    News/Update on PowerArchiver/Connexion in 2024
    T

Hi everyone, some good news about PowerArchiver… I’ve managed to get in touch with the original developer of PowerArchiver, Ivan Petrovic, and he has confirmed that the product is not dead or abandoned, in fact it is still very much alive! There has been a hiatus over the past months for various reasons, but that we should expect to see stuff coming through in the coming months (hopefully the next 2 months).

The Windows 11 context menu for PowerArchiver on normal files (to be compressed, etc.) is now showing multiple tiers with two identical menus. See attached captures of the issue:

Zip extraction from windows 11 by windows
    D

Basically I used powerarchiver context menus to zip up a folder then i used windows 11 own built in zip extractor via the context menu to extract all and this is where it throw up a fault. , I’m using windows 11 .

The file that was a problem in the zip that windows 11 could not extract was iva “babe” cotton.jpg
I know it has non standard quotes in it.

However I had winrar on the computer and tried the exact same method with their context menu compress to zip and then I extracted the file with windows own extract all context menu and it had no problems. This indicates that powerarchiver is doing something different with iva “babe” cotton.jpg compressing to zip.

Then I changed iva “babe” cotton.jpg to iva babe cotton.jpg and compressed it with powerarchiver and then tried it with windows 11 extract all and had no problems. It looks like powerarchiver is doing something to that one file that has quotes in it.

Please note that powerarchiver extracted both zip files with no problems, only windows built in zip extraction had the fault. Reason I’m letting people know in case they send zip files with special characters in files names to people who do not have powerarchiver.

When will a fix be implemented?

    Missing Icons
    LuxorL

Just tried using the Modern (Windows 10) Icon set and seeing a few missing icons in both PowerArchiver Burner and PowerArchiver Encryption screens . They are all there in the Minimalistik icon set and the only difference I can see is the former is blue and the latter grey. In version 22.00.9

PA2023 22.00.09 trying to delete a directory from a tar file.
    Brian GregoryB

I had a large .tar file (a backed up WSL) and I want to delete a few directories and their contents from it using PA2023.
PA just destroys the whole archive as soon as I try to delete a directory, leaving it in a state where PA2023 won’t even open it any more.
I tried several times and also tried compressing it to .tar.xz instead - same result.

This should either actually work, or it should say operation not supported and do nothing.

    PA 2023 Toolbox - 22.00.09 - Remove archive encryption
    PA_FanP

    Win 11 64 bit

I have some archives which have been encrypted, using the encrypt option either in pbs or when interactively creating a zip. When I open these, and look at files, I am asked for passwords, which I know, and then can view items or decrypt the files in the archive (tools>decrypt files).

However, when I use the Actions>Remove Archive Encryption (whether using the same zip or asking to write another), the routine shows progress bar to the end, but then just hangs i.e. “OK” never activates. All process information shows this stalled/hanging.

What can I do to sort this out?

Bug extracting from ZIP etc using Extract here with PA 22.00.09
    Brian GregoryB

    For example:
    Download this ZIP file: http://dslstats.me.uk/files/dslstats32W-6.5.zip
Everything in the ZIP file is in a directory “dslstats32W-6.5”.
However when I extract using right click “Extract Here” the name of the directory created is “2W-6.5” !
I am running PA 22.00.09 on Windows 11. I have seen the same happen with some other kinds of archive too.

I’m not sure when this stopped working, but I noticed that dragging a file on top of a zip archive in explorer no longer does anything- PA is supposed to open an “add to archive” dialog. However, it still works for .7z archives. I just tested further and tried this with an .lha archive (worked) and .cab archive (didn’t work). This may be related to my other issue, but in case it is not does anyone have an idea why this could happen? 64-bit Windows 7, using PA 11.71 (was also an issue with a prior 2010 version on same OS). My best guess is it has something to do with Win 7 as support for .cab and .zip are built in, and those are the two archive types that dragging doesn’t work on.

Thinking about it, I’m not sure whether it ever worked since upgrading to Win 7? Hmm.

Could this have a simple registry fix to get the copy feature back? Maybe I should wait and see if the other fix takes care of this as well when it is finished.

                Hi Qun!
There is most likely an RC5 update to PA 2011, please give it a look with that version and let us know.
Please note the “Associate for All Users” checkbox at the file association option in that version.

Sigh. Nope. This time the issue really is made clear though. When I run it as administrator everything is fine. Answering the Associate dialog “yes,” with the “All Users” box checked works fine and it doesn’t ask again next time I run it as administrator. When I run it normally though, as the logged-in user, I still get the UAC prompts. Whether I accept it or decline it (three times) PA runs and pops up the association dialog. Every time. It seems that PA won’t make the associations. If I choose “Yes,” it then activates UAC again, even if I don’t check “Associate for all users” checkbox. Why is it trying to update either all users or the admin account? If I uncheck that box, it should only associate for the local account which requires no admin approval, correct? Choosing to not show the dialog every time does not stop the UAC prompts at startup.

By the way, logging into the admin account then running PA from there will still pop up UAC, but since there I don’t require a password, it’s just a matter of clicking “yes.”

I hope this issue can be resolved soon. I am looking at that 60% off the toolbox- will this $19.98 deal expire anytime soon? I am hesitant just now since it looks like it uses PA 2011…

Oh, and the issue I wrote about in this topic remains unchanged as well.

All users association from 7zip is what made this issue appear, this is why you have it. So in order to fix it, PA needs to take it over.

                        we will take another look.

                        thanks!

p.s. toolbox deal wont expire soon.

I just wish it would at least respect when I answer “no” and choose “never ask again.” I mean, the formats are already associated with PA whatever the associate dialog says (I open PA by double-clicking an archive). I should say what I mean by respect is to never attempt to promote the opening of PA to administrator level- it does stop asking to associate though. The latest failed attempt in this drama was to reinstall 7-zip (x64 version), associate all formats with it, then unassociate them. The word “failed” says it all. Another failure was trying to have it always load as administrator, then using MS’s application compatibility toolkit to permanently allow it without entering the password. This was to be a workaround I know, not a fix, but it didn’t work.

it is not as simple as it looks… we will have another minor update to see if we made it work properly.

once you associate with all users on 7zip, you cant re-associate as standard user with pretty much any other compression utility (i tried all the big ones lik wr, wz, pk).

i think restore to the date back before 7z associated would be best option but who knows what else you installed since then.

however, we should have next version soon enough.

I had had 7-zip installed since about day one of installing Win 7, so restoring is kinda not an option… I will await the next version then. Thanks.

By the way, the version I was using was 9.20, a stable version, but it is possible I had a beta before that- I know you mentioned betas and alphas in an email to me.

By the way, is it normal behavior that when uninstalling only the admin settings are removed? Also related, whenever I reinstall PA, running as admin will require the registration info to be entered while running it as local user it is already registered from previous installation (even when I don’t register on the admin account right away).

“normal” yes… has been for as long as I have been using ConeXware Products.

Frustrating slightly… But an element to avoid bugs. ie removes all settings and registry links.

One thing i would suggest if you have not done it already would be to use the “Save settings to file…” option on the “Configuration” button once you as a user / admin are happy PowerArchiver works the way you want.

That way after a fresh start you can upload your preffered settings…

One feature I have pushed the development team for is the ability to enter your Serial and Configuration settings during the Installation Process.

So you’re saying the settings should be removed, but why are they only removed for the administrator profile, while leaving the local profile intact? Like many people, I set myself up to run as a limited user when I installed Win 7 (also when I had Vista) rather than one with full admin privileges.

hmph, problem here is that install removes what it installed.

and it installed itself under admin user.

when you later on run on any other user, installation does not know that anymore… it is not aware of any other changes to the system.

and when you uninstall, you basically uninstall for all users on the computer, however to have some kind of script that would run through every HKCU for every user and delete all PA keys seems a bit extreme.

Understood. Thanks for answering the question, and for the continued work in looking for fixes for the issue I’ve been experiencing, and of course thanks for PA itself.

it is interesting question though… should try attempt to remove any HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver that there is?

You can literally have 50 users on the computer and of course, installation is unaware of you running PA later on. PA will automatically write down settings to HKCU after it is run from new account.

Also this made me make reminder about testing if this new all user setting is actually removed during installation as well :-).

thanks for being our customer of course!

Please try this, uninstall and reinstall PowerArchiver RC5.
Do not manually delete any reg keys. Reinstall and try again.
                                                  Does that help w/UAC?

I already did that, trying to install from both my local account (which required elevation to admin of course as any installation does), and also directly from the admin account. I never manually removed registry keys as I don’t know yet what I would need to remove. I have since uninstalled it and gone back to 11.71, but I can try again.

EDIT: Just tried again. I overwrote the 11.71 installation first, then tried uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling. No good. I’m sure this has nothing to do with the situation, but I remembered I turned off Windows compressed zip support when I first installed Win 7- standard practice for me because I don’t want to see zip files show up as folders in a folder tree.

Could any of my issues have anything to do with disabling the Windows built-in zip folder support? I always do that on Windows installations because I don’t like them showing up as folders in Explorer. Then again, I expect a lot of people do this as well, and as far as I know I am the only one so far with the PA issues I’m having.

The installation of PA seems to automatically disable the inbuilt ZIP function in Win 7. I also do not like it but have never had to uninstall/disable it in either 32 or 64 bit 7. Done it is XP so many times I know the command by heart :).

it doesnt do anything to built-in zip, it disables itself once it doesnt have association to zip.

but that has nothing to do with drag and drop.
