From the guys who gave us Opera comes a new browser.
A technical preview has been released which you can download from here
Chrome based but the UI is more like the old Opera with notes, bookmarks, (email coming later down the line). Basically all the things that Opera ASA told us was not possible in Opera 15+
Maybe one worth keeping an eye on, for us old Opera devotees.
I have heard many of you refer to Total Commander.
I currently use Xyplorer –- which in many ways is nice. But (a) there is almost always some glitch that causes it to crash if I use it as the default file manager, and (b) the developer’s help files are less than adequate, and the developer won’t give any help.
So I am thinking about changing.
Are you happy with it? Is it stable? Instructions clear?
I do not want cloud backup. I have a service and am happy with it.
I do not want imaging backup. Tried it and didn’t like it.
I want a program that will backup the files I specify efficiently (without insanely slowly down the system), on a schedule, and with some decent options (exact copy, plain copy, versions, etc.).
I have used a program I liked (SecondCopy) for at least a dozen years. Never thought I would change. But they are now on beta 4 on Version 9 – after starting on beta 1 some 7-8 months ago.
It is still plagued with nagging problems. I keep trying it, finally uninstall the beta and reinstalling version 8. This is getting tiresome.
It is time to look for an option.
However, I am not having any luck. I keep find online backups and imaging software. But I don’t want either.
Ideas?
I would appreciate your guidance.
Hugh
I need help to my accidentally deleted pictures from memory card. Is there any software to get back lost digital pictures from memory card?
Here’s a quick review of Opera 15 which has just been released.
It sucks.
Don’t waste your time downloading it.
Oh and it sucks.
:(
For backup my documents i use cobian backup for some years. Ones everything is set, it runs by itself and the user don’t have to worry that there will be a failure with the backup.
Are there people who uses cobian backup or is everyone using PA backup?
I don’t know if i must ask the next question in this section or in the wishlist.
Cobian backup is for sale. Is Conexware interested in the program or trying to implement the advanced option(scheduled backup parts)?
Now i’m using the standard version of PA, but scheduling the backup is the only thing that i’m not satisfied about.
I am looking for a good development tool that will help me track revisions of software I am creating, and that is web based. Just looking for suggestions on what others use.
And not one that is hosted through another solution but that I can host myself.
Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)! This means we’ve completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to our OEM partners. They can now begin preparing new Windows 8 PCs and devices they’ll introduce starting with General Availability. For more on RTM, I suggest reading this blog post from Steven Sinofsky on the Building Windows 8 blog.
So when will folks be able to get their hands on the new Windows 8 RTM code?
People will be able get Windows 8 starting on October 26th either by upgrading for $39.99 or on a new PC or device. And if you buy an eligible Windows 7 PC today, you will be able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer.
However, we have a number of programs that provides various audiences early access to the Windows 8 RTM code to help prepare for Windows 8 as it enters the marketplace this fall:
•August 15th: Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via your MSDN subscriptions.
•August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions.
•August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization.
•August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8.
•August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8.
•September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.

When I try to select the forum on website shown on my WP7 phone, it never shows the dropdown list, It just reloads the page.
When clicking on community. the dropdown list flashes by and the page is reloaded.
Anything you can do about this?
So Opera is moving to Webkit. Presto will be no more.
Opera gears up at 300 million users
300 million users strong, Opera moves to WebKit
Good or bad? I’m undecided.
If the great things that Opera is good at, security, customisation and innovation continue then I suppose it won’t make much difference to the normal user. At least it will bring an end to those sites that use browser sniffing to prevent Opera users using their sites properly.
Any thoughts anyone?
Hi,
If you have ccleaner and the winap2.ini file if you copy and paste the below script I wrote it will give you an option to clear all recent files including backup scripts.
CCleaner does include PowerArchiver but it is prior 2009 and doesnt include the latest versions recent history. Hense why i wrote this.

I just need a refresher on the best way to go about changing my boot up drive…
I have win7 installed on c drive and e drive but i want the e to become the c drive which will then enable me to format the larger current c drive.
can you guys give me a refresher please on the safest way to do it ?
many thanks…very late and very tired here so I thought I best ask the experts…:)
‘Lux’ you wouldn’t happen to be running ‘Opera’ 11.60 Build 1185 would you ?
curious to know if you’re encountering any page reloading issues when viewing PA forum?
on occasion for me it just reloads and displays lines of code as opposed to the correct layout but another refresh seems to cure it.
Did anyone try PA on Windows 8 yet?
Question for you guys…
I’ve never used any of the current breeds of software that enable you to install an operating system onto a virtual drive and I’m wondering if this is at all possible…
can I install vmware workstation then create a virtual drive via it and install the OS of my choice and then after a period of time if I’m satisfied with it can I then copy that OS from the virtual drive to a secondary hard drive or is that not possible?
or do I have to reinstall from scratch to secondary hard drive ?
I’m hoping to install an older OS and once it’s running as I want it I want to take an image of it using Acronis True Image…that way I can use it or store it.
I’m relying on your wealth of knowledge in this dept…:)
many thanks,
Mike.
What do you think of Vista?
-
I have had Vista installed for past 1-2 months, when we were testing PA on it. It is an latest revision - 5472.
I have to say, against popular belief and articles, 5472 is pretty fast. I didnt really notice it being slower than XP.
Of course, gotta get used to it and not all software works properly on it right now, which is why I am still using XP, but I am pretty sure I will jump to Vista as soon as official version is out.
-
Do you know if WR, eh PA, works on Vista?? :D :D
I haven’t used Vista at all, but I have been reading about it a lot. Are there any problems with PA on vista? Do we get any improvements by installing PA on Vista.

from Vista build 5472, PA works great.
Improvements are in what Vista offers - nicer interface, better filesystem that saves versions of your files (you can recover later on), etc.
All PA features work fine in Vista…

I’m not sure that Windows Vista will be worth the money to upgrade to. I have WMC 2005. My system is very stable, plays all the games I want, records the shows, makes DVDs, and allows me to do everything I want. Since I have no issues with XP WMC, I’m not sure why I should upgrade my computer to Vista?
Trying to pursade people to upgrade to Vista is going to be MS biggest challenge. Why should I get rid of something that is working so well? I went from Windows 98 that blue screened once everyt other day to XP that hasn’t crashed in months (my fault on the crash, installed the wrong drivers and created my own headaches, but the restore feature fixed the problem).
Is Vista going to be $150+ better than XP?

thats true… thing is that you get an OS when you get new PC, so thats where you will get Vista for sure…
And what if it has better recording functions (which I dont use in my XP MC, so I dont know about Vista), maybe it will be worthwhile?
Not sure, but I am pretty sure that they are mostly counting on new purchases…
-
I agree, the new computer market will be more than likely where MS gets their biggest sale. Although, if they do make big improvements with the MC sideof it, I may just have to go buy a copy. I would of never of thought that I would use the MC side of it so much, but I have come to really like it.
-
You cannot play all your games on XP. As far as I know, directX 10 will only be available on Vista.
So if there’s one reason to go to vista it’s the games.
Guido
-
So far, I haven’t found a game yet that I can’t play. The only game I’ve even been interested in lately is COD3, but it appears right now that it might be released as console only game.

Halo 2 will be vista only. No word about Crysis yet.

I never have played Halo 2.

One point to make when people rushed out to buy the first releases of windowd 98 and xp they found quickly that it didn’t live up to expectation. Not all drivers and software worked. I would advise a few years down the line to get vista. Considering that buying it would not be worth it as it needs more ram more memory and more hard drive space than say windows 98 2000 and xp.
Unless all the major sotware like office 2003 and word perfect and firefox and thunderbird and photoshop and??? many many more software runs on it than at present, it would be a major purchase for people even to buy a new computer.
I THINK MICROSOFT WILL FORCE US TO GET IT EVENTUALLY, THOUGH.
Basically i don’t want to fork out for a new computer and then the software all over again. i have invested a lot of time and money in software and to upgrade will be a huge investment.
I would go for it if i could use my existing software on it. Then again if i could why buy it, when i can do all i want at the moment.
Under the hood its just a windows update like windows 98 was to windows 95.
same goes for windows 2000 to windows xp
-
Under the hood its just a windows update like windows 98 was to windows 95.
This is the thing why you have to get vista.
2000 = windows version 5.0
XP = windows version 5.1
Vista = windows 6Vista is not an update of XP. It is a new version.
The reason for me to get vista is for the stuff under the hood. Almost everything under the hood is rewritten. Extended file system. A new driver model, so drivers cannot make Vista crash. Able to run widows as a limited user. No more kernel patching for stability. These are just a fragment of what has changed.
Guido
-
there are still going to be crashes and lock ups it happens with any computer more memory is going to be needed and less compatability with existing software. Basically i can see your point. But i can also see the point from developers will it or wont it let us do things.
Is going to be as good as it sayes. they said windows xp was good and going to change the way we work. It didn’t . Your still going to need new drivers to run old componenets and this will take time.
Will it be more stable i don’t think so. on any computer if you install software that uses the same parts at the same time will crash the system its a fact.
In time we will see if it is any better.
-
Hi folks,
I’m new to the forum and thought I would comment.
Windows Vista will not allow kernel manipulation. So all the money you have invested in security software that uses this will not work with Vista.
I can’t imagine that consumers will like forking out this kind of money and not be able to use their choice of security software. So therefore, you really don’t own the computer with that OS, Bill Gates does. Microsoft wants you to rely soley on his security software only to protect that computer.
I can see a lot of refunds being made when people purchase Vista and get it home and find out they can’t use their own choice of security.
This whole Vista thing is very dissappointing to me. Gates has all the security vendors in an uproar over this.
I’m running XP Pro and have multiple image backups. I will run it even after it’s not supported anymore because I refuse to be told what software I can use on my own computer. I’m wondering how much longer he will support XP in order to force people to Vista.
I have been looking at alternatives for when this time comes. By then I will have figured out what I’m going too and it won’t be windows unless there is a major change in Vista, but I doubt that.
Are we allowed to post links? I have some very interesting material on Vista that I think everyone should be aware of. Awarness is always better than getting short changed.

Rilla927

post your links.
microsoft basically wnat us to upgrade to just their software.
Then basically is this fair trade, or health competition? No
It basiaclly means hackers and virus makers will have a feild day as microsoft will not be able to keep up with them. It is possible to remotley disable vista from another computer via the internet without being logged into that computer. Tried it and if i can do it a proper hacker can.
Basically windows 2000 and xp are better cause they allow computer security compies to be able to write software for these computers and keep them ahead of the hackers. if you look at firefox it is better than internet explorer.
I have also been informed via a microsoft employee that eventually only special licenes will be issued to companies and if that license is not granted their software will noit run on microsoft windows.
This i’m told will stop virus getting onto the system.
It’ll mean microsoft force us to use their products and what incentive will microsft have to keep their product updated none cause no competition.
The future is either linusx or winodows xp or 2000
it is possible for other companies to do the security fixes for these systems and keep them alive long after microsft has abandoned them.

I believe it. And Gates wants us to trust is software only, he’s out of his mind.

I agree 110%.

This is not going to stop virus’s. He is opening up an epidemic of computers to be virus laden. This is going to blow up in his face.
It’ll mean microsoft force us to use their products and what incentive will microsft have to keep their product updated none cause no competition.
I agree! I don’t have that kind of trust to put into Microsoft to protect my OS. To this day he hasn’t been able to do it.
The future is either linusx or winodows xp or 2000
I have been looking at some Linux stuff myself. I think there is going to be an astronomical amount of people switching eventually, because of this.
it is possible for other companies to do the security fixes for these systems and keep them alive long after microsft has abandoned them.
Yes, you are right. I’m going to gather those links and post back. Wait until you read some of this. I almost spit my teeth out, laughing.

I don’t know about switching to Linux, but I see people not upgrading to Vista until they buy a new computer. I have four computers with XP and my folks have one with XP. I can’t find a need to upgrade any of them to Vista. Maybe I’m missing something, but all the computers we have does everything my wife, daughter, and myself need them to do. My folks computer does everything they need it to do. We have AV and firewall software installed on each. Also using a router with SPI. So far, none of the computers have had a virus. I spent a few minutes educating everyone about opening e-mail attachments and about phishing attacks. XP is very stable for us, no blue screens. XP runs all the software that we want it to run. My machine plays all the games I want. I just don’t see a need to upgrade. I keep reading articles about how Vista will improve security, but so far we have been safe with XP. Why should I switch to anything else (Vista or Linux)?
-
If I have a Volkswagen that works, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to drive a Ferrari.
I have been using vista for 1 day and I think it’s great.
Guido
-
I just don’t see a Ferria’s worth of new features. It looks more like an Ford Explorer (XP) and Ford Excursion (Vista). Both are SUVs. One may tow a little more, but not enough to justify the upgrade.
Trust me, I’m looking for a good reason to buy Vista when it comes out, but I have to get the approval from the boss (wife) and right now I can’t find a good reason yet.
I’ll keep reading and watching.
-
there is one majpr flaw with vista at the moment. One minutes software runs on it next it doesn’t.
untill they actually come out with a standard vista that can run software all the time not just when microsoft wants it then i’m not buying it.
-
RC2 is pretty nice actually… works much better than previous builds…
-
I am waiting for a few important (PA & Alcohol) pieces of software to work on Vista.
After that it’s Vista only for me. I think it works great.
Guido
-
I have used both vista and XP. Hands down I find vista to be a more capable OS. Still new it may have a hickup from time to time but the updates usually resolve this. More options, more customizability, more security and it is really really pretty.
I decided to write this post after watching “i’m a mac, I’m a PC” commercial. I feel this gives a horrible unrealistic view of vista. Before judging vista, try it! If you still don’t enjoy the environment perhaps a mac is more your thing.
-
dont b in dilemma:eek:
if u lik XP then go along wit it, dont think abt viasta…:p
if u loves vista then install it…
i think both are equall expect some features…
-
If vista was any good why are they developing windows 7 cause its like windows 95 and 98 windows 95 was revolutionary but it had loads of bugs not ironed out. Windows 98 was windows 95 with the bugs fixed. Goes to show that windows 2000 went to xp and from xp to a new operating system structure vista now vista is buggy so they are sorting the bugs and going to windows 7
windows 7 is actually vista bug fix which microsoft want to charge us for.
-
As a simple user i can say that Vista is very quick system but it need a lot of free place on pc that not everybody can provide
My wallpapers are more cooler, doubts?
