    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    T

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

    Missing Icons
    LuxorL

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

Bug extracting from ZIP etc using Extract here with PA 22.00.09
    Brian GregoryB

    For example:
    Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.

I just installed V11.50.61 and created a split zip file from one of my VMware image directories (about 32GB’s worth of files). The creation process went ok, but upon trying to unzip the file or perform a zip ‘test’ process using Winzip 11, I get a crc error part way in. Let me know what other info you may require.

      TIA

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Not only do I get a crc error in Winzip when doing a ‘test’, I get a crc error with PA when trying to unzip it.

ok, and how did you create the zip file, what options did you use and what interface did you use (shell or main PA).

            thanks!

I right-clicked from Explorer and selected “Compress with options…”. I then only changed ‘Multiple Disk Spanning’ to ‘DVD (4.7GB)’ leaving Method at Deflate and Compression at Normal.

When I test the zip file with Winzip, I get the following in a requester.

              WinZip

Error in file #19: bad Zip file offset (Error local header signature not found): disk #3 offset: 365750754.

              OK Help

When I try to unzip the file with PA, somewhere around the middle of the operation, I get an extremely wide requester with jumbled text displayed.

i tried the same and it worked fine, so it might be a bit more specific that just large file.

Can you create an screenshot of error in PA please?

Also, please try creating same archive without spanning feature. So we can see if whole - big archive is OK for the beginning.

Also, please try creating same archive without spanning feature. So we can see if whole - big archive is OK for the beginning.

he said it works, just spanning doesnt.

you have to explain what exactly does not work.

can you try selecting and compressing only several of these files, maybe it is some specific file/filename that is causing it to happen and that could help us isolate the issue.

I have tested with 50 GB archive and all went well. So it has to be a bit more specific.

                                          thank you!

I have more info, but no specifics that I feel confident will help.

I have tried zipping and splitting large sets of files, but none cause the problem except those from my VMware sets of files, and not all of those.

The problem appears to be related to zipping up large files that when finished, end up being near the end of the split boundary.

Example, I had eleven vm files that were all nearly 2GB in size. If I zipped them in dictionary name order, I could repeat the error, but if I renamed them and zipped in a different order, the problem did not exist. File name length seems to have nothing to do with the error.

Does any of this make any sense?

not really, but i will try creating VM files of same size and reproducing it like that :)

would it be possible for us to download those original files? Only way we can reproduce it (and fix it).

Maybe try with less files but same folder (smaller file size) and see if that works or not, if we can get smaller sample it will be easier.

                                                      thanks

The file set is over 32GB, plus this is a VMware image that contains proprietary software. There is no way I could get it to you. I’ll try to come up with a repeatable scenario that causes the problem using smaller and different files, however the problem only seems to show up at the DVD sized split boundary.

See if you can reproduce the problem using the below steps.

                                                          Download http://www.bertel.de/software/rdfc/rdfc.zip
Unzip the rdfc.exe file and put it in a temporary directory with at least 37GB of space.
From the temporary directory, create the test files by running the following commands in order:
                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.vmdk” 1818

                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s003.vmdk” 2139947008

                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s007.vmdk” 2140471296
                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s008.vmdk” 2137587712
                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s009.vmdk” 2135818240
                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s010.vmdk” 2144796672
                                                          rdfc “Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition-s011.vmdk” 2146172928
Highlight all the vmdk files, right-click and select parameters per the attached pic.

I then open the .zip file in Winzip and perform a ‘Test’. I get a CRC error. If you unzip with PA, you should eventually get either a CRC error, an erroneous password prompt, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Things are looking good. I tested two large directories that had problems before when zipped/split, but have no problems when zipped/split with the latest PA build. I’ll continue to keep a close watch on new zips going forward and let you know if I see a repeat of the problem.

                                                                        Thanks!
