Re: Explorer.exe Crash on right click
This appears to be happening again with the Power Archiver 2022 shell extensions.
When I have Use Explorer Shell Extensions enabled in Power Archiver Configuration and right-click on c:\Users\username\Start Menu, (hidden Junction file), File Explorer crashes.
I have version 21.00.15 (03/2022) 64-bit installed in Windows 10 Version 21H2 (Build 19044.1826).

Powerarchiver 2022
Right-click and select Encrypt on a folder does not work.
Although it says it encrypts, there is no encrypted file in the destination folder. -
The online update feature within the program suggests there is a later version than the ‘.17’ available on the web site. But clicking either download or update just reinstalls version .17.
Either there isn’t an update OR
the “download” and 'update" links should be repaired. -

Hi,
When you click on the Buy Now link, you come across four tabs - Home or Work, Enterprise Unlimited, Educational Discount, & Gift Discount.
What is the difference between a licence purchased via Gift Discount and a Home/Work licence?
Also, how can I renew the PowerArchiver Select plan a year after the purchase? Will it remind me automatically?
Best,

I’m running PA 21.00.17 64-bit on a 64-bit i7 desktop with W10 Pro, latest version. This 32gb of installed RAM.
As I use the PA pbs system for a number of scheduled archiving operations throughout the day, PA Starter is set to load and run at system startup.
In the course of trying to identify some causes of slowness and bottlenecks in other processes, I notice that PA Starter (PAS) always runs at between 11% and 15% of CPU (see screenshot), usually at about 12-13%. This is by far the highest demanding process on the system, as shown by Task Manager. In Performance Monitor, PAS Average CPU is 8.32, with every other process at less that 1 i.e. in decimal places only.
Task Manager also shows PAS Power Usage as “Very High”, and is the only process shown thus.
I have looked again at the information about PAS at https://wiki.powerarchiver.com/en:help:details:powerarchiver_starter, which was last modified in 2016. The article states a low memory usage for PAS of 784k, which is fair enough, but it is the large CPU overhead which is of concern.
It is of course possible to change the PAS priority, but this has no effect on CPU overhead.
However, is it possible to change PAS, which is required only at intervals to initiate PA scheduled tasks, from consuming so much system resource for every moment of the day?

I’m experiencing very slow extraction speed of multipart RAR files. For the first part the extraction is super fast but when PA reaches the part2.rar the extraction from there on gets super slow. PA needed for a 6,3 GB multipart archive 30 minutes to extract. I tested then with another program and it just took 70 seconds. I had this slow extraction speed with PA for quite a long time and I always thought that is maybe because of a high compression rate that the extraction would take longer. But it seems that only PA gets that slow.
I have lots of multipart archives that are 10+ GB and with PA it would be really time consuming. Is there any solution to this?

Hi. The “Move” Action seems to be Not Working when used in the Tool – Batch Archive.
Using the Options – Configuration – Compression Profiles ---- I created a Profile with the Action of Move. Also set were Zip, and Method Deflate.
When I use the Tool - Batch Archive – It appears to me that the Action Move does not Move the compressed files (basically add to zip, and delete the added file from original location on the same disk). Zip file(s) are created and look ok.
Typically I on the Batch Archive process – I have selected options to use a Profile with the Move Action.
File’s Current Folder Group files from same folder into same archive Add subfolders to separate archivesMy PowerArchiver version is 21.00.17 .
Can you reproduce ? – Or do you need additional details or information?

Hello,
PowerArchiver Command Line 7 support file greater than 2 Go ?
Thanks
-
i just registered my own copy and i need some help to set it…
if i set the ‘configuration>shell extension>open folder after extracting’ checkbox, after decompress an archive is opened the file manager on that folder but… if somebody is using a different file manager how to open XYplorer or Directory Opus for example and NOT the MS file manager?
consider this as a feature request also if not available within the 2022 version

I am looking for a way to stop the UAC elevation prompt when running Powerarchiver. In an old post about PA 2019, someone asked this and got a response to uncheck “all users” at the prompt but I am not seeing where one can do this. It definitely seems like the way to go though as if I click on “More Details” at the prompt I see that it is trying to run “_pautil.exe /paassociate /allusers /my(long binary string)”. Can you let me know? Thanks.
PS I tried renaming _pautil.exe and this worked, but I don’t know what the consequence of doing this may be so I would like to do this properly, thanks.

Just a question is Ashampoo zip pro 4 built by Powerrachiver as it is very similar and uses the pae encryption.

There would be many of us with Intel Processors.
and they have their own optimized zlib algorithm, which can result in more efficiency if used combined with their hardware processor.
Reference:

Zlib is not the only feature that intel has included with their processor, there’s many, which if combined can result in efficient and better compression ratios.

Remembering previous setting
-
Some time ago I asked for a feature.
You added something akin to that feature. Now it seems to have disappeared.
When I add files to encrypted archives, I wanted it to “know” that it was encrypted, and have the encryption option set by default.
You didn’t really do that. But you did add a feature which supposedly remembered the previous setting for ANY archive (which is not quite what I was hoping for).
For whatever reason, it doesn’t remember that setting anymore.
Ideas?
-
in what window? Drag and Drop, Main Add window, etc?
If I remember correctly, it saved last state for Encrypted option… I know it works in main add window here because I have been testing encryption and noticed it stays on… thanks -
I almost always used D&D.
I had hoped for a fix that detected whether the files in the archive were encrypted.
What you did was almost as good. It remember the settings not of each archive, but the last archive I used.
Most of my A are encrypted; a few or not. Even when it was working at its best, once I used an non-archived one, I then had to go into each encrypted A and resent it to enabled/256.
Recently, that feature appears to disappear. I had to use a non-E A yesterday. Then, no matter what I did, I could not get the default to return to encrypted. I made additions to a dozen encrypted files (even to then just remove the added file), each time selecting that I wanted the new file E.
No luck.
BTW, it also doesn’t remember the compression style (deflate, optimized, etc.)
A re-install over the existing version didn’t help.
Since I have your attention, let me reiterate one other wish. Have an option to move, and not just copy, and D&D-ed file onto an archive (say, hold down the shift key when dragging and dropping).

can you save your settings in Options, 7z them and send to support? I want to check with your options since it seems to work fine here.
-
I did a complete uninstall and a reinstall. Still the same.
So it must have been a setting I changed by accident.
If you can give me the registry key, I could change it manually.
BTW, I did install PACL (which I would probably never use). any chance?

i will check tomorrow with official release… what version are you using, 12.12.03 or?

the latest
-
Thanks for sending in your settings!
Just tested them and it seems to work like spwolf mentioned, where settings are saved from previous compression job(i think this is how PA has always handled it)
While Socrates would like to have each opened archive’s settings remembered/scanned so that they appear by default when that archive is opened, right?if that’s so, we can log that in as a feature request
-
Very odd in lots of ways.
I did not remember them for a long time.
Then Spywolf said the feature was added at my request. And it did seem to work.
But not for 2-3 weeks.
I HAD hoped that it would recognize if PA “knew” that an archive was encrypted. But the change was moving in the right direction.
But not more.
It also won’t remember the compression settings.
Where is this store in an ini file or a registry entry . . . I will try to fix it manually.
-
Socrates - check if you have 12.12 or 12.50…. you used to have alpha release before.
Mili - it is supposed to remember last used encryption setting in drag and drop.
-
12.12.03
-
It must be the settings.
Having exactly the same behavior on my laptop.
Very odd.
-
How exactly are you adding the files?
Maybe we are trying something different than you? -
Always drag and drop.
Since it is showing up on both computers, I bet it is the settings somehow.
-
so archive is opened in PA, you drag and drop from explorer to opened window… zip archive, aaes256?
-
No. Just D&D from explorer.
-
so d&d to what? empty PA window? PA icon?
many options :-)
-
Sorry. I thought it was obvious. Icon.
But I think I tried it on an open PA window (though I never do that normally) and the same thing happened.
But it WAS working a few weeks ago.
If it were just on one computer, I would think it is something else. But since it is on both, I am inclined to think it is a setting.
Again, if this is stored in a registry setting, I can change it.
-
i tried everything with your settings and it all worked fine… i will check with dev team tomorrow where is that setting saved exactly.
-
did you try options> profiles> zip and setting encryption there?
-
I have never had any luck with the profile settings.
first. i don’t what ALL archives encyrpted.
second, everything i tried to develop a new profile and rename it, the system won’t let me. never has.
do let me know where it is stored.
-
I found a solution.
But it might be worth it for you to find out WHY it required this solution.
Before, the add window did not — indeed, could not — show a profile.
So I cycled through each of the other compression options: 7zip, cab, tar, etc. and then BACK to zip (set to use zipx).
suddenly the profile appeared; then the system DID remember my settings.
Now if you can add the move options as well as copy . . .
-
Mili - it is supposed to remember last used encryption setting in drag and drop.
It’s supposed to remember last setting in general, including D&D. It’s how it has always worked.
As far as I can remember PA never “detected” whether archives were encrypted or not just for the fact that it is possible for an archive to have encrypted and unencrypted files inside of it.It works like this, PA remembers the last encryption setting you had for the previous archive you made. So if you created a non encrypted archive previously, then you will not have encryption selected when D&D into an already encrypted archive even though it is encrypted.
Again, this is so as PA treats every addition to either and empty or already existing archive individually, giving the user an option to encrypt or not encrypt the files entering the archive.Using profiles is a completely different approach, that’s created if you want every archive to behave based on what you have selected in the profile settings.
Hope that helps.
-
Now if you can add the move options as well as copy . . .
Is this the Move option you’re referring to?
This is the D&D window.
-
OK.
I did NOT always remember settings sticking in drag and drop.
That is why I specifically asked for this feature to be added. it was added it. I noted it on these fora, and spywolf confirmed it.
I did work for a while and then it stopped.
I explained in my initial email today what it took got it back. (No suggestions via the forum or the help desk for more than 2-3 weeks).
Moreover, despite multiple attempts to ask which registry entry controlled this, no one ever responded to said request.
I realized PA does NOT allow move rather than copy to an archive; that is why I have asked for it for a year or more.
It is a common feature in internet explorer (and available in your competition – WinZip for at last 3-4 years): if you drag a file onto an archive icon and held down the shift or control key while doing so (sorry, cannot remember which key), the file would be MOVED to the archive – thus, I would not have to manually delete it after the move.
With PA, I wanted to same. Since the feature was ubiquitous in other programs, I figure it shouldn’t be that difficult to add. Perhaps I am mistaken.
You can do this in explorer (and XYplorer and Word, etc.). I thought PA could add the same feature without too much fuss.
It has not been added, and nothing to indicate any plans to add it.
-
Here is another screenshot when Drag and Dropping a file inside the main PA window with another archive already open.
Please note the highlighted MOVE option which moves file inside the archive, which are then deleted off your initial hard drive location.Going by what you are describing the is exactly the option you are looking for and it’s already in PA 2011.
If that is not the option you are referring to, please be more specific as to the option that you are referring to.
-
You didn’t really do that. But you did add a feature which supposedly remembered the previous setting for ANY archive (which is not quite what I was hoping for).
The remembering last setting feature works fine in all the performed tests here and as spwolf has noted in his tests.
1. I D&D a file inside an archive and select AES 256 encryption.
2. I D&D another file into an archive and AES 256 encryption is already selected based on the previously D&D’d file.PA does not perform as such for you?
Can anyone else confirm that this feature does not work for them and let us know how you got it so we can reproduce it.
-
This gets me part of the way there. But the window has to open.
And you have to set it to always move and replace, whereas the options in explorer, etc., let you determine by holding down a key when D&D whether it will move or copy.
-

Glad to see we’re moving forward :)
You’re referring to the D&D window having to be open in order to select which “Action” for it to perform?
You would like to have keyboard shortcuts available for the “Action” menu when performing D&D?
The setting will be remembered based on the last setting used. So, if you have selected “Move” on the previous D&D operation, all future D&D operations will have “Move” preselected until you manually change it.
Is that something that works good for you? -
i think Socrates wants us to detect if key is pressed while d&d and do action then… I have to figure out if thats possible.
-
Yes, Spywolf is right. Have one of the options (copy or move) as the default, and the default can be overridden by pressing the Ctl or Shft key when D&D. Again, basically the same thing available in explorer, Word file list, etc.
BTW, any idea why my solution reported on the 6th was a solution? Clearly by cycling through the encryption types reset some errant registry key. But it seems profitable to figure out what it reset and why, so it wouldn’t happen again.
-
I have the default ZIP and ZIPX set to “Move and replace.”
But when I drag a file either onto a ZIP icon or an open ZIP, the option is set to add and replace.
