    End of Powerarchiver

Powerarchiver is dead no updates to fix bugs no new features, no communication and errors in program update system with scripting errors. Duplicate context menus windows 11 no fixes no updates I declare that this is the last version.

    Windows 11 Shell Extension crash
    W
Copied the Take Command shortcut, changed Target to be wt.exe -p “Take Command” and saved it. Right-clicked to get to properties and Explorer crashed. (wt.exe is the Microsoft Terminal program, which I have installed from the Microsoft Store.) The Target path had changed to: C:\Users{username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe -p “Take Command” Created a new shortcut in a Start Menu folder and set the command line to the same, and it crashed the same. Created a new shortcut and set the command line to mspaint.exe (also a Windows Store app) and Explorer crashed on right-click on the shortcut. It appears PowerArchiver shell extensions doesn’t handle Windows Store apps in shortcuts properly. Perhaps it needs better defensive coding around checking the Target of shortcuts, or just ignoring shortcuts altogether. Running PA 22.00.11 on Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.6584

Was Power Archiver affected by the WinRAR/.rar vulnerability discovered by ESET researchers recently? Not sure if PA is using their libraries for extraction.

Ultimate zip was made by powerarchiver
    D
From google search AI Overview Yes, that’s correct. UltimateZip was indeed a product of the same company that developed PowerArchiver, and it was essentially a rebranded version of PowerArchiver. It was discontinued and replaced by PowerArchiver.

    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT
Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D
Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 . The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg I know it has non standard quotes in it. However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip. Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it. Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver. When will a fix be implemented?

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB
I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023. PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more. I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result. This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

If i remember correctly, we had similar issues when we went from XP to Vista. And some minor performance issues with Windows 7.

:) Just part and parcel of upgrading software.

@Sir Richard - totally agree, part and parcel of upgrading software, but when MS said a while ago any thing that runs on W7 will run on W8 you at least expect that to happen ;) well may be with a pinch of salt :)

@spwolf - Yep, indeed cool beans MS, cool jolly beans. :)

I tested it at work yesterday (as I was due to format my pc there) and that’s when I found those issues - along with all the other annoying stuff MS have so far implemented to slow productivity. I was glad to re-format my PC to clean W7 after the test. :)
I have still kept a VM of W8 at home which I may get to do some tests on over the weekend.

PA is actually included in their testing runs, we had MS contact us last year for the permission. Obviously thats very cool and at the same time, it seems those bugs were “differed” as these big companies usually do :-).

What did you make VM in, vmware?

I just hope they wont destroy it for us, it seems to me a lot of things are being pushed because of tablets, onto desktop users, which might actually make people switch to something else that doesnt force them to do so :-).

I understand that Winzip has already created a free Ipad application.

obviosly doesnt do the job the full app does but you a rite its a sign of things to come.

MS Using PowerArchiver for testing is great news! Could even open some doors in the future. :)

I think the future is touch screen Laptops, Media Centres and Ultra Pads, with simplistic user interfaces that rely on touch or sound to react.

If this means we have to adapt then so be it! i remember being many debates between myself and conexware about moving PA forward with features that are now part of PA and every other archive competitor. :)

If that means seeing PowerArchiver evolve from computer to pad’s then so be it.

The test was on my ‘proper’ workstation (work pc) - clean W8 CP *64 install. Have reverted my ‘proper’ workstation back to W7 so I can actually work on it :)

I have VM Ware on my workstation, and therefore plan to do a clean install of W8 CP *64 on that, so that can do further testing when time permits.

Totally agree they seem to be forcing desktop users away - it seems W8 is predominantly tablet/touch screen orientated.
There should be no reason why PA should not work in W8 if MS were serious about testing your software. It’s really annoying.
Desktop PC’s are going to be here to stay for a long time, they are so much more productive then laptops/netbooks/tablets etc.

To add to MS bad W8 planning, my boss tried it on his netbook, none of the things on the start screen would launch as it complained about the resolution - well the device screen is not designed to be above 1024*768! Good old MS.

Personally for me as a full time Tech, I see going from PC’s to Pads as a backwards move. Far less productive and less efficient - like I say that just my opinion.

I was at a tech show a few weeks back.

Asus, Samsung & Hp were showing off there brand new power tabs. the asus had a tablet with an i7 CPU, 8 gigs ram with a Nvidia GTX gpu. " They wouldnt show us the true specs"

The screen sizes were staged between small 10, medium 15 and large 17 inch i think.

On each Brand they had docking stations with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, The Asus and HP Models were using Windows 7 Utimate and Samsungs Googles new Chrome OS.

The asus team who had the most impresive model demoed to us playing Crysis 2 at full resolution amoungst other things like office 2010, internet streaming HD Movies, auto cad with 3D Graphics. They then took the unit off the cradle and it turned into a tablet style interface. “a simple skin change which is available in Win 8”

So in princible when on the dock it acted like a full blown Mid to high end PC Workstation with a Windows 7 enviroment and off the dock changed to a tablet skin interface with larger buttons.

The PC is just evolving once again and soon the typical large Computer Case with a seperate Monitor will die off. A sign of this has already begun as demand over the last 5 years has droped year after year by roughly 10 to 15% with Laptops and Tablets growing in demand.

The PC Box is soon to die its a matter of time. These PowerPads are the future for sure. When the 1st laptop came out the sceptics all said it wouldnt replace the PC. Most busineses and Home users now own a Laptop as they are cheaper to produce, can be stored away easily and consume less energy and perform practically 95% of the tasks the typical pc user requires them to.

But one thing is for sure a typical bog standard Andriod and IOS Tablet will never ever replace a full blown PC Enviroment for busineses and power users!

                  Richard,

convertibles are cool… and then Win8 should have the setting for convertibles.

But annoying 99% of your users (desktop) is counter productive.

I have had iPad for quite a while now… for business use, it is as good as iphone. Which is not really. For media consumption, it is great.

HP, Dell and Asus submited a decrease in demand for Desktop’s PCs and market research backs the decline in the majority of end users requiring them.

However, Laptops, notebooks and the new Allinone systems showed an increase.

You could argue that the All in one is a “desktop”. and i would agree ever so slightly.

Although to me a desktop PC is something that can be upgraded, doesnt come with inbuilt monitors and noramlly has a life span of 5 to 7 years before it becomes to slow for modern software.

Where as Laptops, Netbooks and Notebooks are usualy less than 3/4 years. “depending on the specs of course”

as I said, when i said desktop, i only meant desktop version of Windows 8 vs tablet/Metro version.

they are basically forcing tablet/metro onto everyone so they can sell more of them… but if they keep forcing it like this and making it harder to use than Win7, they will start losing more marketshare in desktop.

hm, i just tested with latest version on the site and all was well? It installed without any problems. ZIP was fast as usual, but 7zip seemed slow, not sure if thats trully something wrong.

I tested it on a VM.
I can confirm that it installed ok, the only configuration required is the right click on a .zip file etc, to choose programme to open with, so that the correct icon shows - other than that, it seems to work normally :-)

                                        Hi,
I just reverted the VM to clean.
I can also confirm that 12.12 installs ok (with both UAC on and UAC off), with same right click - choose default association required.

i think default association is win8 thing for sure, it wont leave :-). they have done it on purpose.

i bet we can sidetrack it too :)
