Can't open archive

  • Hello, I wanted to open the archive I downloaded but it won’t work. All I see is the directory structure from C: until the archive.

It was an archive (tar) containing icons downloaded from art.gnome.org.

It’s about 6meg in size so there must be something in it.

It was the archive on this page:
    http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/1150#

What could be the problem? I think the file was made for linux, could this be the problem?

  • If you are referring to the “Unofficial Tango” then it worked for me.
    It is actually a tar.bz2 file. It extracts into a sub-folder Tango\ …
Lets start by asking if your PowerArchiver is up to date - what version are you using?
    @Stephen:

Hello, I wanted to open the archive I downloaded but it won’t work.

How are you trying to open it? Have you activated the flag Misc - Smart Handling - Open TAR files transparently? Are you opening it with PowerArchiver GUI or are you using the Explorer shell extensions?

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Are you using Windows Explorer or are you looking within the archive using the PowerArchiver GUI?

As I say - extraction works for me so it is not a Linux compatibility problem.

  • Version 9.51.02

I used the shell extensions, and I have open tar files trans. checked.

All this produces is an empty folder with the same name as the archive.

If I open PA and double click on the file in the folders bar I see ‘C:’

If I expand this I get ‘Documents and settings’ under the ‘C:’. If I keep expanding I get to the archive and double clicking on this does nothing.

    thanks!

  • Same problem, even deleted the file from browser cache and re-downloaded.

Can anyone send me the icons in a zip? stephen underscore c underscore at hotmail dot com

for some reason, it downloads as .tar.tar file. Go to your download folder, and rename it to .tar.bz2.

Then try opening it with PowerArchiver.

    that has worked for me.

    thanks,

  • That fixed the problem. Can powerarchiver be made to do this automatically?

    Browser problem ?

    • it is correct (tar.bz2) with both Opera and Firefox for me :p

  • Hmm… must be an IE issue 🙂
