PA just crashes
-
I have a directory with a VMWare virtual machine in it. There are four files, three of them just a few KB big, but the fourth is about 12GB. I right-click that directory and select “Compress to ZIP + Options…” from the context menu. In the options dialog, I set the ZIP format with “Super fast” compression. I set multiple disk spanning to “Custom” and enter a maximum volume size of 4500000 kBytes. No other changes to the default settings. When I hit the “Add” button to start the process, PowerArchiver crashes immediately without any further information.

Update: I just tried, for the fun of it, to create the zip file without any spanning, but it doesn’t change anything. What’s wrong with wanting to compress a 12 GB file?

So you did NOT activate the option “Make Large Zip File” - I would try this first.

Whoa, now that’s a good hint :-) I didn’t notice there was such an option! I selected it now and the process seems to be running. Mea culpa…
Now, in the hope that a programmer or similar is reading: Why on earth is there such an option? Couldn’t the program check for itself whether the size of the archive is too large for the “normal” case under 4GB? And shouldn’t there be some kind of notification, instead of the silent crash?
Thanks a lot, Terry!

Hi Terry,
it should not crash anyway - option is there because different ZIP format is used for over 4GB files. In our future release, this option will be default because by now everyone has an archiver that can open these large files (which was not the case few years ago).
thanks,

Rather than create a new thread :p
Not yet the default setting in 9.5 - so can we have a hint as to which “future release” this will be in? -
Hmm, just noticed this post

@spwolf:no, option is automatically enabled now… pa write 2.04g header if the zip being created ends up less than 4GB or 65,555 files
-
is it a “bug” that the flag “Make Large Zip” is not activated by default in the Add screen?
-
is it a bug that Help File still states that “If you are compressing more than 4 GB of data or 65,555 files, you must check this option.” ?

neither, once you do clean install, this option should be set by default. In any case, Help correctly states that it needs to be checked.

Well it isn’t
As I upgraded from BETA, I did perform a clean install - I think.
Uninstall BETA - reboot - delete PA folder - Install pa 9.5.

No. if it is active by default then it does not need to be checked. In fact if the check is done by PA, it should be removed/deleted from options altogether as it no longer has any meaning.

I will check it out - it is still an checkbox option, it was not moved to mandatory option, yet.
thanks,

it is now.

This is much simpler now.
Option flag and Help text have both been removed :D -
