    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

BETA PowerArchive 22.00.11 - Windows 11 Context Menu duplicated/additional tier
    TheAndyMacT

The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

Bug extracting from ZIP etc using Extract here with PA 22.00.09
    Brian GregoryB

    Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.

      Here’s my problem with Powerarchiver:

I bought powerarchiver, only through this
for me serious bug it is almost useless
for me and i hope they get the bug fixed quickly!
this one seems to exist already for a longer time!

When I compress or decompress certain files (in PA format)
does not compress or decompress any further, but stops
without error message. I found out the problem
and isolated, this happens with heavily interlaced
directories, or for files whose file name is too long.
Windows support for long file names is
although switched on but powerarchiver does not compress
      Files with long file names.
Try this! Nest a file with long
Names times 4-5 times in different folders, powerarchiver will
not be able to compress or decompress this!

Thank you all for your effort and for tackling the problem and trying to solve it! I think this is great and very nice of you all :) so you have a loyal customer, I wanted to buy the Powerarchiver Toolbox anyway, I am a very big fan of this great program! Many thanks again to all of you :)

        @Brian Gregory
Yes I have indeed tried to use the release version, but there the same error occurs, unfortunately also. But of course I would like to help you to find certain bugs in the program, isolate them and fix them, I like to do this very much, also the 2021 version is still a tick better, because for example the compression speed was optimized for ZIPX, this is of course a great advantage … I digress, sorry, I don’t want to go too much into offtopic, sorry for that …

I was very, very happy to help you, because I am a big fan of this program, it is very useful for me! I like it very much to be able to report bugs, which helps the program to get better and grow.

It is very nice and I would like to thank you all very much and wish you all a pleasant afternoon.

Please stay healthy, we all live in very hard times!

All the best and nice, best wishes!

Are we talking long, exceptionally long or really ludicrously long?
I think Windows itself will start to do rather weird things if the total length of the complete path is over about 256.

            Hi @Konglomat

Yes, there are limits on character size in Windows. However, lets check if PA is performing correctly.
Could you post and/or send us the folder/filename structure you are compressing?
We will test with the exact same character size.

            Thanks!

I don’t know exactly how they define a “ridiculous path length”, but yes, I think the path length is ridiculous :)

Yes, any other compression program, and I mean direct competitors, can compress and decompress this path length without a single grumble, even for free, which is a pity, because powerarchiver is not one of the cheapest compression software.

This is a path length that cannot be compressed, there are subfolders per subfolder, but they are two folders shorter.

I find this unfortunately very unfortunate, I have also tried in Windows via Group Policy and with the Registry Editor to activate the support of Windows for long paths, unfortunately without success, even at the command prompt, this makes no difference.

Here is a typical path in the as an example, the names do not match with my paths, but the path length is correct from the characters, contained are only PDF files, quite a lot of them…the names of the files are different between 35-47 characters long, it can’t be because of windows, because for example 7zip,rar etc compresses and decompresses this without problems.

I did a little test with that path in a PA file and a bunch of PDFs and for me it created the PA file just fine but I see weird scrambling of the paths when extracting in ways reminiscent of this bug I reported before:
                https://forums.powerarchiver.com/topic/6239/

Have you tried going back to the release version rather than using this preview version?

                  thanks for the information everyone

I setup the exact same folder structure as in @Konglomat 's example, and compressed a PDF file with 47 characters in the file name and was not able to extract it via PowerArchiver.
We have logged this in for fixing.

                  thanks again for the help!
