PA 2023 22.00.08
Long time no seeing. So I start up the new year with a first problem : the virtual driver cannot be installed. Reason : it is missing in the Fast Ring PatchBeam Update Service…

It seems a standard problem with new releases :-)
Can I have a link or can it be fixed. Thank you. CU later -
When the function for testing archives is invoked via the shell context menu (PowerArchiver > Test) then all the files in the archive get extracted to the current folder.
The test dialog reports as many errors as there are files in the archive but it fails to give any hint as to which files are supposed to be erroneous or what the nature of the problem might be. Comparing the extracted files to the originals shows no differences at all.
The .7z in question was produced with maximised compression settings in 7zip (taking forever but resulting in smaller archives than .7z produced by PowerArchiver with maximised settings). Therefore I wanted to see whether PowerArchiver can at least test .7z that it produced itself. Hence I had PowerArchiver convert a .pa with the same contents to .7z. There weren’t any errors reported but the resulting .7z contained fewer than half of the files contained in the .pa (137 of 366), so I scratched that test.
Performance is abysmal when testing via the context menu (e.g. almost 2 minutes for testing a .7z that 7zip tests in 4 seconds), but that is most likely due to the fact that the extracted files are written to disk. Testing the same .7z in the PowerArchiver GUI takes only 8 seconds but causes the mysterious appearance of a UAC dialog, as reported elsewhere.
The testing function is vital because PowerArchiver has a history of producing archives that it cannot unpack without errors or that do not conform to the respective file format standards (e.g. ZIP) so that other programs report them as erroneous.
The point of creating archives is that the files in them will most likely have to be extracted at some point. If the extraction cannot be guaranteed to produce correct results then the whole program is absolutely pointless. Actually, worse than pointless - it causes data loss and hence damage.

In PowerArchiver 2023 22.00.06 configuration, the option labelled “Start PowerArchiver 2023 Starter when my computer starts” seems to be redundant.
I am only allowed to change this option when PA Starter is disabled, and then it seems to be ignored.
When I enable PA Starter this option is forced to the enabled state.
I think it’d be good to remove “Start PowerArchiver 2023 Starter when my computer starts” completely. I’ve always found it confusing having both options.
Added later: However i don’t particularly want to use queue but I do like having the PAStarter icon in my tray area.

PA 22.00.06 (PA 2023)
It has been the case with previous versions of PowerArchiver, but I had hoped that the latest might behave differently. Not so, I’m afraid.
I have, for various obscure reasons, created a few .pa archives, mainly in the hope that they will save me some more space. From time to time, I use the “Test” option to check that important archives are OK and uncorrupted.
With every .pa archive I’ve tested, the process runs through OK but then reports that there are errors. This is always the number of files in the archive e.g. if 11 files, then 11 errors reported.
In the .pa, I can:-
preview the files (usually PDF) extract some or all files and look at or use them convert the .pa to a .zip or .zipx archive, which then works fine and tests without errorsIs it the case that the Test routine isn’t designed for .pa archives, or is there another reason? Although the .pa seems to function properly, despite the test reporting errors, I would like to be sure that every .pa is OK and not “broken”.
Some of the .pas are quite old and produced with earlier PA versions (they are truly “archives”). If I extract all the files in the old .pa, create a new, fresh .pa and add back the files to that, then test the new, no errors (at least in the .pa I’ve tried this on) are reported. This would suggest a mismatch between old .pas and newer versions of PA itself.

See the, supposedly, blank space where the green box is? It’s like that in Modern Light theme too. I can toggle it, but it’s missing text or shouldn’t be there I guess?
Thanks :)

For some reason, the PowerArchiver functions in the Windows 11 context menu no longer work after the last Windows Update. Only the functions in the classic context menu function as they should.
I’ve tried uninstalling PowerArchiver and using RevoUninstaller to remove all bits and pieces that were left behind and did a clean install of PowerArchiver, it didn’t fix the issue. Other items in the Windows 11 context menu work.
PowerArchiver does not save changes in Excel
-
Hi,
I use PowerArchiver to encrypt and archive an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file that I periodically update. What I do is I click on the “PAE” file which has the encrypted and zipped Excel file, I am asked for password which I enter, I am then asked for another password with I enter, then I get to access the Excel file.
I add and/or update some rows of Excel data, then I click save.
When I exit Excel, I am prompted by PowerArchiver (PA) if I want it to update the archived file - to which I choose “Yes”. I check the date/time shown on the Excel file in the archived Excel file shown in PowerArchiver which looks OK, i.e. that it has updated the archived file with my updates.
I then close/exit the opened PowerArchiver file - at which time I am asked if I want to save my updates - to which I reply “Yes”.
However, when I go back to check if the updates have been saved, I see that they have not been saved.
This has caused me to use a workaround which takes a lot of steps and time … i.e. deleting the Excel shown in the PowerArchiver folder, then savingthe Excel file and encrypting and archiving it within the folder…… I cannot continue to do this, I will be forced to STOP using PA.
HELP!!!
Thanks and Regards

this should be fixed in next release, I think you reported it before. We discovered something similar with simply updating file, If I remember correctly, and the issue was that it wasnt functioning properly if you saved file several times (PA would only check first time.
So try editing excel file, save it once only, and then exit PA - does that make it work?
thanks,

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply.
However, I tried your suggestion and when I saved the Excel file and then quit Excel.
PA asks me it I want to save updates and I choose YES, but it does not save the updates.
On the other hand I tried a different path which worked. I tried to exit Excel without saving the changes I had made, and when the Excel prompt came asking if I wanted to save the changes I chose YES. Then PA asked me if wanted to update the changes to which I chose YES. It saved the changes. So this might be a good workaround I can use, eventough it is different from best practices I use of first saving the Excel updates before trying to exit.

save it as normal, then when you want to exit, do some “fake” change, such as adding one letter somewhere and then exit?
What is strange is that action itself should be completly the same - it might be that excel itself is saving files differently for whatever reason, we have to investigate that a bit better to see what exactly Excel does.
thanks - if you discover anything else, please let us know - and update the thread to make sure we update it for next release.

Hi,
I’ve experienced the exact same thing with PA it seems to be a problem with the Power Archiver updating its archive more than Excel saving as when you open a document from PA and make an amendment to it then save it stores the new version in a temp folder as below.
Now when PA provides you the message "File “abe” was modifiled do you want to update the archive? and you select yes it seems to have difficulties gaining this data.
What I have noticed is when you open the document in question make the changes press the save button Twice! once to bring up the message “archive changed do you want to save” then again and close the document down…
This seems to do the trick.
The temp folder which is only available when you have the encrypted zip open and are working on the document is as follows;
C:\DOCUME~1\User1232\LOCALS~1\Temp_PA560

It seems to me that excel updates file twice when you hit save (probably something to do with temp file it creates) - and PA catches first update if you hit exit in Excel after saving.
Try this:
1. Edit file in excel
2. Hit save
3. When PA asks you first time, click OK
4. PA will then ask you 2nd time, click OK again.Does that work? It seems as if you hit only save and exit, PA catches first one and doesnt have time to catch second update of the file.
-
ok, so basically, when PA asks you to update, dont update until you actually exit Excel - this means that when Excel updates its file for 2nd time (with proper, modified version), PA will save it.
Maybe it would be good if we could make our update window show in background, so you will see it only when you exit Excel. I will see if that is possible.

Hi Spywolf,
Sounds like a solution to me, I have tried this and it works it is on the second save and final exit of excel that the documents updates its archive.
If your good at macros you could always setup excel to save twice and close automatically for you.
Would be nice if PA As you said would show you the progress of updates in the background!
However, if I was a guesing man i would say that this same problem happens with other file types. - will look into it.
