PA 11.00.78 Eating all System Memory
-
Hello All,
I’m running PA to decompress a zip backup file of 160GB and during the process my system becomes slow and unresponsive.
Digging a little bit I discovered that PA is using all my 8GB of RAM to do this process.
The normal operation of copy a large folder using Windows Explorer doesn’t consume all my system memory.
Machine Specs:
Vista Ultimate 64
8GB RAM
Core2Quad Processor.Any ideas?

that unusual as there is a limit in microsoft windows of 4gb of ram that can be used. so you can’t have 8gb on a pc computer.

Hello my friend,
The limit of 4GB only apply to 32bit operating systems.
I’m using a 64bit operating system and this is a completelly diferent situation.
Any ideas?

I’m looking to Task Manager and Powerarchiver is a 32 bit software. I will let try to do the same test on a 32 bit machine, and compare the results.
By the way, anyone does this kind of test? To decompress a large file (160GB) or compress it?
Maybe the problem is force a 32 bit aplication to handle a file that big.
No one have a clue?
What options that I have as paying user?
Regards,
Marcelo.

No ideas, but a few questions …
What format are you using, what was used to create the Zip?
Is the 160GB a single file or the size of the archive after compression?Note: 7z is “known” to be memory intensive.

I’m using a native .zip file, and the 160GB file is contained in one unique file.
I removed the PA and installed the 7zip 64 for testing purposes and I am able to decompress this file with no problems at all.
During decompress phase, the memory usage remains in the 1.6GB for whole system, and no huge increase was noticed.
With PA, the memory usage grows and grows until the system start to become unresponsive.
I have 8GB of memory and a Q9450 Quad Core processor. The core usage still low but memory usage becomes high few minutes after.
I guess we have a kind of bug here…

Marcelo - this is currently an issue with huge single file, it is the size of single file that matters, not commulative size of the archive and it is an zip issue only.
We will be solving it in update to the zip engine later on this year, however it is not an simple fix for us (we will be replacing our zip engine completly).
thanks

WOW, you’re kidding right? You should be ashamed for making such a statement.
