Beta 2

I suggest you try again with PA 9.5 Beta 3.
I don’t have any PSD files so just downloaded 5 examples from http://www.elated.com
Didn’t see your problem, but these were a lot smaller (200k - 2MB) and anyway only 5 files doesn’t mean much.

If your problem still exists I would start a new thread.

                                  http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=900

NO, the files are NOT is use at all. I don’t have any active anti-virus or spyware utlilty running. Besides, these apps only run when I manually start them, such as X-Stup Pro 3.1.
So that theory is not correct.

                                    @Shivan:

                                    This guy is very rude!!

I’ve never had much problems with PA - if there was a problem, it would be fixed!

You guys should just ignore him!

                                    Keep up the great work!

Man, ur supposed 2 b an alpha tester, and yet you can’t find these problems. If u did ur job properly without worrying about ignoring ppl or who’s being “rude”, then these friggin problems wouldn’t exist in the 1st damn place.

Secondly, “if there was a problem”. Geez man, get off ur rocker. I wouldn’t waste my time on here trying to explain the problem and baggin PA if there was no problem. I have said so many times, but I quite liked PA when it was 1st released. So get ur facts right before u open ur hole.

As for the other administrator dudes hanging with me trying to nut out the problem, I appreciate it. I am NOT trying to be rude, but its just VERY frustrating how it seems I’m the only one with this CONSTANT and CONSISTANT problem.

No TBGBe, I wasn’t refering to you, it was HandsomeGuy.

Yep, I am an alpha tester, and I have not encountered this problem. 7-ZIP works 100% fine for me.
If I do find bugs, I report it.

I also get frustrated sometimes, but I don’t use that type of language.
If you knew how challenging programming can be sometimes, then you would understand what “frustration” means.

The bug report is appreciated, but your attitude was not right, that’s all.

End of discussion of this “rudeness” topic.

Since this problem has been reported, I have been trying to reproduce it on two different machines without any success. I have been able to reproduce a crash when canceling the 7-zip file compression on large files (400MB+ with over 500+ files/folders). Hitting the cancel button has caused PA to stop responding everytime. I let PA set there for just over 20 minutes and PA never did start responding, just hung on canceling.

But back to the original problem of missing folders, so far no luck, all the files I have created have been fine. Wish I could of been more help.
