Frustrated with 2010
-
First of all I know that no question is a stupid question…but boy do I feel stupid.
Since I’ve updated to 2010 ver 11.50.30 (using zip) I’m having difficulty doing backups. The scripts I have used forever no longer works. Help menu says that I can give the backups whatever name I want, but the only backup name that will work is PowerArchiver backup_.
What am I doing wrong? I’m probably not giving enough info here, please let me know what you need to know.
I’ll be more than greatful for your help!

Is the problem only with old scripts - if you create a new script does that work OK?
@mentorcaptl:Help menu says that I can give the backups whatever name I want, but the only backup name that will work is PowerArchiver backup_.
Is that the name of the script or the name of the created backup?
What is your operating system?

please attach your pbs script here (you need to zip it first), and explain how are you trying to change the name for the backup?
On first screen, you can change the name of the backup, on 2nd screen, you select location of the backup…. maybe thats the issue? I doubt it since it was same in PA 2010, but i have to ask.
thanks!

I got it to work over the weekend and of course I messed with the b/u script again because I wanted to change the name of the saved b/u file, so now I can’t get it to work again unless I force a b/u.

First screen says select Backup Archive and it defaults to PowerArchiver backup.zip. I would like this to say Mentor daily server backup. When I use the Mentor file name it will not back up. Next screen I’m directing it to where we save our daily backups. We do encrypt with PK v2.04g and a password, but I removed the password from the attached file.
There is a zip file in my Documents and Settings\My Documents\Backups\PowerArchiver Backup.zip that is 1kb.
I also tried to create a new archive with the name Mentor daily server backup and all that happened was a backup was created. I have also tried creating a new script as well.
I feel so incredibly lost! Thank you for your help, it is truly appreciated.

ok, is the problem that PA will not rename old backup files? because if you change backup name, it will only change future backup filename, not previous one…. ?

No, it will not run the backup at all
-
so you basically rename the backup and then when you click to run the backup, what happens?
Is it possible that you dont have write priviledges to that folder?
What if you try to save backup to your my documents folder or desktop - does it work then?
thanks

When I click to run the backup to run manually it will start to run, but not add files. For 3 minutes now it shows b/u status with nothing going on and no b/u file created. Also, it will not run automatically.
Ooops, I take that back…it has been 8 minutes since I started the manual back up and it is now compressing files.
-
aha… so how many files are you compressing? is that an network drive that you are compressing from?

Yes it is a network drive
5.93GB
27,750 files
5,128 folders -
it is slower since it has to look through network folder for 28,000 files.
but it works, right or?
It should be slightly faster or a lot faster in beta 2 (didnt test it on network drive, but on local drive, instead of 10 seconds, file list building takes 1 second). It might still be slow on network drive since it has to take info from the network…

Beta 2 is out, please check it out via web update or download page.
It will be interesting to see if it gets faster for network backups!
thanks

I have downloaded Beta 2 and have scheduled an auto backup to start shortly. I will let you know if it starts and is successful. crossing fingers:eek:

I GIVE UP!!! Why won’t this back up start automatically? I have it scheduled. Maybe I should go back to 2009? How would I go about doing that?

wait, so problem is that your backup does not start automatically?
You need to decide what the issue is :-).
For windows scheduler backup, you need to check schedule and make sure login/password is properly entered, or else Windows Scheduler will not start the schedule.

I have 2 issues going on. One that I cannot name the backup what I want to name it unless I rename after the b/u is complete and two is, it will not run automatically. I have login/password properly entered, etc. I will try again today :-S

One issue fixed (auto backups), now onto the naming issue. I will test that next. Sometimes a fresh mind helps

ok :-)
what happened with slow startup of backup due to the network? Is it faster in b2?

Yes, faster in b2 :-)

Crossing fingers PA has auto started and is compressing under the file name I gave instead of default.
I said last week I felt stupid…this just justifies it. :-)

I have accomplished success. Thank you all for listening to my rants.
The solution to the 2nd issue (not doing auto backups) was the missing password under scheduling in Windows. As many times as I had entered it, I must have been doing it wrong.
Thanks again for all your time and help!
