    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    T

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

    Hello!

I’ve just created SFX-Archives both from ZIP and 7z-Archives and none has an Icon as it seems.
I use the new version 22.00.11.

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

    Missing Icons
    LuxorL

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

Bug extracting from ZIP etc using Extract here with PA 22.00.09
    Brian GregoryB

    For example:
    Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.

Has anyone else encountered the latest version (14.05.03) crashing when closing the program ?
it seems to be happening when accessing *.zip files…
*.7z files don’t appear to be having the same issue.

This will be hard to track down at present…
it won’t crash when testing with 7z but it crashes 9 times out of 10 when testing random zip files.

will do a clean installation and re-test and report back.

                    No change I’m afraid…:(
same results as before and still testing with random zip/7z files.
random crashing with *.rar files also I’ve since found out…
7z seems to be the only stable format so far.

Problem seems to be attached to my use of the ‘Preview’ window but still only occurs under the zip format.
disabling the preview window seems to stop the crashing…will test further.

and what are you doing, just opening and preview or?

I tested 4-5 zip files quickly with preview and nothing really happens… i dont think any of the code related to preview has changed recently, but who knows.

I just chose random zip/7z files and opened with the preview window active…
each time I closed PA the program crashed when using a zip file…the 7z files however worked fine.

if I switched off the preview window PA worked fine and didn’t crash with either the zip or 7z files.

I did the same tests in Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Service Pack 1)…encountered no problems whatsoever.

I’m guessing this could be a tricky one to track down…
seems strange the previous build worked perfectly and now this problem occurs.
I haven’t installed any other software in Windows 8.1 since the latest build of PA.
I don’t have any AV installed either.

got the settings and have been testing extensively on a W8.1 machine with no luck.
Have been trying different combinations of closing and previewing.
How exactly are you closing PowerArchiver? and is a file actively being previewed at the time of closing?

if you can, please also send over a sample archive that I can try with as well.

Example 1: Closing with this option crashes the program.

Example 2: Closing with this option also crashes the program.

Example 3: Closing with this option and PA closes without any issues.

Regardless whether or not I have a particular file showing in the ‘Preview’ window
PA will still crash under the conditions shown above.

*Remember of course this only seems to happen when using the .zip format.

I can still send the sample zip file I created and used for this test if you want
but it’s been happening with any zip file I’ve tested up to now.

I dropped back to PA 14.05.01 to test out the same scenario
and everything appears to be working fine…no crashes or issues to report.
I will test additional zip files of various sizes.

Just sent you a private message with a short video showing my experience trying to get it to crash, and I cannot. PA exits without crashing every time

If there are any clues that might pop or if anyone experiences anything similar, please let us know, and thanks for your help!!

                                                    Replied to PM

For now I can continue to use latest build without preview enabled
or drop back to earlier version which I know works without any issues.

still a little concerned as to why this problem surfaced though.
I guess some problems remain unsolved no matter how hard you look.

                                                    Any Thoughts….

Sometimes I still like a ‘heads up’ as to what actually caused the issue…:D
I’m always concerned it’s a conflict of programs which in this case it appears it wasn’t.

Since installing this update the files now seem to appear faster in the ‘Preview’ window…
in the previous build they seemed to ‘Hang’ momentarily before displaying.

Wow, if only Microsoft had you guys working for them maybe Windows 8 would have been better than the current train (metro) wreck….

well, they did come far away from 8.00. And this fall update should probably end up being called 9.0 :-).

I mean I bet I downloaded at least 15 GB of of Windows updates since the first official release. Maybe more.
