Still slow in reading archive folders?
-
Hello,
I’m reffering to a quite similar problem, posted in this thread:
http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=747&highlight=slow
Although PA 2006 Beta 7 is much faster in browsing through the folder structure of an already opened archive, the opening procedure is VERY slow.
E.g.:
- one zip achive, 260 MB in size with about 14 thousand files and 620 dirs, packed with PA at a maximum compression level
WinRAR 3.51 needs about one second to read the folder structure, open it and lets you browse through folders and files whereas PA needs 137 seconds to open the same archive from exactly the same media (CD-RW)!!!
Now this is what I call slow. Imagine me, browsing through dozens of these backup files… this is getting me mad!
Can anybody reproduce this extraordinary slow initial reading of folders in an archive?
Thank you.

what happens when you copy the archive to the hard drive?
thank you!

Thank you for your reply!
Okay, just tried it again:
1. same archive on DVD-RW, antivirus disabled, drive spindown disabled
Time to open archive:
WinRAR = one second
PA = 147 seconds2. archive copied to hard drive, antivirus still disabled
Time to open archive:
WinRAR = one second
PA = 6 seconds -
so it is probably due to the way PA reads the header. We will check it out better for next release, thank you!

Thank you for your efforts!

Just to keep you up to date: the issue hasn’t changed yet.

Has this issue been adressed in the current beta release?
-> 9.60 Beta 1
I would really like to use PA again, as I have paid for it. But momentarily it really constrains my work flow. :(

Yes, No, Maybe?

Okay, tried it myself: PA still needs some time to read aka open archives whereas competing products show the content instantly. I’m tired of a product, that needs more time to open an archive than me, checking whether it is the one I’m looking for. Additionally, the German translation is still a mess (as the German translation of your homepage still is, btw).
I’m switching to a competing product, good luck.

problem is in how zip engine reads the archive, not that easily improved for us.
thank you,

I found the same issue. It takes pretty long time to open archive files. Also when it tried to compress files, especially big list of files, it takes pretty long to launch itself and to prepare the list.

not archives, specifically zip files. Other formats are much faster. Problem is same as before. Not something we can improve.
I believe upcoming 10.00 is even faster than before when it comes to browsing folders (and in many other things in general), but again, zip engine speed has not been improved.

I tested with .jar files, is it also using the same engine?
