7-zip problems AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN…..
-
Read the top of the post man.
But basically, i’m losing folders/files that are shown up once you open the 7-zip archive to the contents I compressed. So in other words, what i’m compressing contails 111 folders and 1500 files, the 7-zip file shows there are 1495 files and 108 folders.I have to ask questions, trying to determine what is actually happening. It went from 1 folder missing, to 3 folders and 5 files. Do you know what were these folders & files, anything specific about them?
It really has absolutly nothing to do with bug report you have linked in your first post, since that has been fixed.
For Terry’s post, I checked on empty folders and indeed PA does not save empty folders for 7zip. This is something we can add/fix in the next release.
Only way we can see and find these things is if people ask questions and try to reproduce it.
We are thankful for any kind of bug report, since anything will show us some error, but more info you give, it will be fixed sooner and easier.
thanks,

Well, there is something very wrong here, because whenever I do that same step, I lose files/folders during compression.
Also, I don’t right click and select “extract to”, i open the file in PA and extract that way. But I still rightclick and compress files to 7-zip. I have 1GB of memory, so I doubt its memory related, even though I know 7-zip is a very big system hog.Are there other programs apart from 7-zip and PA that has full support for 7-zip files?
How are you selecting these files? Are you selecting files/folder inside the folder or just an original folder? Is “normal relative path” option in config enabled?
Did you actually try extracting the files to the hard drive and comparing them?
thanks!

No, I don’t know anything about the folders concerned. I can’t be bothered looking at whats missing or why. I just know that some files/folders are missing and I delete the 7-zip archive and use WinRAR instead.
I don’t know what other info I can give to help you guys.

OK, using the XBMC_src-v1.1.0.7z I created above…
Double click to open in PA.
Toolbar extract button -
Enter Foldername XBMC_src-v1.1.7zFolder XBMC_src-v1.1.7z Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 527 Folders
Menu : Actions ->Extract
Enter Foldername XBMC_src-v1.1.7z2Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.7z2 Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 527 Folders
Switch PA to Explorer View
Status shows 5759 Files :: 527 Folders
Click on XBMC_src-v1.1.0 and drag onto explorer window
Folder XBMC_src-v1.1.0 Size: 194,504,076 :: 5759 Files :: 526 FoldersHowever - this is correct because, of course, the main folder “XBMC_src-v1.1.0” is not included!
Is this where you believe you were “losing” one folder? -

Is this where you believe you were “losing” one folder? No, this is not where I was losing files/folders as I never compress from the top folder. I always compress the same way I do in ALL programs, including PA and WinRAR. Its not an error on my part people, i’m not a novice with computers and compression programs. Its not my 1st cup of tea.

Now I am completely lost! Both statements cannot be correct.
I’m back to
@TBGBe:I have tried - but obviously something’s different to way {you are} using PA.

sounds like this guy is a reseller of winrar as i have followed his stepps and can not reproduce it on either a windows 2000 machine or a windows 98

Man, I am NOT a damn reseller of any software. I really don’t care if people use PA or WinRAR or Winzip or whatever else. I only moved to WinRAR because of problems with 7-zip. I even said I always liked PA, but these 7-zip problems have been a real pain in the ass and I’ve had enough of it not being fixed. But hey, if thinking I am a WinRAR seller turns you on, then enjoy it man.

Sorry I missed something…
@HandsomeGuy:I have always had troubles with 7-zip with PA.
…
but these 7-zip problems have been a real pain in the ass and I’ve had enough of it not being fixed. Are you saying that you have the same “problems” both when using the 7-Zip utility itself and when using 7z format in PA?
If so, then assuming you are using current versions of both, it is not the “empty folders” problem - that is only in PA. At first I was thinking it was the “files in use” problem, but you say you did the same as me using XBMC_src-v1.1.0 - so it cannot be that either. If you really do wish to have the problem fixed, then since spywolf, davidsplash and myself can not reproduce it, I would ask that you give a lot more details.
- Use a specific example that we can also access (the Source Files XBMC_src-v1.1.0.rar I linked to will do if you do not have a smaller example).
- In PA, what options are active under “Configuration - Miscellaneous”.
- Describe step by step how you are compressing. Include PA viewstyle etc if within PA or which option if using Explorer shell (if you are not using “Compress with options…” then also describe which Compression Profiles are in PA).
- Describe step by step how you identify that files/folders are missing.
- Please make the effort to identify what is missing (at least which folders if not specific filenames).
Note: it may be an inherent problem in the 7z compression itself - but spywolf is able to identify that and pass the information on if needed.

No, the problems do NOT occuer in 7-zip File Manager, only PA.

OK. You already said it isn’t the “empty folders” problem anyway.
Are you willing to provide the full description I asked for? -
i have tested with 7zip file manager and can not get the same results reported as a fault. What exactly is the fault?
The results produced were the same as powerarchiver, but were displayed differently on winrar. but essentially they were the same.
This there something bi’m missing?

HandsomeGuy has now said that the problem does not occur in 7-Zip, only in PA using 7z compression.
The references to WinRAR are just confusing things as that cannot perform 7z compression. So I basically ignore them (along with the poor attitude). I do not want to get into fruitless arguments and name calling.
The current problem I’m concerned about is that when compressing “thousands of files and folders”, using 7z format via explorer shell menu, the archive file created is missing some Files and Folder(s).
He also mentioned setting options (Ultra & Solid) so I suppose it was actually via “compress with options” and not “compress to xxx.7z” - but even that is still not clear.
At one point he reported the created archive was missing one folder then later folder(s) and 3 to 5 files. No idea if any or all of the files were in the missing folder(s) or not. Nor has he said how he determined that they were missing in the first place. Apparently, he then deleted the archive so cannot refer to it for more info.
Other than that, he’s told us nothing that enables reproducing the fault.
That’s why I asked for a detailed description of a new compression attempt - although he has also indicated that he may just “give up”.We just have to wait and see if there is a reproducible problem.

If ur such a PA genious, u’d know that you can change the default PA 7-zip compression options, and once set, you can then right click and choose compress to xxxx.7z. That is what I’m doing.
Also, I KNOW the files, folders are missing because when I have uncompressed them and then selected them all and gone to properties menu, I get some figures on Windows Explorer. Then I go to the original files and do the exact same thing, and the figures are different. Why? Where have the rest of the files/folders gone?
Also, the “attitude” u describe is natural, as it happens so easily for me, and yet you have a hard time beleived me or replicating the problem. -

I only said that I was a user not a genius, but if you check you will see that I asked if you use “Compression Profiles” in my description request. You had not mentioned them previously.

OK, that’s first time you have actually mentioned that you are uncompressing the archive, up until now it is possible that you were checking archive properties or using explorer view or some other method and that the problem was in that display. But still you haven’t answered the question previously asked by spwolf and myself - how are you uncompressing?
@HandsomeGuy:Also, the “attitude” u describe is natural, as it happens so easily for me…
It may be natural the first time time you report a problem. It is not (or at least it should not) be continued when you start getting responses asking for more details.
@HandsomeGuy:… and yet you have a hard time beleived me or replicating the problem.
I do not think I have ever said that I do not believe you. But - yes, I have repeatedly said I cannot replicate the problem. So have other people.
You will note the length of this thread and you are still providing “bits” of information not previously mentioned. If it is not possible to reproduce the problem, it is highly unlikely that the developers will be able to find and then fix it. So again, is that a “no” as far as providing the full description in one place is concerned?
-
I am decompressing by using PA to open the 7z file and then extracting that way.
-
So again, is that a “no” as far as providing the full description in one place is concerned?
-
On the assumption that there is no “fault” in PA’s compression, that leaves us with the “files in use” problem.
Having been reminded by Charles, it is possible that the problem you are seeing is caused by a “third party” utility which is preventing PA accessing the files. This is usually (but not exclusively) an “anti-virus” or similar.
When PA accesses the file for compressing, this access is prevented because another utility is accessing the file. The “files in use” problem is that PA will not add the file to the archive AND does not give any warning that this file has been skipped.
There are a few threads on this topic - e.g. this thread in the WishList

This guy is very rude!!
I’ve never had much problems with PA - if there was a problem, it would be fixed!
You guys should just ignore him!
Keep up the great work!
