Hi:
I have use 7-zip-ultra to archive a folder and test after achiving, and it’s alright.however,When I extract it then the folder have no files in it ,no content, then how to use 7-ultra-zip and how to extract the zip files so to ensure successfully have contents archived into the zip files ?
thanks

To save the data, can you try using 7-Zip Archiver which is downloadable from http://www.7-zip.org to extract the 7z file? It may work.

How are you extracting?
-
via explorer shell extensions
-
via PA main Gui
–- Classic View or Explorer View?
There have been problems when trying to extract folders (instead of files) using GUI Explorer view.
Note: Try PA main window in Classic View.
Then select the file(s) to be extracted. -

Thanks you.
I used main window and all the methods to extract, but because the content is empty, therefore the files will not come back.I think may be my files size is 1.4gb,too big to 7-zip,I tried 7-zip freeware, and used very long time and memory to archive until…,but found that the compressed files can not filled and burn into cd-rom(700mb capacity).(I expected it could )
I compressed it into mutiple files use fastest method so thaT I can burn it into cd rom.ok NOW.thanks for your help:Ricco and TBGBe.

Do you mean the 7z file is empty - so something went wrong with the compression?
@j5slng2d:I think may be my files size is 1.4gb,too big to 7-zip
No, apparently 1000GB is ok - but I don’t know anyone who has tested this :D
I have done 14GB with no problems.

Sorry, I don’t understand what you are saying - do you simply mean that the 7z archive file created was larger than 700MB?
You are correct, 7z format is very slow and very memory intensive - compared to the other formats.

Yes, if you need a limited size, multiple files (called spanning) is the way to go.
Glad you figured it out.
@j5slng2d:thanks for your help:Ricco and TBGBe.
You are welcome.
You might be interested in testing Zip format for archiving to CD. It is a lot quicker and also supports spanning. Just remember to activate both controls
- “Use Deflate64”
- “Make Large ZIP File (over 4 GB)”
If you backup to CD regularly, also look into PowerArchiver Tools / Backup Express Lite and Options / Configuration / Compression profiles.

ans:Yes.
I cannot compress my files in 7z?They are iso, img, cue, etc.Does this format have problems causing archiving problems?
I compress them from context menus “compress to 7-zip+option”
in option window . -

We need to be careful with terminology here…
Compress - to reduce in size.
Archive - the file created as a result of compressing.ISO files do not compress very well as they are already a type of archive.
However, a 7z archive file can be created which contains one or more iso files. So using 7z on a single file “example.iso” will produce an archive “example.7z”.
However, “example.7z” will be almost the same size as “example.iso” even using ultra.
Doing a quick test -
example.iso 437 340 160 bytes
example.7z 425 541 403 bytes
example.zip 425 994 116 bytes /just for comparison/So, there is a “problem” in terms of compressing, but there should not be a “problem” in terms of archiving.

Thanks you.
I done it now.(compress in 7-zip-ultra)you are right ,the size is not very much different than original size.

I’ve had numerous problems with PowerArchiver (even in the latest build) in regards to 7-Zip. You can’t compress folders with LOTS of files (many thousands) and also, when extracting 7-Zip files, PowerArchiver just quits with no error whatsoever.
I have raised these issues before, but like always, nothing ever gets done about this. I now just use the freeware 7-Zip utility. Its smaller, and much quicker, and actually does the job.

Problem was in older 7zip dll we are using. New 7zip dll will be featured in PA 9.5. Other than that, there is no fix for 7zip issues that you have experienced.
thanks,

I see. Well, at least now you guys have acknowledged the problems.
When are we expecting PA 9.5 anyways? And what other new features will it have?

this has been written at least ten times in these forums, in other threads :-).
As to the 9.5 features, check them out when beta comes out. -

As to the 9.5 features, check them out when beta comes out.Well, maybe so, but when I first reported this problem, you guys wouldn’t believe me. Check out http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=437. You even said you tested it, and it was fine. Now when did you discover that problem yourself?
Yeah, I will make sure I try the beta when it comes out. Any rough time for when that will be out?

We were never able to reproduce your exact issue, but were able to reproduce issue from above after someone gave us enough information to reproduce it.
There was never problem of believing you or not, but sometimes without very detailed info we can not reporoduce the problem. In this case, issue was not the same on every computer so it was very hard to reproduce. If you check that thread, you can see that I have asked additional questions about the issue that you did not answer.
In any case, after someone else reported some other issue, we got enough info to have exactly the same configuration and reproduce the issue.
So, not to beat the dead horse, just wait few more days and check it out…

Yeah, no worries. I’ll check it out when its available and let you guys know.
PS: Speaking of memory problems, I did go in and change the dictionary size and other optios to use as much memory as possible to get the smallest file size. That might have something to do with it maybe???
Anways, can’t wait for 9.5.
What else is new in it btw?
