    Windows 11 Shell Extension crash
    W
    Copied the Take Command shortcut, changed Target to be wt.exe -p “Take Command” and saved it. Right-clicked to get to properties and Explorer crashed. (wt.exe is the Microsoft Terminal program, which I have installed from the Microsoft Store.) The Target path had changed to: C:\Users{username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe -p “Take Command” Created a new shortcut in a Start Menu folder and set the command line to the same, and it crashed the same. Created a new shortcut and set the command line to mspaint.exe (also a Windows Store app) and Explorer crashed on right-click on the shortcut. It appears PowerArchiver shell extensions doesn’t handle Windows Store apps in shortcuts properly. Perhaps it needs better defensive coding around checking the Target of shortcuts, or just ignoring shortcuts altogether. Running PA 22.00.11 on Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.6584

    Was Power Archiver affected by the WinRAR/.rar vulnerability discovered by ESET researchers recently? Not sure if PA is using their libraries for extraction.

    Ultimate zip was made by powerarchiver
    D
    From google search AI Overview Yes, that’s correct. UltimateZip was indeed a product of the same company that developed PowerArchiver, and it was essentially a rebranded version of PowerArchiver. It was discontinued and replaced by PowerArchiver.

    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT
    Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

    Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D
    Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 . The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg I know it has non standard quotes in it. However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip. Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it. Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver. When will a fix be implemented?

    PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB
    I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023. PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more. I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result. This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

      Well, where can I begin…

      I have my 7-zip at the default settings, except that I have enabled Solid Archives and Ultra memory compression settings.

      I tried to compress X-Setup Pro 7.1 which contains 10 folders and 1,051 files totalling 11.9MB.

      Also, XBMC which contains 11 folders and 1,352 files totalling 152MB.

      Now what really gets to me is how easy this problem has been happening for me and a few others, yet PA “testers” cannot get those problems.

      Like I said, don’t bother fixing it, I have given up really. PA was good before, but now with WinRAR so much more rleiable and faster, who needs the crappy unstable PA anyways. And to think I really liked PA once.

      Maybe the 7-zip feature zupport should be removed altogether.

        @TBGBe:

        Just a thought - could it be that the “missing folder” in the archive was empty (no files or also only empty sub-folders)?
        There was a problem with this particular situation but I cannot remember if it was 7z or another format.

        Even if a folder is empty, i expect it to be compressed if I have selected it. This isn’t a feature, this is a damn stupid bug.

            OK, I don’t know so did a Google for “XBMC”
            Result -> http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/
            Went to the Downloads page and selected:-
            (Source Files) XBMC_src-v1.1.0.rar
            Size : 67,136,925

            With PA 9.5(beta3) installed:

            Explorer Shell - PowerArchiver->Extract to folder XBMC_src-v1.1.0

            Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.0 Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 527 Folders
            Now I realise this is not what you were trying to report, but still I’ve got this far…

            Explorer Shell - Folder - PowerArchiver->Compress with Options…

            Format : 7z
            Add Files
            Active Options :: Ultra, Include System & Hidden Files, Solid

            This gave me XBMC_src-v1.1.0.7z
            Size : 58,394,962 :D

            Again Explorer Shell - PowerArchiver->Extract to … > XBMC_src-v1.1.7z

            Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.7z Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 527 Folders

            So I’m back to
            @TBGBe:

            I have tried - but obviously something was different to way the reporter is using PA.

              Read the top of the post man.
              But basically, i’m losing folders/files that are shown up once you open the 7-zip archive to the contents I compressed. So in other words, what i’m compressing contails 111 folders and 1500 files, the 7-zip file shows there are 1495 files and 108 folders.

                :confused:

                Well, there is something very wrong here, because whenever I do that same step, I lose files/folders during compression.
                Also, I don’t right click and select “extract to”, i open the file in PA and extract that way. But I still rightclick and compress files to 7-zip. I have 1GB of memory, so I doubt its memory related, even though I know 7-zip is a very big system hog.

                Are there other programs apart from 7-zip and PA that has full support for 7-zip files?

                  I have to ask questions, trying to determine what is actually happening. It went from 1 folder missing, to 3 folders and 5 files. Do you know what were these folders & files, anything specific about them?

                  It really has absolutly nothing to do with bug report you have linked in your first post, since that has been fixed.

                  For Terry’s post, I checked on empty folders and indeed PA does not save empty folders for 7zip. This is something we can add/fix in the next release.

                  Only way we can see and find these things is if people ask questions and try to reproduce it.

                  We are thankful for any kind of bug report, since anything will show us some error, but more info you give, it will be fixed sooner and easier.

                  thanks,

                    How are you selecting these files? Are you selecting files/folder inside the folder or just an original folder? Is “normal relative path” option in config enabled?

                    Did you actually try extracting the files to the hard drive and comparing them?

                    thanks!

                      No, I don’t know anything about the folders concerned. I can’t be bothered looking at whats missing or why. I just know that some files/folders are missing and I delete the 7-zip archive and use WinRAR instead.

                        OK, using the XBMC_src-v1.1.0.7z I created above…

                        Double click to open in PA.
                        Toolbar extract button -
                        Enter Foldername XBMC_src-v1.1.7z

                        Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.7z Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 527 Folders

                        Click on XBMC_src-v1.1.0 and drag onto explorer window
                        Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.0 Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 526 Folders

                        However - this is correct because, of course, the main folder “XBMC_src-v1.1.0” is not included!

                          No, this is not where I was losing files/folders as I never compress from the top folder. I always compress the same way I do in ALL programs, including PA and WinRAR. Its not an error on my part people, i’m not a novice with computers and compression programs. Its not my 1st cup of tea.

                            @HandsomeGuy:

                            Well, there is something very wrong here, because whenever I do that same step, I lose files/folders during compression.

                            @HandsomeGuy:

                            No, this is not where I was losing files/folders as I never compress from the top folder.

                            Now I am completely lost! Both statements cannot be correct.

                            I’m back to

                            I have tried - but obviously something’s different to way {you are} using PA.

                                  Man, I am NOT a damn reseller of any software. I really don’t care if people use PA or WinRAR or Winzip or whatever else. I only moved to WinRAR because of problems with 7-zip. I even said I always liked PA, but these 7-zip problems have been a real pain in the ass and I’ve had enough of it not being fixed. But hey, if thinking I am a WinRAR seller turns you on, then enjoy it man.

                                    I have always had troubles with 7-zip with PA.
                                    …
                                    but these 7-zip problems have been a real pain in the ass and I’ve had enough of it not being fixed.

                                    Are you saying that you have the same “problems” both when using the 7-Zip utility itself and when using 7z format in PA?
                                    If so, then assuming you are using current versions of both, it is not the “empty folders” problem - that is only in PA. At first I was thinking it was the “files in use” problem, but you say you did the same as me using XBMC_src-v1.1.0 - so it cannot be that either.

                                    If you really do wish to have the problem fixed, then since spywolf, davidsplash and myself can not reproduce it, I would ask that you give a lot more details.

                                    1. Use a specific example that we can also access (the Source Files XBMC_src-v1.1.0.rar I linked to will do if you do not have a smaller example).
                                    2. In PA, what options are active under “Configuration - Miscellaneous”.
                                    3. Describe step by step how you are compressing. Include PA viewstyle etc if within PA or which option if using Explorer shell (if you are not using “Compress with options…” then also describe which Compression Profiles are in PA).
                                    4. Describe step by step how you identify that files/folders are missing.
                                    5. Please make the effort to identify what is missing (at least which folders if not specific filenames).

                                    Note: it may be an inherent problem in the 7z compression itself - but spywolf is able to identify that and pass the information on if needed.

                                          i have tested with 7zip file manager and can not get the same results reported as a fault. What exactly is the fault?

                                          The results produced were the same as powerarchiver, but were displayed differently on winrar. but essentially they were the same.

                                          This there something bi’m missing?

                                            HandsomeGuy has now said that the problem does not occur in 7-Zip, only in PA using 7z compression.

                                            The references to WinRAR are just confusing things as that cannot perform 7z compression. So I basically ignore them (along with the poor attitude). I do not want to get into fruitless arguments and name calling.

                                            The current problem I’m concerned about is that when compressing “thousands of files and folders”, using 7z format via explorer shell menu, the archive file created is missing some Files and Folder(s).

                                            He also mentioned setting options (Ultra & Solid) so I suppose it was actually via “compress with options” and not “compress to xxx.7z” - but even that is still not clear.

                                            At one point he reported the created archive was missing one folder then later folder(s) and 3 to 5 files. No idea if any or all of the files were in the missing folder(s) or not. Nor has he said how he determined that they were missing in the first place. Apparently, he then deleted the archive so cannot refer to it for more info.

                                            Other than that, he’s told us nothing that enables reproducing the fault.
                                            That’s why I asked for a detailed description of a new compression attempt - although he has also indicated that he may just “give up”.

                                            We just have to wait and see if there is a reproducible problem.
