FTP logon issues!
-
How the heck do I log on to a FTP server on PowerArchiver 2009?
I see nowhere to enter the address.
I use SmartFTP which works great and easy.
But I thought I would give PowerArchiver 2009 FTP a try.
With SmartFTP all I had to to was have have SmartFTP running and then highlight and copy the FTP address and it would add it to SmartFTP automatically
I am trying to make up my mind if I should upgrade to the Pro version.

Did you open FTP Window?
-
-
Did you add a profile by clicking on the Profiles button ?
-
You can click on Profiles and set new profile. Or you can use box right to the profile to enter ftp info!
If you use profiles, you will be able to use them everywhere in PA…

Thats the thing I don’t understand. What is this profile thing all about? And what do I enter?
All I want to do is goto someones FTP site. -
you enter ftp address, what else would you enter? :)

Ok the problem was that those FTP sites that I was trying are down.
Having said that I think I will stick with SmartFTP as it can do way more then Power Archiver can.

definelty, PA FTP is meant for quick upload download, etc, it is not and wont be fully featured ftp client with queues and what not… But is it quite usable, yes…

If you do not want to use profiles, you can just enter ftp address, user name, password and click on Connect button just like as in “SmartFTP”. This way of connectings either directly or by profiles is almost the same in SmartFTP.

Yes I understand that.
The thing that seems to be missing form PowerArchiver FTP is there seems to be noway to click on lets say for example a folder with picture and download which ever one you want. You I do this with SmartFTP
Try this FTP for Example
nssdcftp.gsfc.nasa.gov
port 21
When you logon to that FTP address look for a folder called “photo_gallery”
With Smartftp it will show you all the photos in the smartftp interface and you can download what you want.
With PowerArchiver FTP I don’t even understand how to see any of the photos. Its just shows the folder but not whats in them.
-
I connected with username anonymous to a server you specifed, I was able to browse to any folder including photo_gallery and then download and of files/folders. If you want see also a local folder on your computer so you can either use D&D as in other programs - set “Explorer with Folders” Folder’s display style.

I really think PowerArchiver 2009 FTP sucks!
It does not work good and just adds bloat to PowerArchiver.
I can’t see anyone who uses FTP a lot wanting to user PowerArchiver 2009 FTP. It just seems like a big waste to me.
Guess I’ll be sticking to the standard version.
I really think its a mistake to add these so callled Pro features. Because you now have what should be called PowerArchiver 2009 Bloat Edition.
You should keep PowerArchiver light and simple and just focus on Archive stuff.
It does not need all this other extra stuff.
But nothing against you guys this is just one person opinion.

then dont use them and voila. Thats what Standard is there for.
I personally use both ftp and burner myself.
Complete point of Pro edition is to use it for something not specific for PA.
Now, we could have made bunch of things Pro such as Backup, Preview and other things… would that make you any happier? I dont think so.

And one more thing after I entered my new user name and password for PowerArchiver 2009 standard Edition how come I still have the FTP option listed?

FTP Window or? And where?
thanks.
p.s. more constructive would be to tell us what you want improved in FTP. When it just came out in 99, PA was quite sucky compared to big players then and look at us now :)

p.s. none of the basic compression utility features will ever be in Pro only, they will always be in Standard version of PA. Thats our promise :-)
