    • File Explorer Shell Extension crash on Junction

Re: Explorer.exe Crash on right click

This appears to be happening again with the Power Archiver 2022 shell extensions.

When I have Use Explorer Shell Extensions enabled in Power Archiver Configuration and right-click on c:\Users\username\Start Menu, (hidden Junction file), File Explorer crashes.

      I have version 21.00.15 (03/2022) 64-bit installed in Windows 10 Version 21H2 (Build 19044.1826).

Either there isn’t an update OR

    • Power Archiver Starter - CPU and power overhead

      PA_Fan

I’m running PA 21.00.17 64-bit on a 64-bit i7 desktop with W10 Pro, latest version. This 32gb of installed RAM.

As I use the PA pbs system for a number of scheduled archiving operations throughout the day, PA Starter is set to load and run at system startup.

In the course of trying to identify some causes of slowness and bottlenecks in other processes, I notice that PA Starter (PAS) always runs at between 11% and 15% of CPU (see screenshot), usually at about 12-13%. This is by far the highest demanding process on the system, as shown by Task Manager. In Performance Monitor, PAS Average CPU is 8.32, with every other process at less that 1 i.e. in decimal places only.

Task Manager also shows PAS Power Usage as “Very High”, and is the only process shown thus.

I have looked again at the information about PAS at https://wiki.powerarchiver.com/en:help:details:powerarchiver_starter, which was last modified in 2016. The article states a low memory usage for PAS of 784k, which is fair enough, but it is the large CPU overhead which is of concern.

It is of course possible to change the PAS priority, but this has no effect on CPU overhead.

However, is it possible to change PAS, which is required only at intervals to initiate PA scheduled tasks, from consuming so much system resource for every moment of the day?

    • Slow multipart RAR extraction

      A

I’m experiencing very slow extraction speed of multipart RAR files. For the first part the extraction is super fast but when PA reaches the part2.rar the extraction from there on gets super slow. PA needed for a 6,3 GB multipart archive 30 minutes to extract. I tested then with another program and it just took 70 seconds. I had this slow extraction speed with PA for quite a long time and I always thought that is maybe because of a high compression rate that the extraction would take longer. But it seems that only PA gets that slow.

I have lots of multipart archives that are 10+ GB and with PA it would be really time consuming. Is there any solution to this?

Hi. The “Move” Action seems to be Not Working when used in the Tool – Batch Archive.

When I use the Tool - Batch Archive – It appears to me that the Action Move does not Move the compressed files (basically add to zip, and delete the added file from original location on the same disk). Zip file(s) are created and look ok.

Typically I on the Batch Archive process – I have selected options to use a Profile with the Move Action.

    • Need to find out how to disable "all users" to end UAC elevation prompt on running PA

      Q

I am looking for a way to stop the UAC elevation prompt when running Powerarchiver. In an old post about PA 2019, someone asked this and got a response to uncheck “all users” at the prompt but I am not seeing where one can do this. It definitely seems like the way to go though as if I click on “More Details” at the prompt I see that it is trying to run “_pautil.exe /paassociate /allusers /my(long binary string)”. Can you let me know? Thanks.

PS I tried renaming _pautil.exe and this worked, but I don’t know what the consequence of doing this may be so I would like to do this properly, thanks.

    • Does PA supports Intel's zlib?

      G

There would be many of us with Intel Processors.

and they have their own optimized zlib algorithm, which can result in more efficiency if used combined with their hardware processor.

      Reference:
      https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/white-papers/zlib-compression-whitepaper-copy.pdf

Can we get the same Functionality Under Hardware Acceleration Feature?

Zlib is not the only feature that intel has included with their processor, there’s many, which if combined can result in efficient and better compression ratios.

Whilst I know not supported, only good to advise you at this time of installation issues.

During the install on CN W8 -Dev *64 the installer had an error at the part where it removed backup files.
I could see that Powerarchiver appeared to be installed and therefore launched task manager to close the hung installer.

Powerarchiver launches and seems to work ok, other than the hang as mentioned in install.

The other thing to note is that the file association does not seem to work fully via the Powerarchiver interface, you click to apply, it seems to but does not. However when launching a example zip file with no associated icon, CN W8 dev asks what application to open with. When selecting Powerarchiver it changes the icon and remembers the selection.

As say, don’t expect support at this stage, it is to bring it to your dev’s attention to help aviod any issues further down the road.

could well be some issue with explorer in w8.

The only other bit of software I use which may have an issue pertaining to explorer is dropbox (selective sync) dialogue box does not appear.

At least it is something to keep an eye out for when the beta comes out. Always good to pass on findings rather than keep them to ones self :)

Have not come across any other Powerarchiver discrepancies since this morning, contextual menus work as they should - as does the main programme :)

absolutely… well it should be very much the same as Win7 when it comes to system things. So Windows Installer not working I would definitively call an bug.

Hi spwolf, I have done some further testing this morning to manually uninstall the previous version a install the latest 1201.

During the uninstall I got the following screen shot of an error

              then the uninstaller just hung.
During the install I got the following screen shot of an error

and then the installer just hung, leaving this on screen

Using task manager I closed the hanging apps.

Just for testing I did thereafter try WinRar to see how that would install, and that did not provide any install/uninstall errors.

Hope the above info gives you some Idea of the errors and more technical screen shot of code errors help.

PS also briefly caught glimpse of some message (not exact wording as it was quick) ‘installer database does not have the required logic to’

              Kind Regards

Hi just caught me, off for weekend in a mo…

Just done as requested, extracted the setup file.
The .msi installed without any issues.

The integration/association still does not default correctly,
you have to right click and open with, choose default program, which when selected changes the icons and defaults ok. Doing so within PA did not.

                  Hope this helps :)

Just provide an update: Seems quite a few things I have installed do not automatically pick up the default viewer/app icons. You click on example a .pdf and then it asks what .pdf viewer out of the ones installed you like to open it with.

Am sure MS will improve explorer functionality by the Beta.
Regarding PA not come across any further issues :)

                                No probs.
I have also just checked for you, as before - if the .msi is extracted that runs and installs fine.

The only proviso to that ‘installs fine’ is what I believe a W8 issue where certain icons don’t show until initially selected with the open with dialogue. Once windows is informed example .zip is to open with PowerArchiver the icon shows for .zip

There are a few programmes that this icon issue happens with, so I personally believe nothing at this stage of W8 the icon issue is nothing to worry about - I would be more concerned if it was Beta…

                                    Hi,
I have extracted the file, and then ran the setup as requested from the extracted file.
It looked like it might go through quicker & ok, but then it failed. At a glance same error as before:

Just a quick thing i noticed… on a windows XP Pro SP3 OS.

When i downloaded 12.02.02… it said i didnt have admin rights… however, i do! so i uninstalled PowerArchiver and ran the Install again and it worked ok no issues…

So not sure if this is a bug, but it isnt allowing users to upgrade PA from Prior Versions.

EDIT: Just a quick note that on my Home Systerm Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1 It updated the OS without an admin error message but then hung and prompted me to restart. After restart PA worked like a charm so no noticible curruption on install.

Sounds like the Install just needs updating, and checking on Older OS’s

can’t recall it in detail…very lengthy message which just indicated that I couldn’t install over a previously installed version…at the time I assumed you as the dev team had instigated a ‘clean’ installation only.

I realise now that this wasn’t the case…the clean installation however had no hiccups whatsoever.

I could probably recreate if you wish by reinstalling previous version ?
