Cannot extract archives containing filenames with questionmarks
-
I just downloaded the mightily useful Style Master podGuide, which provide a ZIP file full of ipod note files.
Unfortunately, this zip file has filenames with questionmarks [?] in them. Attempting extraction presents this error:
–-------------------------
PowerArchiverError creating destination file “Extracting: C:\Documents and Settings\Brett\Desktop\Style Master CSS Guide\2. Introduction.DS_Store”. Check that file is not in use.
OK
Which is weird, because that’s not the file it’s having problems with.
I believe the ZIP file must have been made on a Macintosh.
Right-click and renaming the files to remove the questionmarks and attempting extraction works.
or something… -

This is not a PowerArchiver fault - it is a Windows restriction.
Using windows, filenames may not have use any of these characters:-
\ / : * ? " < > |Edit: Rereading your post - you may know this already, sorry.
Whether PA should have an option to replace the invalid characters, I think this would have to be done in the DynaZip libraries not in PA itself. -
This might be a dumb question but can’t you just rename the zip file before extracting?

The problem is with the names of the files/folders INSIDE the zip, not the name of the zip file itself. :p
Edit : DynaZip library is third party, not PA

Hi,
You could rename the files inside of zip file that cause Windows file system issues.
We could create some check if filenames have any “special” characters that are not allowed but I could see some serious performance issues there in case when archive has thousands of files. As long as you are not doing this on daily basis, it would be far easier to simply rename the files in question :-).
thanks,
