From the guys who gave us Opera comes a new browser.
A technical preview has been released which you can download from here
Chrome based but the UI is more like the old Opera with notes, bookmarks, (email coming later down the line). Basically all the things that Opera ASA told us was not possible in Opera 15+
Maybe one worth keeping an eye on, for us old Opera devotees.
I have heard many of you refer to Total Commander.
I currently use Xyplorer –- which in many ways is nice. But (a) there is almost always some glitch that causes it to crash if I use it as the default file manager, and (b) the developer’s help files are less than adequate, and the developer won’t give any help.
So I am thinking about changing.
Are you happy with it? Is it stable? Instructions clear?
I do not want cloud backup. I have a service and am happy with it.
I do not want imaging backup. Tried it and didn’t like it.
I want a program that will backup the files I specify efficiently (without insanely slowly down the system), on a schedule, and with some decent options (exact copy, plain copy, versions, etc.).
I have used a program I liked (SecondCopy) for at least a dozen years. Never thought I would change. But they are now on beta 4 on Version 9 – after starting on beta 1 some 7-8 months ago.
It is still plagued with nagging problems. I keep trying it, finally uninstall the beta and reinstalling version 8. This is getting tiresome.
It is time to look for an option.
However, I am not having any luck. I keep find online backups and imaging software. But I don’t want either.
Ideas?
I would appreciate your guidance.
Hugh
I need help to my accidentally deleted pictures from memory card. Is there any software to get back lost digital pictures from memory card?
Here’s a quick review of Opera 15 which has just been released.
It sucks.
Don’t waste your time downloading it.
Oh and it sucks.
:(
For backup my documents i use cobian backup for some years. Ones everything is set, it runs by itself and the user don’t have to worry that there will be a failure with the backup.
Are there people who uses cobian backup or is everyone using PA backup?
I don’t know if i must ask the next question in this section or in the wishlist.
Cobian backup is for sale. Is Conexware interested in the program or trying to implement the advanced option(scheduled backup parts)?
Now i’m using the standard version of PA, but scheduling the backup is the only thing that i’m not satisfied about.
I am looking for a good development tool that will help me track revisions of software I am creating, and that is web based. Just looking for suggestions on what others use.
And not one that is hosted through another solution but that I can host myself.
Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)! This means we’ve completed the product development and testing of the product and have started handing off the final code to our OEM partners. They can now begin preparing new Windows 8 PCs and devices they’ll introduce starting with General Availability. For more on RTM, I suggest reading this blog post from Steven Sinofsky on the Building Windows 8 blog.
So when will folks be able to get their hands on the new Windows 8 RTM code?
People will be able get Windows 8 starting on October 26th either by upgrading for $39.99 or on a new PC or device. And if you buy an eligible Windows 7 PC today, you will be able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 (U.S.) through the Windows Upgrade Offer.
However, we have a number of programs that provides various audiences early access to the Windows 8 RTM code to help prepare for Windows 8 as it enters the marketplace this fall:
•August 15th: Developers will be able to download the final version of Windows 8 via your MSDN subscriptions.
•August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions.
•August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization.
•August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8.
•August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8.
•September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.
More info here.
When I try to select the forum on website shown on my WP7 phone, it never shows the dropdown list, It just reloads the page.
When clicking on community. the dropdown list flashes by and the page is reloaded.
Anything you can do about this?
So Opera is moving to Webkit. Presto will be no more.
Opera gears up at 300 million users
300 million users strong, Opera moves to WebKit
Good or bad? I’m undecided.
If the great things that Opera is good at, security, customisation and innovation continue then I suppose it won’t make much difference to the normal user. At least it will bring an end to those sites that use browser sniffing to prevent Opera users using their sites properly.
Any thoughts anyone?

If you have ccleaner and the winap2.ini file if you copy and paste the below script I wrote it will give you an option to clear all recent files including backup scripts.

I just need a refresher on the best way to go about changing my boot up drive…
I have win7 installed on c drive and e drive but i want the e to become the c drive which will then enable me to format the larger current c drive.
can you guys give me a refresher please on the safest way to do it ?
many thanks…very late and very tired here so I thought I best ask the experts…:)
‘Lux’ you wouldn’t happen to be running ‘Opera’ 11.60 Build 1185 would you ?
curious to know if you’re encountering any page reloading issues when viewing PA forum?
on occasion for me it just reloads and displays lines of code as opposed to the correct layout but another refresh seems to cure it.
Did anyone try PA on Windows 8 yet?
Question for you guys…
I’ve never used any of the current breeds of software that enable you to install an operating system onto a virtual drive and I’m wondering if this is at all possible…
can I install vmware workstation then create a virtual drive via it and install the OS of my choice and then after a period of time if I’m satisfied with it can I then copy that OS from the virtual drive to a secondary hard drive or is that not possible?
or do I have to reinstall from scratch to secondary hard drive ?
I’m hoping to install an older OS and once it’s running as I want it I want to take an image of it using Acronis True Image…that way I can use it or store it.
I’m relying on your wealth of knowledge in this dept…:)
many thanks,
Mike.

I cant wait to get PS3
:-)
If you are into HD, it is way, way cheaper than anything on the market…

I have insider info on ps3 as brother in law works for sony on ps3 french lang version.
He told me it is a brilliant product. They are having great great many problams with blue ray player. Though they have to sort them out before they can release any more of the ps3. They need blue ray as the games need the disc size the blue ray has to offer.
He stated to me that the ones sold alreday mnight need to be patched over the internet.
I would hold off buying one for about 6 months he reconned untill the bugs are ironed out.
that from someone who actually works on the damed playstation.
-
all i got to say is - do you want console that costs $850 to produce or one that costs $300 to produce? :-)
-
It’s the Wii for me.
A games console for playing games on, that’s all I want. Don’t want or need an all singing, all dancing do everything that my PC can already do device.
No interest in DVD’s and films so that would be a waste as far as I’m concerned.

i was actually checking both and Wii is something I would play with my wife, but I dont see myself being interested in any of the games at all, mostly being sports games fan which i can play with friends…
Now Winning Eleven in online play… cant wait! :-).
I will probably end up buying both.

I like the Wii the most.

Nintendo had to do something, they were loosing the battle against Sony and Microsoft!, I think the Wii Deserves a trial if nothing less! and soon the competitors will copy there idea and Nintendo will loose out again.

Why wait when you can have the best?, 28 Nov 2006
Reviewer: Mr. J. R. Ashmore “lcfcblueboy” (leicester, leicestershire United Kingdom) - See all my reviewsOki used to love Playstation but have been converted to Xbox,i mean why wait for somthing to come out when you already have a machine that is just as good in the 360.
Anyone that has not seen gears of war for the 360 should take a look as the gameplay and grapics are just as good if not better than the Playstion 3.My cousin lives in japan and i have visited him very recently and i have to say the playstation 3 is sooooooooooooo overhyped,im not saying that it isnt good but you have a console thats just as good over here for gameplay and graphics.
yes its blueray and yes its high def for dvds but other than that all you have is a glorified 360.the other thing is going to be the price,i mean what the hell!!! nearly 500 pounds brand new and 70 pounds plus for a game,if you are willing to pay that take my advice and buy a pc for about the same money.
at the end of the day its a GAMES console trying to be a pc and failing in all departments -

Very true comment!!
Game consoles, phones, PDA, are all trying to become self dependant computers that allow you to use the net, play music, type notes etc…
What happend to the good old days where a game console was just that! Designed, Developed and Made to play quality games at an affordable price! nothing more nothing less…
The main thing i do like about the Xbox is Xbox Live! for when your bored of playing against the computer and fancy taking on real people from around the world!
Microsoft make a loss on there console because they know there going to make a profit in games and online!
Maybe Playstation should open there eyes and put the price down or they could be looking at a massive loss in sales.

My Wii has just arrived. :D
If I’m not around for a while it’s probably because I have done myself some sort of injury.

PlayStation 3:
great graphics; perfect gameplay (if they don’t change the controller)
XBox 360:
great graphics; horrible gameplay (unless they change the controller)
Nintendo Wii:
good graphics; perfect gameplay
I don’t care about the extra features they add to any game console, when I get a cell phone I’m interested in talking, not taking pictures.
In the end Nintendo Wii is the most inovative console but I always loved Playstation’s standards, Xbox 360 just supports great graphics and has a horrible controller (I mean look at the size of that thing), the XBox 360 is out of the question for me.
Now the decision (Nintendo Wii - PS3) depends on the gameplay cause the graphics are already good enough. I’ll just buy both when they’re cheaper. :) (and plus, Metal Gear Solid 4 will be available only on the PS3! MGS is my favorite game! Can’t wait till it comes out!). -

you simply get more.

PS3 has online service, and it is free :-).
It is not as good as xbox’s, yet, but it is… free. And also, due to more power in PS3, PS3 online games have more players in them - like GOW is limited to only 8 players while Resistance has 40 players multiplayer games.
For me, Sony did the right thing in PS3 by getting rid of extra charges, unlike MS… You can plugin your old keyboard/mouse, your external hard drive, your usb stick, your SD card, you can change its hard drive to generic notebook drive, you can install linux and be supported by sony.
None of which you can do with Xbox where you have to pay everything extra, just because it is xbox.

There’s too many internet rumours of what it is/isn’t capable of doing. Wait until E3 then we should know just how good it is.
My wife has promised me one anyway so I’m in. :D

Ok, whats the point in buying a “Game Console” when it is starting to look, feel and act like a Tablet?
i mean word?? come on! put the research and development team on improving it’s user interface, make it faster to load, save and run high spec games.
Not frack about making it do presentations…
if i want a game console PS3 Beats Xbox and Nintendo.
The sony PS3 has the best graphics card with higher resolution compared to XBOX.
The only thing the Xbox has in its favour is a unique Operating system and kinnet which is certainly the flagship of controller free gaming.
Nintendo wont go near either party for high spec gaming they will keep it for excersise and brain teasers.
What i do know… is that microsoft is in discussions with Panasonic, Sony and Samsung about intergrating the Kinnectic camera system and skype onto their televisions.
This means remote control free interface, voice activation and the ability to control your tv, browse channels all with your hands or voice.
Now thats what i want for TV.
For gaming… i want pure power and graphics.
-
@Sir:

when it is starting to look, feel and act like a Tablet? You do realise the “tablet” is the controller and not the console?
@Sir:

Strange choice. What I want from games is gameplay and that is what Nintendo are best at. ;)
As for power and graphics, if the rumours are true then the WiiU is more powerful than any other system out there.
But I’ve no knowledge of it’s final specs hence my comment about rumours.
-
Yes i know about the wii u tablet being a controller and the other features it has. :O) i had a demonstration of it at a tech show.
And… its a clever piece of kit without a doubt.
Gameplay is obvisoly very important! but i take that as standard… i wouldnt buy a game if it didnt offer me enjobable gameplay! buts the graphics and sound add to that gameplay.
Nintendo games look to old fashioned and arcady… although some of the shooting games are fun to play.
Of course the wii u will be more powerfull its newer than both xbox and ps3.
Wait until Sony and Microsoft get wind of the real specs and final public model. Then they up theirs and once again dominate the market.
As is alway’s the case with this industry.
-
@Sir:
Nintendo games look to old fashioned and arcady.
Now your just being silly.
-
It’s true, Facts are PS3 and XBOX support up to 1080p. The nintendo supports up to 480p/i!
Thats one of the reasons i purchased the nintendo wii because i fancied that feel and fun of the arcade! they even advertise that and specify on multiple sites that its perfect for arcade SEGA game stype feeling standing and shooting zombies. Not to mention mario brother games which i love.
That was something the playstation and xbox at the time and to some part now just dont deliver.
The PS3 and Xbox at the time took games to seriosly. Nintendo changed all that! and It isnt until recently that nintendo has opened the market for more games such as COD and more EA, activition games that you could only get on xbox or ps3.
But compare them side by side and i have and you can tell the different both in audio and graphics on a 1080p TV with a Optical Surround Sound System.
Does that mean the nintendo is rubbish?? god no. they never intended to make the wii a top end console they wanted it to be an affordable game console with games that enabled the player without knowlege to excersise and not sit on their bum all the time hense perfect for families and people who dont have time or money to goto the gym.
That was what they stated in many of their public speaches, The wii u follows pace but higher end spcs and more upgradability.
I look forward to it’s release and see what the real deal is. I might even buy it, but until i here my friends, family and work mates going on about how good it is it wont really interest me as a personal purchase.
However, my mrs loves all things nintendo including her 3DS… So who knows. :)
-
@Sir:
It’s true, Facts are PS3 and XBOX support up to 1080p. The nintendo supports up to 480p/i!
What the heck has that got to do with games looking (as you put it) old fashioned and arcady?
The only thing that matters is Gamplay, Gamplay, Gamplay.
-
I am saying that i enjoy two types of games which nintento and PS3 have.
For good old fashioned arcady feeling the nintendo wins hands down.
But for high detail graphics and enjoyable movie like feel to games the PS3 wins.
yes gameplay is important 1st thing that should be set.
But like i said. Good graphics and decent sound can add to that game play and enhance the feeling the gamer has further.
If crysis 3 came out on PS3 and Nintendo Wii although the game is the same the gameplay would be far more enjoyable on the PS3!! Because the detail would be allot higher, the audio would be clearer because of the audio chipset supported and that would immerse the user far more than the nintendo if they had equipment that supported it.
If you have a small tv and no surround sound system then it wouldnt matter if you had the nintendo as you wouldnt notice a difference.
There are games that i love on the nintendo which just dont feel rite on the PS3. But certain games like COD that feel better and more enjoyable on the PS3 as the detail and sound is better.
Gameplay isnt just the “game” it’s how the user interacts and play’s it and certain tech and enviroments can boost the users interaction and make it far more enjoyable.
-
@Sir:
But for high detail graphics and enjoyable movie like feel to games the PS3 wins.
Graphics don’t make a game. Never has and never will in my opinion. If they did then those of us who played on our Commodore’s & Spectrum’s 30 years ago would have given up on gaming there and then.
I still drag out my old Amiga for a game on that as they have gameplay which has stood the test of time. Not movie like graphics & sound which will be forgotten by the next release of yet another fps.
-
i broke my amiga playing so hard! there have been some great games in the past. its only in the last year nintendo and sony have started to make them available online to download.
Graphics dont make a game no… but they immerse you further into it and so does sound.
As long as the game has a good platform it will pay for itself, if they add more detail and sound it can make it more enjoyable.
so in one aspect sound and picture doesnt effect gameplay. but i deffinetly think it significantly adds to the feeling and can enhance the enjoyment further.
its a bit like watching a bluray at home it could be a great move!!! top notch acting and detail but its some how far better when watching it at the pictures with a hugh screen and 7.1 surround sound. :)
i recently went to watch star wars at the pictures… now i have the bluray at home and have watched it many times before and enjoyed it each time… but when we watched it in 3D in full surround sound it just felt rite! there were parts in the movie that felt so realistic it caused emotional reactions…
If graphics and sound wernt a major part of gameplay then game developers would have never moved forward from two green dots bobbing from one side to another to 3D hand free voice activated game stations… so its proof in the pudding.
-
@Sir:
i recently went to watch star wars at the pictures.
I’m sorry I didn’t realise, you have my deepest sympathy.
I would rather watch paint dry myself. -
ahhh your not a star war’s fan…
Well the point is still there, think of a movie you really enjoy, sit and watch it at home then goto the cinema or a friend who has a decent cinema system and watch it. Then tell us it was exactly the same experience and doesnt feel more enjoyable. :)
Because if thats the case we can save ourselves a fortune and go back to black and white TV as its the same experience after all.
-
@Sir:
ahhh your not a star war’s fan…
Nope! can’t bloody stand them.
@Sir:
Well the point is still there, think of a movie you really enjoy, sit and watch it at home then goto the cinema or a friend who has a decent cinema system and watch it. Then tell us it was exactly the same experience and doesnt feel more enjoyable. :)
Slight problem there I’m not into movies at all. I get bored stiff after about 10 minutes, switch off and do something else instead. A night in watching a movie is my idea of hell.
@Sir:Because if thats the case we can save ourselves a fortune and go back to black and white TV as its the same experience after all.
Wouldn’t matter to me I’d rather play some music. :D
-
you are a difficult one arnt you! lol.
Ok, i love music too!
So play your favourite music on a single cheap speaker or even just your TV…
Then play the same music on a stereo surround sound or something similar to a bose surround sound 5.1 or 7.1 system.
Then tell us the experience was no more enjoyable.
