PA Shutdown Problems
-
Occasionally I am not able to shutdown PA. When I attempt to exit the application the archive that was open seems to be closed within the application but the application itself will not exit. I need to force the exit by killing the process.
I just figured out the cause of the problem today when I download a mailing list archive and opened using PA. I then double-clicked the text file inside, which launched TextPad (my text editor). I read the file and then did some other things. At some point I tired to close PA. The archive I opened seemed to close (the contents of the file disappeared from PA) but PA would not close. I was going to do my usual and kill the process when I thought about the text file I had opened in TextPad. I closed the file in TextPad but that did not allow me to shutdown PA. I then shutdown TextPad and then was able to shutdown PA.
I tried doing the same with MS Word 2000. I zipped a Word document and then opened the archive with PA. I then double-clicked the Word document and launched Word. I then tried to exit PA and it worked.
So it seems that TextPad is keeping a reference to the text file and is stopping PA from shutting down.
Is this something that can be fixed with PA or is it a TextPad problem?

What is the version of PA you are using? Check About window for exact version…

I am running XP SP2, TextPad 5.0.3 and PA 10.10.10.
I am thinking it may be time to rebuild my laptop. Little annoying things have been going on for quite a while. I usually rebuild once per year and it is well over a year now.
