PA2007 - RC1 install over Beta 10 in Vista
-
I installed RC1 over beta 10 and it asked to shut down “explorer.exe”. When explorer came back after install I lost some tray icons (a la explorer.exe crashing in the Windows 95 days).
I then tried a clean install without incident.
Did this happen to anyone else?
-
installer actually closed Explorer?
-
A dialog came up saying explorer.exe must be closed to continue the installation. I accepted it and am not sure what would happen if I didn’t.
-
Odd!,
After the last update I made sure I uninstalled beta 10 before the RC1 install. I also cleared my registy of all related PA items.
Usually when installing an application that requests Internet Explorer to be closed means that it is currently trying to obtain data from IE or port 80.
Maybe PA was trying to look for an update during your install? a one off issue possibly.

no, it is explorer.exe, not iexplore.exe.
It is due to shell extensions being loaded. In fact, since it is using Vista’s restart manager, you would think it wouldnt want to “close” explorer :-).

what version of Vista do you have?
-
Vista Home Premium 32 bit OEM. NOD32 is also installed.

ok, so you can check the other option (restart) which will replace dll only after you reboot.
PowerArchiver’s MSI setup is using Restart Manager, which is an Vista component that presents you with the options for the restart, so I guess thats how Microsoft wants restarts handled.

ok - I think the upshot is only select the close explorer.exe option if you trust Vista to properly re-load explorer.exe. My experience was not encouraging.

i really dont understand why they made it so - i guess they thought it was an feature? (so you dont have to restart your computer?). Pretty weird…

Just a thought not an opinion - it might be better to not use the restart manager and simply request a restart at the end (like XP). Unsophisticated users may find the explorer.exe closing/restarting behavior disruptive and blame (unfairly) PA.

it is not an option, we have to use it for Vista certification… I think it will make sense for normal users who wont notice anything wrong, it is us that will…
