Missing Icons

35 parts (each 100MB) containing the total of 150 files (each about 23MB) divided into 10 folders.

In this situation, extracting 10 files from one of the folders is very slow. As soon as the progress windows appears, it is almost frozen. After a long while, the progress bar finally starts moving. When you think extraction is finished, the progress window is frozen again for a long time. The overall extraction time is very long. I tried WinRAR and 7-Zip, and PA is definitely taking a longer time.

Is anyone experiencing the same?

That you have Win 7 (32 bit).
Does the rar also have unicode file/folder names?
Do you know what rar options were used to create it (e.g. solid etc)?

No unicode. Solid, RAR version 2.9. No password or comment.

I am afraid that there are a lot of variables related to this. It might be hard to pin down what is going on.

Just bump this topic if you guys experienced similar things :)

It should be faster rather than slower… it might be something very particular that unrar.dll chokes on.

I think I found out what the problem is. It’s Microsoft Security Essentials.

Also, the severity of the problem depends on the size of an archive (not the size of files you choose to extract).

Now, I think it’s natural that virus software checks extracted files. But the problem is, as I said above, it’s very particular when this happens in PA and, when it happens, PA’s progress windows hangs. WinRAR and 7-Zip don’t have such problem. I excluded extracted files’ extension and path from checking, but the same result.

Virus software really doesn’t like how PA does things, does it? :(

Kaspersky issue was very very different.

More people complain about things as this, it gets fixed sooner by AV companies.

AV companies fix incompatibilities quicky enough, they are worried about lawsuits - ie angle to take would be it effects only one program while competition works fine ;-)

Have you tried to send some kind of support mail to MS? Even filling a from is a pain :) I was going to try the forum, but it looks ugly and disorganized :p

all AV companies have emails that are very hard to find, i wonder why ;-).

It took me longer to find where to send complaint about Kaspersky and AVG then to write actual complaint ;-)

Just out of interest - is turning off “real time scanning” enough or is it more complicated?

Complete uninstallation is needed because many anti-virus programs put a driver deep in the kernel level.

thanks… lets see if they fix it soon… if they do not, then i will email them myself, and be rather mean about it ;-)

UPDATE:

I found a way around. Exclude the temporary directory specified in Configuration > Folders in the anti-virus program.

I don’t recommend using the default temp directory for this purpose because it’s also the system temp directory. Excluding it would expose your system to a great risk.

Of course, the best way is that MS will do something about it. After all, WinRAR and 7-Zip don’t need such tweaking.
