Extracting EXE Files with 2009
-
Ok…with PA2007 I could extract EXE files with the shell extension "extract to (etc)…) However, after going to 2009 I’m no long able to. Is there a plugin or something that is required for this now? There are a lot of EXE files (for example nVidia drivers and Dell drivers) that I prefer to extract then install as I store the extracted directory on my server for future install or if needed for another machine.

Nvidia - See http://www.powerarchiver.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3403
Not all "exe"s are the same.
-
Yes I saw that after I had posted. The search feature in these threads doesn’t work in some locations on this site otherwise I was trying to find to see if someone else had posted.
And yes I realize not all EXE files are built the same; however, older versions of PA have been able to extract the Dell and nVidia drivers, but no longer since the 2009 version. I’ve been an avid user of PowerArchiver and as a tech for the last 10 years have recommended PA for at least the last what 6 to 8 years that it’s been known. I just want to know why it no longer shows as a shell extension when you right click. Sure I can do it the hard way by opening PA then opening the file in there but that’s just a pain when before right click and bamb.
-
… however, older versions of PA have been able to extract the Dell and nVidia drivers,
And PA 2009 can extract from older NVIDIA drivers
e.g. 93.71_forceware; 175.19_geforce; WDM_A403So maybe they (NVIDIA etc) have also changed how these files are created

“Sure I can do it the hard way by opening PA then opening the file in there but that’s just a pain when before right click and bamb.”
This can still be done (the last part of my last post) so no they haven’t changed.
-
I did see that! The auto-detection for shell extensions is not the same as actually extracting.
-
So…my question is where did this feature go as if I revert back to the older version I can extract these files by right clicking where now I cannot. This is my whole point in this that this is no longer available in the latest version (2009), but still works in the older versions when reinstalling those.

who knows, things are constantly being changed and of course, when you change something, possible issues might have been introduced… We will have this one in mind for next minor update!

Yes and no. I’m still not able to extract via right click with nVidia drivers. I was able to extract Dell drivers as well as a couple others, but not any nVidia drivers from their downloads site. I can still open it from within PA and extract it, but not via the right click as I can and still can with PA2007 (10.22).

Btw I hope this isn’t a final release as since I’ve installed this I’ve had many explorer issues and when I shutdown I get many run time errors. Going to uninstall for the time being, but thanks for looking at this topic!
-
Btw I would be a bit more precise in the exact error messages; however, each time it’s been on shutdown so it’s a bit hard to screenshot the error messages unless I had a digital camera next to me. Also upon booting up each time my error even logs were cleared, so I wasn’t even able to grab the event logs for the Explorer errors or the Runtime messages.

what version of windows are you using? 32bit or 64bit?
-
Vista SP1 64bit
-
works apsolutly perfect here with that exe… can you send your PA registry key to support at conexware . com, zipped (important), and we will try with your settings.
Can anyone else reproduce same issue with 64bit? It is important since we have to launch new version soon… thanks!
-
Sorry…I wasn’t thinking yet this morning. It was on a XPSP3 32bit machine. Didn’t get around to installing it on my other box yet which has Vista SP1 64bit. When I installed it I installed it on top of the version I already had installed which was the 11.0.3 version. I can attempt another reinstall of the latest version later by uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that works. Will let you know the results later.
-
we tried on XP 32bit, Vista 32bit, Vista 64 bit and all worked fine?

Just tried and no problems here
- XPSP3 (32bit)
- Nvidia driver from other thread(178.24_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql.exe)
Upgraded PA 11.00.78 -> 11.01.03 -> 11.02.01
Checked Shell options (extract) correct with each version. No problems reported on shutdown (restart).

No change here, still unable to extract the nvidia .exe via right click. (installed on two vista 64bit machines)

can you check Config> Misc> Speed> Check for CAB SFX files? Is that option on?
If it is, then did you restart your computer after latest update so shell extensions can be replaced?
thanks

Yes it’s on, and yes I restarted. I am going to uninstall/reinstall and see what happens.

One more thing I’ve noticed is that when right clicking EXE files on a networked share it takes anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds for the right click to display any options. This is on my Vista SP1 64 bit box. This was not taking this long before the 11.02 version.
Btw I’ve reinstalled on XP after uninstalling and so far I haven’t received any issues.
-
An example file which I wouldn’t mind sending over although it was purchased software is a download version of Quicken. This one for example when right clicking the EXE extractable file take somewhere of at least 30 seconds before it finally gives me options. Before the 11.02 this did not happen. When I disable the shell integration bamb works just peachy.

I’ve noticed the same using Vista 64.

if an sfx does not work, you need to send us an link to it so we can check.
Problem with right click is that it takes time for it to read end of SFX file. Thats why option is there to disable it.

(ie original link for for 17xx drivers)

Thank you for the execellent service. :)

this should work in 11.02… they changed their sfx to zip in newer version, and it seems to be one with a lot of header info too… in any case, it should work now and quickly…

Yes. Orginally I installed the new version over the old. Today I uninstalled, restarted, installed and restarted again, but unfortunately I have the same result. I am using Vista 64, (with UAC disabled) maybe that’s the problem.
