Progress bars
-
I use the context menus for extracting files from archives.
In the last few (minor) updates, the numerical progress of the lower bar progresses as it should, but when the text says 100% of the archive has been extracted, the bar is NOT all the way to the right. The smaller the archive the further to the left it is when the figure reaches 100%; this can be 1/4 (25%) of the way across!
I have not seen it ever go all the way to the right for 100%.
Running Win7 32-bit.

faster than a speeding bullet is PA now…:)
but yeah I noticed that also. -
slower progress than PA you mean? How long does the extraction take in this case?

Assume you’re asking me (DrT)?
Speed is not affected, it is just a recent and annoying graphical issue - just cosmetic.

i mean how much does the extraction last in total in these cases? We dont update progress bar when there are small files because updating it means it slows down… seems connected to that.

It’s fast. But the bar never reaches 100% and it used to. Something has changed recently…noticed by moles42 as well.

I’ve noticed this on 175 MB archives. You mentioned this before where the bar does not appear at all for small files. To me, aesthetically speaking, that is better than it never reaching 100% - only talking about the lower bar (of the two).

its not never, but it skips updating progress for the files that are too small (literally progress takes more time than file extraction), regardless of the other files in the archive.
But this might not be connected to that - what exact format are you using?

Hi,
The issue does not seem to be related to format, but I’m extracting ZIPs and RARs.
Sorry, but in spite of looking hard, I have (lately) not seen the lower progress bar get to full scale (100%). The numerical display does.
How much of a slow down does the bar cause on a modern computer? Is it necessary not to update the bar? Can it be made user configurable?
Best regards

i dont think it the issue we are talking about… i see progress bar just fine. How are you extracting the archives?

btw, it is upper progress that does not get intialized, lower should work fine (full progress)… it is actually quite an timesaver ;-)

The issue is with the lower bar…the upper one is so quick anyway. Win 7 32-bit.
I’ll try to explain better. When the completed % shows 100%, the lower bar is never to the right fully. The smaller the archive the further to the left it is @ 100%. I have seen 100% when the lower bar is only 1/3 the way across. The mostI have seen is about 80% of the way across.
When I initially saw this, I had to check that the archive had been extracted completely and without mistakes!
I am extracting the files by right-clicking and then clicking extracting to <folder name=“”>.

and i cant get it to show 75% ;-)… it always goes to 100%. It probably has to do with file contents of the archive or something more specific about the archive. Try to see what exactly causes it!

It happens with every archive I try. Either a single archive or a multi-part archive. As it happens all the time I will not be able to track it down. I could try it on another PC or another OS if you think it would help.
It never reaches 100%. A multi-part archive of a 700MB file takes it to about 95%+ and with a single archive of 7MB it only gets a third of the way. The text which shows % completed is accurate.

hm, does it show less progress on smaller archives? I think this might be due to the animation of progress bar being slower than actual progress. You will not be able to see progress going from 0 to 100 when it happens in 3 seconds for instance. Same goes for any of big jumps, if progress actually jumps from 95 to 100 in 1 seconds, it will be gone before actual animation manages to make the jump. At least thats what i am seeing here, it might not be the same thing you got?
Seems to be related to animated progress bar in aero… if you set windows classic theme, it will go all the way up properly, probably because it is not animated…

maybe these examples will help demonstrate…
test one is a small compressed file and displays the point drteeth is talking about I think.
the second example is a larger compressed file but it works fine…so it would seem it only occurs on small zip files.

yes, it is due to Windows progress bar animation being too slow for very fast progress… trying using windows classic theme and it works “better” but sure does look ugly eh :-).
We use standard windows progress bar API… and we send it percentages you see written above the progress bar.

Spot on with the animated bar diagnosis.

if thats the biggest problem win7 has, they are on the roll :-)

Apparently, the animated hourglass in the released version is missing a frame (shock, horror) and hacks exist to transfer the full animation from the released RC versions.
Seriously, OT - I think I have discovered a bug where Win7 misreads NIC MAC addresses.
With best wishes…
