Trouble opening .tar.gz file

I’m running PA 11.50.49 and I am having trouble opening a .tar.gz file that I got from the following URL:
http://www.annexia.org/_file/c2lib-1.4.2.tar.gz
No error or anything; it just doesn’t present me with the contents (except in the preview window - I can see the files inside, but I can’t do anything with them from the preview window).
The 7-Zip File Manager does not have any trouble with the archive. I’m wondering if this is a problem in PA RC (or beta or whatever 11.50.49 is) or if I have some configuration issue.
WinXP Pro 64-bit Edition

I tested it in vista 32 bit and had the same problem…it doesn’t display any files but I converted it to a zip file and found 231 files in it.
Windows 10 Pro x64
Intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.20GHz
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 -
Shell / Test reports “All OK”. :confused:
However, as this is in PACL forum :)
PAEXT (Beta 6) also has problems - loops with
“ERROR: No TAR file inside. Probably corrupted GZIP file” -
it doesnt list in main PA, wrote it in, thanks.

There’s something wrong with that file. For a start it’s about 6 times bigger than you’d expect for the files inside it.
However I agree it would be nice if the different parts of PowerArchiver were more consistent in how they interpreted it.

You’re right - the file is really just a TAR file. If I rename it such that the extension is just “.tar” instead of “.tar.gz”, PA handles it fine.
I wonder if it’s reasonable to ask PA to try and be a little bit forgiving when opening TAR/GZip files. It’s true that the file name is lying to PA so it seems unfair to tag this as a PA bug, but 7-Zip had no trouble figuring it out.
I don’t have a large sample size, but it seems like a fair percentage of tar/gzip files I come across on the Internet have a one problem or another (I’ve posted here a couple times over the years about them). Once again, this isn’t PA’s fault, but it might be nice to put enough smarts into PA to deal with these kinds of oddities - if possible.

I’ve run into this annoyance yet again (http://www.math.sci.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/%7Em-mat/MT/MT2002/CODES/mt19937ar.tgz), so I’d like to ask again if PA can accommodate these misnamed tar files?
I know it’s not PA’s error, but if PA handled this problem seamlessly, it would let me avoid being irritated every once in a while.

I can open that file both via explorer shell and from within PA :confused:

Are you running IE? I’m at work right now, and just tried it using IE7 on WinXP Pro x64. Even though the link has a .tgz extension in it, IE7 saved the download with a .tar extension and PA opened it up fine.
At home yesterday I was using Firefox 3.x (not sure what exact version) and it downloaded the file with a .tgz extension, causing confusion for PA. For some reason this kind of incorrect extension confusion seems to be common with .tar/.tgz/.gz files I come across on the Internet (which thankfully isn’t all too often).
I’ll try it again at home to make sure it wasn’t something I did.

No - I used Opera.
Downloaded same as your Firefox ( .tgz) but PA had no problems for me.
