    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    TheAndyMacT

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

BETA PowerArchive 22.00.11 - Windows 11 Context Menu duplicated/additional tier
    TheAndyMacT

The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !

The first time PA loads, either directly (I load the program) or via a right-click action seems to be quite long. Long enough for me to think I must have done something wrong (e.g. not double-clicked fast enough) so I do it again and end up with two or more instances. PA 2012 was definitely faster in loading.

I’ve been working on the 2013 version since alpha on Windows XP, 7 and 8 all different specs and brands, I can’t say i’ve noticed any such delay.

          Certainly sounds odd!

Have you tried Uninstalling PowerArchiver, and installing from scratch and see if it continues to show the same issue?

            Hi,

I did install and uninstall anyway. The installer seems to do an uninstall too rather than an install over the top.

OS Win 7 x64, AV is ESET v6. I have just added PA as an exclusion to my AV and startup seemed faster. I’ll keep an eye on this.

            Thanks Guys,

was it like 0.5s slower than now, or 5s slower?

if it is substantially slower, we can maybe contact ESET and see about them “fixing” it in the future.

With Webroot, it takes 2 to 2½ seconds, at least if PA Starter is already loaded.

there is no difference between 8 and 8.1 in loading, i run 8.1 personally… however what I had happen with 8.1 is itunes loading one cpu core to 100% in the background due to some bug of theirs, i had to uninstall it. If it is not something like that, then it could be AV… but otherwise, there is no difference when it comes to different Windows, compared to older version.

As to the cab, update that thread… i don’t see what we can do though, it is due to Windows apparently, not us. For some reason their cabinet.dll wont work for your purpose in Windows x64.

that would be great… last time I think ESET did something similar back in 2006 or so, and when we reported it, they managed to “fix” it.

Hmm. First run with PA NOT exceluded in ESET -24 secs (the sort of long loads I have been experiencing.
Next run with ESET exceluded from testing was 3 secs. From then on, ALL loads were 3 secs whether excluded or not in ESET. I have noticed the long loads in the past. PC completely rebooted between PA load tests.

Do you gave a debug tracing build I can run to provide further info?

we cant debug anything on our side - ESET checks it first time, and after that result is cached.

are you sure it happened all the time?
It seems to take long time once, then it stores its crc and never checks it again.

but yeah, if you run it first time, it seems like everything gets blocked and nod32 takes up 60%-70% of cpu.

Since I have plenty of various pa.exe’s on my computer, i could easily reproduce this with Nod32… it is very very slow. I have no idea how AVs really work and what they do, but it seemed as if was checking something online.

In any case, I have reported this to Nod32 team. I hope they fix it. While it doesnt happen after the first time (at least it is not super slow), it looks pretty bad the first time you run it. People will think it is due to PowerArchiver even though we have nothing to do with it.

Sorry to jump in on my first post, I have similar problems with very slow startup (20-30 secs) of PowerAchiver, after that first start it’s fine. It occurs on both of my PC’s using XP and Win7 64bit which both have ESET installed.
Since reading this post I have emailed ESET support (been annoying at times).

                                                Peter

                                                  Hi again

Good support from ESET (replied quick)
added the exclusion for PA and it works!.
                                                  which I added C:\Program Files\PowerArchiver*.*

It is vital to have the wildcards at the end. e.g. c:\test*.*

Hope this solves some issues relating to slow startup (first time start)
for some as it fixed my problem. It was so annoying at times clicking to open
a file and it would just hang. By that time you already clicked on it 2 to 3 times which then ran multiple instances of PA.

we will keep emailing them to add new version to their whitelist so you dont have to… it is very annoying, most people wont know to do 11. steps required.

I have to say no p[erformance issues with ESET other than this one. Computer just as fast, if not moreso than Kaspersky - left Kaspersky as their mods arrogant and power mad in the extreme as well as being often wrong.

i am so happy I dont use any :-).

For me NOD32 was pretty intrusive (compared to nothing)… I have had BD 2013 for testing, as we sell it, and it wasnt as intrusive, but as I am my own master on my own computer, i dont use any AVs in general (i dont download exe’s from internet, except major applications).

I guess it is not easy for them to fight off all the evil :-)

OT: I wish I had the cajones to run without AV. I am very naughty on the internet and do not get much of a peep from my AVs. I am much more worried about rogue web sites that infect PCs. Infected exe’s are sooo yesterday LOL.

Both KAV and ESET do not slow down the machine at all, but KAV would not accept exceptions without nagging about them. No probs with ESET. I do not like the AVs whose interfaces have gaudy colours and do not allow detailed configuration - i.e. they are designed for noobs.

I removed the exclusion from ESET and had to wait approx 15-20 secs for the window to appear. Has this latest version been (supposedly) whitelisted yet?
