Rebooting after Upgrades
-
Why is it always necessary to reboot after upgrading, even if there are no instances running?
-
I have always thought it was because of the “Explorer Shell” integration dll.
This file needs to be replaced/updated. -
yep… As long as if you used explorer shell (right clicked on the file), it will need to reboot in order to change shell extensions…
-
I can name at least one other very popular archiving program that uses DLL based shell extensions that I practically never have to reboot when installing/upgrading.
Not trying to rub it in, but it appears its certainly possible on a technical level to do it w/out the reboot.

that can be only because they did not update shell extensions in that update. Otherwise, all system dll’s that are exclusivly in use by Windows, can not be replaced until reboot, if they have been used.

would it be the same to kill / restart explorer.exe ?
