When you perform a new backup …ie i have created a backup of documents. Over the next week I have added and subtracted from that folder. When I perform a back up a week later… does PA overwrite the entire file or does it just add and subtract what ever was added or subtracted.

is there a setting I can use to just back up the files that have changed?

That would depend on the backup type.

From the help file…

“Backup Type” - there are several different backup types you can use:
“Normal” - Performs classic backup without influencing archive attributes. All selected
files are added to the backup.
“Full” - Performs classic backup and resets archive attribute. All selected files
are added to the backup.
“Incremental” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set and after backup resets
their archive attribute. This mode is suitable for backing up only changed files.
“Differential” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set but does not reset their
archive attribute after backup.

Personally I just use normal backup.

I would guess that incremental or differential would fill your needs.

I read that in the help manual but to be honest and sound like a dumb a–

In plain english … how is each of them different … ie … what happens when you use normal and why do you choose to use it.

It creates a full back up every time and I always have a month of past backups sitting there, so if I accidentally delete something then it’s not hard for me to get it back.

I make disk images too so I’m well covered anyway.

The Operating system maintains four “attributes” for each file. PowerArchiver uses the “archive” attribute.

When a file is created, this attribute is SET.
When a file is changed it is also SET.
When a file is backed up, it is (usually) RESET.

So :-

“Normal” - Performs classic backup without influencing archive attributes. All selected files are added to the backup.

• the attribrute is not changed.

“Full” - Performs classic backup and resets archive attribute. All selected files are added to the backup.

• the attribute is RESET after backup.

“Incremental” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set and after backup resets their archive attribute. This mode is suitable for backing up only changed files.

• ONLY files with attribute SET are backed up. attribute is then RESET.

“Differential” - Backups only files that have archive attribute set but does not reset their archive attribute after backup.

• ONLY files with attribute SET are backed up, attribute is not RESET (so remains SET).
