    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

BETA PowerArchive 22.00.11 - Windows 11 Context Menu duplicated/additional tier
    TheAndyMacT

The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

    This can’t be right!

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

    Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.

If I copy a PowerArchiver 2012 to a shared network folder (e.g. \LOCAL-WEB\Junk) and then extract it (to the same shared folder) I get a “User Account Control” dialog asking “Do you want this program to make changes to this computer?”. Is this the expected behaviour?

Just to make sure, you have an archive on a shared folder and when you extract it to that same folder, you get the UAC dialog?

Are you extracting via right click options?

        Thanks

what happens when you copy and past something there in the Explorer, do you get UAC as well?

I can confirm that this happens for me as well.

I have Windows 8 Enterprise x64 with PowerArchiver 2012 (newest build).

7zip extracts any archive to a mapped or direct-linked share w/o invoking UAC. PA2012, on the other hand, shows errors during the extraction process. I have attempted to extract files straight to a shared folder & drag-drop to the same folder. Both get the UAC prompt & then give an error that I don’t have the correct permissions. I have verified that I have total access to these folders w/o any need for admin privileges or UAC-elevated admin access.

If you would like me to post screenshots, I can.

              what format?

drag and drop copies files via Windows Copy function to those folders, are you sure that 7zip actually extracts those files properly there? Since with drag and drop, it is Windows doing copying and you should see Windows native dialogue, right?

                ZIP

7zip works with both methods. PA2012 gives an error when it attempts to temporarily extract to my user profile temp folder. I’ve tried the Local/Temp & LocalLow/Temp just to make sure it didn’t have anything to do with UAC privilege level. The native Windows copy function & TeraCopy aren’t invoked whatsoever since PA2012 errors out on all counts regardless unfortunately.

in any case, it seems that in your case, it is problem with extracting that ZIP, no matter where, not a problem with extracting to network.

how big is the file? I am assuming it is just that file that is creating problems? Other zips work fine?

Well… I tried extracting to a shared folder that has the modify permission as Authenticated User in addition to System & Administrators. This time it worked.

Possible UAC issue on an admin account when extracting to folders that don’t have a broader permission set?

It’s because you are confused. :P

It only works on folders that have “Authenticated Users” or “Domain Users” with at least the modify or write permission. It doesn’t work with folders that my own account or administrator accounts with full control permissions have access to.

maybe Antivirus? What AV do you have?

Otherwise did it work before and stopped working now or?

In general PA does not handle permissions at all, it uses Windows functions. Meaning something is not letting it work with files properly. Maybe you have set it to run under another user or something similar, some compatibility options?

If I understood correctly, it wont even extract files to your desktop? Thats not an option :-). Something is wrong.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.

Alright… I found out that a non-media related archive can extract to anywhere with PA2012.

The Desktop is a viable extraction point if media isn’t in the archive. I’m quite unsure why this is occurring.

Permission errors w/ UAC still occur when SEP is disabled completely.

try uninstalling PA, restarting and installing again… if thats not it (some custom setting in Windows for pa.exe), then it is Antivirus blocking extraction and PA thinking it is due to permissions.

when I changed accounts (well Win8 installation), it asked me if I want to make folders readable by changing permissions and voila, Win8 did it all for me… it might have been really fast due to the SSD.

btw, did you try using ICACLS for changing permissions via CL?
                                                ICACLS “.” /grant “User”:F

would make it change perssions to full for user named User.
