Hello,

I registered on the forum to report a couple of problems I’ve been having with Powerarchiver 2012 Professional.

I am glad to see that the first problem has already been taken care of, namely, the hanging of PASTARTER.EXE introduced with 13.01.03 - fixed in 13.01.04.

The second problem is high CPU usage when using “FTP It…” shell extension. I made a few PA backup scripts which make encrypted 7z archives, copy these archives to two other locations (nice feature), and then FTP these archives to a remote FTP server (another nice feature). All is well, with regard to CPU usage, when PABackup.exe is doing the FTP file transfer, but when I right-click a file and click an FTP profile the CPU usage of POWERARC.EXE doing the file transfer goes way up - maxing out a core if I set process affinity to just one core. I cannot tell you when this problem started since I have not been using this feature for long, and I only noticed this summer due to high revving CPU fan.

Hopefuly this is something that can be fixed in a future release.

Yes, the upload always finishes ok. Process Explorer shows a high cycles delta at offset 0x875470, if that is of any help.

System info: Windows 7 Pro, Core i5 750, 8GB RAM, latest NIC driver
Antivirus is Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 (happened also with 2012). I think I can exclude the antivirus/firewall as the culprit since all Conexware programs are in the trusted group and yet pabackup.exe and powerarc.exe behave differenty doing FTP.

Hi,

I’m a new user of PowerArchiver and I’m experiencing this too however I’m not activating any extensions - I performed a clean install on two computers, and both frequently go to 50 - 51% CPU usage. Windows 8 on both machines.

Any suggestions?

disable pa starter from starting, it is issue that was solved in last release. Ctrl-alt-del and kill pastarter.exe process.

pastarter was not compatible with win8 so we had to rewrite it completely. You can disable its startup in Options> Configuration> PA Queue.

Sooo, is there a chance of this ever getting fixed? I just tried with 15.0.35 and the same problem is present, as always. FTP it… shell extension maxes out a core. Shame, such a nice little feature but not really usable for large files, mostly for power issues.

I have ample CPU, so it does not create a problem for me.

I can verify CPU usage spikes (goes from 1-2% to 25%).

With FileZilla, it never moves my CPU about 2%.

I think, though, that the problem is more general than FTP. Just compressing a folder from the shell jacks my CPU up to almost 25%.

And . . . Compressing a folder from within the PA main window gets the CPU to 29%! Maybe it is the nature of multi-core compression. Not sure.

there was a specific problem with ftp where cpu would spike with no reason.
For ZIP compression, it is best to use all of the cpu :-)

Yes, compression will do that to a cpu ;) But we are talking about ftp file transfers here. Something which should not task a cpu so much.
