Dear PowerArchiver users, We are happy to announce that we have added a jpeg compression codec to PowerArchiver 2017. After testing several available jpeg codecs, together with our internally developed one, we have decided to add the Lepton codec as the jpeg codec in our advanced codec pack (.pa format). Among several available codecs and […]

Seems to be working fine, though I must confess that I rarely add jpegs to archives.

Lepton is a great choice. I would recommend to also use Lepton on progressive JPEG. That can be done using Lepton with -allowprogressive switch. I would also recommend to use your own JPEG codec where Lepton fails and maybe only in Optimize strong/extreme mode. Your own JPEG codec offers world-leading compression ratios. It may be worth introducing it.

@Stephan Isn’t their own codec one that reduces the quality? I’m not sure, but if so there would need to be clear warnings and an option to disable it.

right now there is no such option… our codec will be used only when always better than lepton, which it isnt… so lepton is always used.
Keep in mind that lepton (or any other codec available) does not support all jpegs. I believe dropbox focused on files that exist in real life vs trying to support every part of specification (like arithmetic jpegs) that actually dont get used in real life.
This is why for test, I went and collected different jpegs from different popular sites to compare vs WinZip jpeg and it did substantially better.
thanks!

If it’s not that complex and cost too much performance. Add it…
